Size: 1.5 linear feet Biographical information: Samuella Shain: Samuella Rose Shain was born in New York City in 1929 and died in 2003 at the age of 74. In 1950 she married the artist Stephen Morgan Etnier and spent the next 33 years living with him in Harpswell, Maine. Samuella, better known as Brownie, was a freelance writer and a photographer. She graduated from Smith College in 1950 and received a master's degree in Library Science in Samuella Rose Shain had numerous articles published in local, regional, and national publications. She engaged her talent on behalf of a variety of philanthropic, educational, and environmental associations. She was an active volunteer in many local organizations including the West Harpswell Elementary School library, Curtis Memorial Library, the Maine Historical Society, and the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. She was also on the board of Directors of School Administrative District (SAD) #75, Director of the Brunswick Drug Abuse Center, founder and president of Research Associates, specializing in information retrieval and organization, founder and chairman of the Casco Bay Area Literacy Volunteers, a Trustee of the Maine Historical Society for several years, as well as a Vice Chair and Treasurer of the Sagadahoc Democratic Committee. Charles E. Shain: Charles Shain was born in Tamaqua, PA., in 1915 and died in 2003 at the age of 88. He graduated from Princeton University in 1936 and was the former president of Connecticut College from 1962 to 1974, before retiring to Maine in He taught

2 English and American Studies at Princeton University, Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., and Milton Academy, Mass. Charles Shain was Director of and Trustee of Day Publishing Company and has served as member and chairman of the Georgetown School committee. He published many scholarly articles and chapters in books. He held an A.B., PhD. and an L.L.D. from Princeton University where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, Scribner Fellow, and Mathey Fellow. He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a Fullbright Research Scholar. Following his retirement from Connecticut College, Charles Shain spent two years at Northeastern University in Boston working with the Cooperative Education Program. He was a life long researcher and President Emeritus of Connecticut College. Charles and Samuella Shain: Together Samuella Shain and her second husband, Charles E. Shain, completed and edited two anthologies: The Maine Reader published by Houghton Mifflin and Growing up in Maine by Down East Books both in It was not the original plan for the two anthologies to come out within two months of each other. The Maine Reader was the first book; scheduled to come out in 1989 did not make it until 1991 because of publishing delays. They also co-authored the unpublished work, Maps of Maine: The Men and Times that Made Them. Charles and Samuella Shain s combined backgrounds Charles in American Literature and Samuella in Library Science enabled them to be the ideal editorial duo to compile these fascinating anthologies. The Growing up in Maine anthology offers a good contribution to the social history of Maine by introducing the reader to an interesting collection of 22 autobiographies of young Mainers growing up over the past 150 years.(1) It reveals childhood reminiscences from all social classes and regions of Maine. We are immediately absorbed by stories from farm children, sailors, aristocrats, hardworking, self-sufficient, God-fearing families, and a Passamaquoddy Indian. Shain ( ) and Samuella Rose Shain ( ) research papers collection comprises 1.5 linear feet which mostly covers the period and consists of the authors research papers written prior to the publication of their book Growing Up In Maine which was eventually published by Down East Books in The bulk of the collection consists of a variety of materials that document the Charles E. Shain and Samuella Rose Shain s writings, drafts, and research papers about the twentytwo author entries that make up their anthology. These materials include correspondence relating to copyright permissions for author entries not in the public

3 domain, correspondence relating to Down East Books, author contract, newspaper clippings, illustrations, photographs, rejection letters, a manuscript of final draft, five floppy disks (with the final manuscript on it?), and research papers about the twenty two author entries included in their book, Growing Up In Maine, which are arranged alphabetically by authors last name. One of the 22 authors, Hudson Maxim ( ), had no information in the collection, so his name is not included in the author entries. The Growing Up In Maine research papers collection offers tremendous variety of experiences of childhood recollections in the state of Maine, mostly from the 19 th century. Series listing: I. 4 Inventory: Box 1 Series 1 Correspondence, Folder 1: Correspondence Copyright Permissions, Folder 2: Correspondence Down East Books, Folder 3: Correspondence General, Folder 4: Authors Contract, 1990 This series consists of a large number of letters written between 1990 and 1991 by Charles and Samuella Shain to obtain copyright permissions for author entries included in their book Growing Up in Maine which are not in the public domain. This series also includes the authors contract dated August 8, 1990, and 29 separate letters written by Down East Books, the publisher of Growing Up in Maine, and 4 general correspondence letters, 2 of which were written by Charles and Samuella Shain to Geraldine Chasse, founder of The Madawaska Historical Society and the other 2 letters were responses from The Madawaska Historical Society to the Shain s letters. Series 2 Clippings (Newspapers and Magazines), Folder 5: Down East magazines, Folder 6: Newspaper clippings, 1992 This series contains 10 Newspaper clippings arranged chronologically and five Down East Magazine issues from September 1991 to Spring Both the newspaper clippings and magazine issues include reviews of Charles and Samuella Shain s book Growing Up in Maine. Series 3 Photographs and illustrations Folder 7: Photographs Folder 8: Illustrations A Folder 9: Illustrations B This series consists of fifteen 8/10, twelve 5/7 photographs, and one 5/7 Maine map. Copies of these photographs were used as illustrations in Growing Up in Maine. This series also contains a large number of print copies of illustrations not included in the book or replaced by others. 5 Folder 10: Author entries not included ( Rejects ) This series contains print copies of book chapters related to a number of Maine authors autobiographies such as Benjamin Webster, Barbara Wentworth, Gerald Averill, Fleetwood Pride, Esther E. Wood, Elizabeth A. Nash, Ethan Allen Chase, and Lincoln Colcord, which were initially selected to be included in Charles and Samuella Shain s book Growing Up in Maine, but eventually rejected, as the notes on them indicate, by the publisher or replaced by other Maine authors. 6 Series 6 Miscellaneous Folder 1: Miscellaneous This series includes four copies of handwritten journals by students of the Brunswick High School classes of 1881, 1884, and These journals are entitled My School House by Lubee, The first Sounds of the Morning (no author), My School Troubles by Annie Allen, and one journal is without a title and dated April 29 th, The series also contains copies of the designers sample page layouts and font samples for the book Growing Up in Maine Series 7 Manuscript Folder 2: Manuscript and five floppy disks This series contains one corrected proof-read manuscript of the final draft of Growing Up in Maine, five floppy disks documenting the final draft, and two copies of annotated bibliography/contents of the 22 author entries comprising the anthology, few of them heavily corrected in pencil.
