Name Pd. The Hobbit: AN EXPECTED EXPOSITORY ESSAY! TASK: Write a five paragraph essay addressing ONE of the following prompts. Be sure to cite evidence from the text and use correct MLA format. Place a \/ by the prompt you choose to answer. Prompt #1: Within a hero s journey, there are specific character archetypes such as a hero, mentor, trickster, etc. Choose three characters and explain which archetypal roles they fill in the story. How do you know they fit that particular role? Prompt #2: Within a hero s journey there are three main sections: The Departure, Initiation, and The Return. Choose one archetypal step of the journey from each section and explain how The Hobbit develops this component in the story.

Steps for completing your essay 1. Choose the prompt you wish to answer. 2. Refer to your book for examples that will help answer your prompt. 3. Create a thinking map to help organize your ideas. 4. Create a formal outline for your expository essay. 5. Use your formal outline to write a rough draft of your essay. Be sure to include the following: a. An introductory paragraph complete with attention grabber, background information, blueprint, and thesis statement. b. Three body paragraphs that support your thesis and contain MLA cited evidence from the book. c. A concluding paragraph. d. Well-chosen transitions between and within paragraphs. e. Correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar. f. A works cited page

6. Use the expository essay student checklist to aid in the revision and editing of your essay. 7. Follow the correct MLA final draft format to write the final draft of your essay and works cited page.

Expository essay student checklist My introductory paragraph begins with an attention grabber. My introductory paragraph contains background information, a blueprint, and a clear thesis statement. Each body paragraph has a clear topic sentence and concluding sentence. Each body paragraph contains reasons, details, or facts supported with sentences that provide examples, elaboration, explanation, expert opinion, or evidence. Each body paragraph includes evidence from the text, and I have cited that evidence correctly using MLA format. I have included a concluding paragraph that summarizes the ideas presented in my essay. My ideas are clear, original, and insightful.

My ideas are easy to follow because my organization is logical, and I have used appropriate transitions. The words I have chosen to use are clear, descriptive, and just right. I have incorporated various sentence types so my writing flows and is not choppy. I have checked my spelling, capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, and usage.

Steps for revising my draft Step 1 BOX the first word of every sentence. If there are more than two of the same words, CHANGE the way the sentence begins. Step 2 UNDERLINE all TO BE verbs (am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been). Count how many you have and change half to a better verb choice. This may mean you will have to reword an entire sentence. Step 3 BRACKET all of the TRANSITION words and phrases. Make sure they are not formulaic. Transitions should sound natural. Be sure there is a transition for ever topic sentence, quote, paraphrase, and example. Refer to your transition list in your notebook. Step 4 Circle all uses of YOU, ME, I WE, and MY. If it is not being used in the attention grabber, a personal experience example, or the call to action, IT MUST BE DELETED AND REWORDED. Step 5 HIGHLIGHT all citations introducing quoted or paraphrased evidence including the parenthetical citation at the end of a sentence. Make sure the title is directly stated in the text before it is used in a parenthetical citation.

Step 6 CROSS OUT all dead words (THING, STUFF, GOOD, BAD, FUN, etc.) and use a thesaurus to find more appropriate and specific wording. Step 7 Add ELABAORATION for each example. Step 8 Add a correct MLA HEADING to the top of your paper. Step 9 WORKS CITED is required. Step 10 Proofread and edit for all CONVENTION errors! (Capitalization, spelling, punctuation, usage, etc.) If you type your final draft, USE SPELL CHECK! *REMEMBER! Revisions don t do any good if you don t include them in your FINAL DRAFT!
