3 WHY DO WE USE APA? - To ensure the accuracy of scientific knowledge - To protect the rights and welfare of research participants - To protect intellectual property rights - To ensure clear and consistent presentation of written material - To ease reader comprehension

4 WHAT IS PLAGIARISM? - Wrongful appropriation of someone else s work - Utilizing someone else s thoughts, ideas, expressions, and/or language and conveying them as your own - Considered academic dishonesty - Breach of ethics - Could possibly constitute copyright infringement

5 GENERAL APA GUIDELINES - Double space entire paper including reference section - 1 margins - Times New Roman 12 pt font - Include page header (aka: Running Head ) - Include Title Page - Headings centered and bold - Subheadings flush left and bold - References use hanging indent

9 TYPES OF CITATIONS IN- T E X T - Use the author-date method. Author s last name and year of publication following cited material. Ex, (Jones, 2013). - The use of et al. is permitted on works that have 6 or more authors - Quotations require page number - Long quotations require block quote - Each source used in-text must appear in your reference page R E F E R E N C E PA G E - References are listed alphabetically by Author s last name - Use hanging indent for each citation - Use ampersand before the name of the final author in the citation - Only the first word in the title of the article is capitalized - All major words in journal title should be capitalized - Journal title and volume number is italicized
