2 Literature Circles There are a multitude of ways to conduct Literature Circles in your classroom. I ve tried using different strategies and methods to figure out the best way to get the most student achievement. The following are steps I take in my classroom to ensure the most fun, interactive, and engaging use of Literature Circles. Before beginning Literature Circles with my class, I use each Literature Circle job as a mini lesson to start off reading groups. The week before Literature Circles begin, we learn the different jobs in Literature Circles as a whole group: Monday Mini lesson on Literary Luminary using the book we re going to use for Literature Circles. I use the sheet as a guided practice portion, and I also assign a section and another Literature Circle sheet for Independent Practice during reading groups. Tuesday Mini lesson on Word Wizard Wednesday Mini Lesson on Stellar Summarizer Thursday Mini lesson on Adventuring Friday Mini lesson on Discussion Director
3 Literature Circles After our week of practicing Literature Circle jobs, I assign students to groups of five (since there are five jobs). I explain the following to my students... Jobs alternate every day we practice in Literature Circles The assigned reading needs to be done for homework and so does the job assignment Each person needs to be prepared the following day in order to participate in his or her group Each person must follow the specified instructions on his or her sheet The Discussion Director is also in charge of the cover page. Make sure you do your part! I like to alternate between using Literature Circles and reading groups in our class. This format is up to you and your class dynamics. Please me (talesfromaverybusyteacher@yahoo.com) if you have any questions. I hope this packet is of use to you! You are able to make copies for educational purposes. If you wish to use parts of this packet, please make sure you specify that you received it from my blog or my TpT store. Thank you for your download! Here s to great teaching! Marine Freibrun
