Guy Bluford, Jr. In August of 1979, Dr. Guion S. Guy Bluford, Jr. joined NASA as an astronaut. Since that time, Bluford has worked with the Remote Manipulator System (RMS), experiments conducted on Spacelab-3, space shuttle systems, and to verify software used on flights through the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory. His expertise lies in his knowledge of technology. Bluford has also been a crewmember, serving as mission specialist, on four space journeys. This marked the first time a group of eight, the largest crew to date, traveled into space. During this mission, 76 experiments were conducted by crewmembers in Spacelab. 6

After orbiting the Earth 134 times and more than 199 hours in space, Discovery returned to Earth on May 6, 1991 landing at the Kennedy Space Center.
