2 STEPS TO GET GOING IN REFWORKS Pt 2 USING WRITE AND CITE: - Download Write-n-Cite book marklet in MSWord - Creating Place holders in your text - Creating a Bibliography WORKING OFFLINE

3 Under Education Databases, click on RefWorks:

4 Click on Login:

5 Click on: Continue to this website (not recommended)

6 REMEMBER WHEN WORKING FROM HOME, ONE NEEDS TO LOGIN FIRST WITH UP S GROUP LOGIN! Please contact your information specialist for the login code

7 ENTER YOUR REGISTERED LOG-IN NAME AND PASSWORD

8 DOWNLOAD THE WRITE-N-CITE BOOK MARKLET: From Tools, download the browser book marklet Write-N- Cite, that allows you to insert a citation placeholder in your paper. This is a once-off action to be done on your own computer

9 DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE WINDOWS VERSION OF WRITE-N-CITE BY FOLLOWING THE PROMPTS:

10 NB!!NB!! While installing Write-N-Cite, ensure that you tick the box: Allow Working Offline on the 3 rd page of the installation process

11 WRITE-N-CITE will now be installed in your MS Word: Book marklet in MS WORD 2003:

12 Book marklet in MS WORD 2007: Click on the Add-Ins tab to find the Write-n-Cite button

13 HOW TO CREATE CITATION PLACEHOLDERS IN YOUR PAPER NB! IN MS WORD, click on the Write-n-Cite button, and log-in, using your RefWorks log-in & password via the group login:

14 MAKE SURE YOUR CURRENT WORD DOCUMENT IS LOADED IN REFWORKS CHECK THE TOP OF YOUR REFWORKS PAGE. IF NOT, CLICK ON LOAD IT

15 Keep Write-n-Cite open while writing in MS Word. Search for the reference to be cited in your text in Write-n-Cite: Select your folder, or, if no folders were created, all references should be in the Last Imported Folder, or References Not in A Folder.

16 Click on the Cite link next to the reference you want to refer to in your paper

17 Write-n-Cite will now insert a citation placeholder in the paper for the reference selected (it will be formatted later in your chosen reference style).

18 CREATE A BIBLIOGRAPHY: In Write-n-Cite, click on Bibliography:

19 Select your Output Style from the dropdown menu, and click Create Bibliography: (usually either APA 6 th ed. or Harvard British Standard)

20 Write-n-Cite will first change the name of your paper by adding Final in front of your file name (the original paper without the bibliography will still be kept in your files under the original name):

21 Then Write-n-Cite will create a bibliography of all the citation placeholders in your paper, and both the citations in the text and bibliography will be formatted according to the style of your choice (here APA):

22 TO MODIFY IN-TEXT CITATIONS (optional) Click on Cite next to the citation, and then on Edit citation:

23 1. First choose your Target Output Style from the dropdown menu 2. Modify your citation 3. Save to Word Modifications will immediately be displayed in the Preview

24 The citation placeholder(s) will also display the modification(s)

25 EXAMPLE OF A MODIFIED IN-TEXT CITATION AND ITS BIBLIOGRAPHY:

26 WORKING OFFLINE Every time when working offline, click on Tools, and choose from the drop-down menu Create/Update Offline Database

27 Click on Create

28 Click Yes

29 When the database has been downloaded, tick the Work Offline box. The screen will turn over automatically

30 The offline list of references will now be displayed. It looks exactly like the online version

31 To create citation place-holders in your work, follow the same steps as if online

32 MAKE SURE YOUR CURRENT WORD DOCUMENT IS LOADED IN REFWORKS CHECK THE TOP OF YOUR REFWORKS PAGE. IF NOT, CLICK ON LOAD IT
