1 OSU Libraries Robert Lundeen Library Faculty Development Award APPLICATION Date of Application 04/26/11 Title of Proposal: ereader Ownership Makes Better 21 st Century Library Faculty Expected Length of Activity: 1 year Total Funds Requested: $5000 ($4700 for ereaders + shipping and handling) Primary Applicant Name: Laurie Bridges Academic Rank and Working Title: Assistant Professor and Librarian Telephone and Address: Laurie.Bridges@oregonstate.edu; Name: Uta Hussong-Christian Academic Rank and Working Title: Assistant Professor and Librarian Name: Evviva Weinraub Academic Rank and Working Title: Head of ETS Name: Jane Nichols Academic Rank and Working Title: Associate Professor and Collection Development Librarian Summary & Rationale (2-3 paragraphs) Explain how this addresses the purpose of the Lundeen Award (pursuit of scholarship or 1
2 professional capacity building activities) Libraries are rapidly changing and ereaders are quickly becoming ubiquitous. Patrons are beginning to ask questions relating to their own ereaders ( How can I read articles on my erreader? and How do I borrow books for my ereader? ). Yet, most OSU library faculty do not own a dedicated ereader device and have minimal experience using them; answering questions or engaging in discussions related to ereader use is presenting challenges not easily overcome with limited or no experience using these devices Describe what you are going to do. Every library faculty member will be asked if they would like to participate in the study; the investigators will also be participating in the study. All participants will be given an ereader (Kindle, Sony, or Nook). Each participant will be interviewed at the time of distribution about their thoughts on ereaders, what they hope to be able to do with their ereaders and what they think their usage will look like. Each participant will also be interviewed 1-month into using their ereader, and again at 6-months and 1-year. We will ask the participants to keep a monthly log of the kinds of materials they downloaded and accessed through their ereaders. This data will be kept in a locked area on the wiki. Goals & Expected outcomes How the completion of the activity will contribute to the OSU Libraries At the conclusion of the study every participant will have personal (and extensive) experience using an ereader, exploring their capabilities, their limitations, and their usefulness. By building in-house expertise with a variety of ereader devices, OSU Libraries will be able to offer better service and support for ereader users on campus. Our expertise will allow us to discuss with and teach faculty and students how an ereader can be used to access ebooks and other electronic content which will allow us to respond more accurately to questions regarding integrating these devices into their research and coursework. Our expertise will also put us in a better position to participate in and lead discussions on campus about ebook adoption in the classroom and collaborate on issues related to accessibility.how the completion of the activity will contribute to your professional development The amount of qualitative data collected (23+ librarians library faculty X 4 interviews each) will be considerable and allow for numerous publications and presentations about library faculty use of ereaders and how it does or does not influence their understanding, use, and experiences with ereaders; how owning an ereader results in providing robust patron service and support (ereader Guide, teaching and reference service, etc.); acquiring content; discoverability of ebook and other digital content; how and where patrons integrate the library in their ereader workflow. Methodology & Timeline for completion Outline the steps/phases of the activity. Phase 1: 32 library faculty are ed confidentiality information and asked if they would like to participate in the study (see Appendix A). NOTE: We anticipate that not all eligible participants will choose to participate (for example, those who own an ipad or an ereader.) If the number of participants exceeds 23, we will randomly select 23 (in addition to the 4 primary investigators) to participate in the study. Phase 2: Participants will be randomly assigned one of the three most popular ereaders currently on the market: Kindle Wi-fi, Nook Wi-fi, or Sony Touch; ereaders are ordered. Phase 3: Interviews are conducted with each librarian (each researcher will conduct 1/4 of the interviews). At the conclusion of the interview the participant is given the ereader. Phase 4: Interviews are conducted approximately one month after ereaders have been distributed. 2
3 Phase 5: Interviews are conducted approximately 6 months after ereaders have been distributed. Phase 6: Interviews are conducted approximately one year after ereaders have been distributed Describe the roles, responsibilities and time commitment of each person involved Laurie acts as the primary contact for the study and will be responsible for coordination of activities (ordering ereaders, planning, IRB, etc). Laurie, Evviva, Uta, and Jane will share in the responsibilities of creating interview questions and conducting interviews. We will share in analyzing the results and publishing/presenting. Time commitments are considerable and will begin summer of 2011and include preparing an IRB proposal, coordination, interviewing, writing, and presenting. Dissemination plan Include details about potential venues and audiences within OSU Libraries and/or in the field Publishing an article in a peer-reviewed journal, such as CRL, Portal, or ITAL. Writing an article for a popular magazine, such as Computers in Libraries. Giving presentations at Library conferences such as ALA Annual, Special Libraries Association, ACRL, LITA or OLA. Presenting to the OSU University community about ereaders via OSU Libraries Faculty Seminar Series and/or OSU Libraries Administration Briefings, through a Center for Teaching and Learning presentation, and sharing findings with Disability Access Services. Does the proposal require any of the following Release time yes X no o If yes, include signature(s) of person(s) authorized to approve release time o If yes, expected hours and covered duties Use of Human Subjects X yes no o If yes, attach appropriate university form to the application. The process of obtaining IRB approval or a determination of exemption from subject protection regulations does not have to be completed prior to submitting your grant proposal.
