1 STILL NATIONAL OSTEOPATHIC MUSEUM 800 WEST JEFFERSON, KIRKSVILLE, MO (660) WILLIAM L. JOHNSTON COLLECTION Series : Early Work Subseries: Chapman s Reflexes NOTE: In normal archival practice, individual parts of a collection are not opened before the entire set has been processed. However, given the importance of this Chapman s reflexes material, the Museum has decided to make it available ahead of time. The listing below is therefore subject to change as the Johnston Collection continues to be processed. It is the responsibility of the researcher to follow up on such changes; the Museum will not give separate notice. [10/3/06] Accession No.: Donor: Merilyn Johnston Brooks and Gail Johnston Volume: ca. 1 inch (7 folders) Contents: Manuscripts, letters, and other material primarily relating to the work of Charles Owens, DO, with Chapman s reflexes and technic, as conveyed by Owens s assistant, Mrs. A.D. Ketcham. Additional topics include sciatica, lymphatics, abdominal pathology, endocrines, polio, and other. Much of the material consists of carbon copies received by Dr. Grace R. McMains (ASO 1904), whose connection with WLJ such that he ended up with her set of copies has not been established. Although the material dates from the early 1940s and thus has been placed in the series documenting WLJ s early work, it is possible that WLJ actually acquired the items at a later date. Dates: ca Processing and Finding Aid: Cheryl Gracey (consultant and former curator) Processing Dates: Processing Notes: 2006 Sep (1) The carbon copies require particularly careful handling to avoid smudging or eradication of the typing. In addition, the typing paper used, though more durable than onion skin, is potentially vulnerable to tearing. Photocopying of originals may be warranted if this series is subject to heavy use. (2) Slight but persistent musty smell. Access and Handling: Unrestricted access. Dr. Johnston maintained his working papers in a variety of ways, including traditional folders, hanging files, manila envelopes, binders, loose piles, rubber bands, and in one case, a chain of twist ties. Within these, he organized information by clipping batches of material together, clipping those batches to other batches, and so on, often with post it notes or small slips of paper attached to identify the group. This organization has been maintained by folding pieces of acid free paper around each
2 batch, one within another to correspond to the sequential groupngs. Researchers and photocopiers must be careful not to disturb the arrangement of the groups and subgroups. In addition, great care should be used in removing folders from boxes to keep the small slips of paper from falling out; researchers must also keep the folders flat on the table when working. Copyright and Permission to Publish: Requests for permission to publish material from the collection should be directed to the Curator. The Museum does not claim to hold the copyright for all material in the collection; it is the responsibility of the researcher to identify and satisfy the holders of other copyrights.
