5 Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION A. General View Thesis, or in Indonesian is called Skripsi, is a final paper of academic writing about one particular object of language: English Linguistics or Literature written by 8 th semester students who have completed all requirements to write. This task is written by conducting research through certain methods and rules such as library or field research by collecting primary or secondary data. The research here is an activity done by observing, processing, collecting, analyzing, and concluding an object, which is based on a theory or some and supported with systematical ways to get a scientific answer or some or to get a hypothesis in English language field development. And what we mean with primary and secondary data are: Primary data is a data found in field research and Secondary data is a data found by taking advantages from a certain reference such as books, newspapers, magazines, journals, etc. B. Purposes Thesis as its main function is a media for students to explore their abilities in a particular English field. By writing thesis, it is hoped, students are able to: 1) conduct scientific research in one field of English they like most; 2) arrange and write a scientific writing based on their interest; 3) find, analyze and solve one or some problems they face; 4) recognize their specialization in English. C. Requirements Students who are going to make their thesis are obliged to finish certain requirements as follows: 1. Having completed seven semesters with total minimum 140 credits. 2. Having Grade Point Average min without point E. 3. Having minimally point C for prominent subjects. 4. Having TOEFL score with minimum Being registered as an active student. 6. Your sub-chapters will be arranged based on their numerical list. If they have topics, these topics will be arranged with number after the number of chapter, separated and ended with full stop. 11 B.2. Arranging Numbers of Pages In arranging numbers in every page, you have to differentiate the number of page in every beginning chapter and the rest. In every beginning chapter, the number of page is put in: Center Bottom; and the numbers of page after it will be typed in: Right Top. Look at the pictures below: CHAPTER I 2 INTRODUCTION 1 B.3. How to Quote Sources? A quotation is written in the form of Direct or Indirect Quotation ; it can be a single word, a phrase, a sentence, or an entire paragraph. In selecting materials to be quoted, choose them carefully, make them as brief as possible, and use them only when necessary. When you quote something in Direct Quotation, make sure it is similar with the original work e.g. its punctuation, capitalization, or spelling. Do not forget to attach quotation marks (. ) to differentiate the original sources from your sentences. (A) Short Quotations If you quote three typed lines or fewer, put them into the body of your paragraph. Do not forget to differentiate whether they are Direct or Indirect. Here is the example: Plot is The sequence of incidents or events of which a story is composed, presented in a significant order (Arp, 1998: 41). So he tends to say plot is (B) Long Quotations Quotations more than five typed lines should be set off from the body of paragraph by indenting each line 5 spaces from left margin. Don t use quotation marks. Here is the example: Other explanations of plot I took from Timmer et al (2002: 899) who explain plot as:

12 The essential structure of a story arranged according to a coherent sequence of events. The plot is usually divided into three major parts: (1) the EXPOSITION, where the existing conflicts are established; (2) the COMPLICATION, where new conflicts introduced or old conflicts are increased in intensity until. (C) Quotation from other languages besides English This part has the same rule in writing as mentioned above direct or indirect, long or short forms. But something to be a note is if you quote words, phrases, clauses or sentences from sources written not in English, such as Indonesian, Arabic, Spain, etc. you have to translate these quotations into English. The form of translation is written in italic and 1 space. As general knowledge of literature, I may say about it from Sugondo (2005: iii) that Sastra merupakan cermin kehidupan suatu masyarakat, sastra juga menjadi symbol kemajuan peradaban suatu bangsa. (Literature is the reflection of life of particular society; it becomes a symbol of civilization progress of a nation). B.4. How to Cite Sources in Works Cited? (A) One Author: 1). List the author s name, surname first, followed by given name or initials. Period/Year. Title of book. and then Place: Publisher Zubrin, Robert J Entering Space: Creating s Spacefaring Civilization. New York: Tarcher/Purtnam. 2). Always write author s names in the fullest form, for example: Grierson, Robert A. rather than Grierson, R. A. 3). A corporate author can be an association, a committee, or any group or institution when the title page does not identify the names of the members. American Medical Association Health Professions Career and Education Directory New York: Random. 2). List a corporation as the author even when the organization is also the publisher, as in this example: Consumer Reports Best Buys for Your Home. New York: Consumer Reports. (F) Two or More Books by the Same Author: When your works cited page includes two or more works by the same author, give the name in the first entry only. For example: Freedman, J. F Above the Law. New York: Signet Bird s eye View. New York: Warner. (G) Alphabetized Encyclopedias, and Biographical Dictionaries: 1). If the author is listed, begin the entry with the author s name; otherwise, begin with the title of the article. Kiosk: Word History The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language. 4 th ed.
