2 We re excited to share that the Library now can provide our patrons access to Mango Languages! Mango Languages is a fun-infused way to learn a new language. It prepares learners for realistic conversations and strengthens every day communication skills in over 70 world languages, including English, French, Spanish, and Pirate. How to start: 1. Go to 2. Click Mango Languages 3. Click the sign up button 4. Choose the language and in the top right corner fill in your profile 5. Wait for a confirmation to be sent to your inbox. Make sure to check your junk mail just in case. 6. Once you have confirmed your , click on your first lesson for the language you have chosen. 7. Congratulations! You re ready to sail the seas of learning with Mango Languages! Before you know it, you can join the library staff as we practice our Be s, Ye s, and scallywagging!** **Please note: library staff do not actually endorse scallywagging.

3 From the desk of. Here at Penticton Public Library, there s never a dull moment behind the scenes. We are always planning programs, cataloguing books, upgrading our technology, playing Tetris with available storage space All of this is how we strive towards creating a better experience for our patrons. Part of improving the patron experience requires upgrading and adding new technology. In April and May, two of our software services are changing: printing and the online catalogue. We now have a new printing system called Papercut. Instructions have been posted at our public computers for how to use it. Dan Lerch, MSIS Systems Librarian (and Serge the Cat!) On May 7, we ll be launching our new catalogue, Enterprise. Enterprise is a lot more user-friendly, and will vastly improve how you search for materials on our shelves! Some of the features for Enterprise are: improved ways of searching patron-created lists of materials (books, DVDs, mysteries, to-be-read) lists of NY Times bestsellers right on the catalogue staff-created lists of new arrivals, recommended reads, & more! Dirty Book Sales Looking for more ways to support your local library? We have book sales several times a year! We sell: books, audiobooks, magazines, DVDs, & CDs! Already have too many books? We accept used book donations. Most of the books that do not make it onto our shelves are sold during the book sales. These funds are used to buy new items to keep our collection current. Our indoor book sale is on again with tons of new items! Thank you for all your donations and purchases from this year s book sales! So far we ve made: $ !

Infant to 15 months Fridays, May 4 to June 1 1:30-2:30 pm Children s Library TODDLERTIME This program is designed for toddlers and features an active mix of puppets, songs, rhymes, feltboard stories, and of course, books! 15 months to 3 years Fridays, May 4 - June 1 10:00-10:30 am Children s Library PRESCHOOL STORYTIME This program features puppets, songs, rhymes, feltboard stories, and longer stories with more challenging content. Participation encouraged. 3-5 years Wednesdays, May 1 to 30 10:00-10:30 am Children s Library

5 FAMILY GAMES NIGHT It s time for our Spring Family Games Night! Bring your whole family for an evening of board games, coding games, life-sized checkers, chess, life-sized snakes and ladders, Lego & more! All ages Thursday, May 24th 6:00-8:00 pm Library Reading Room Children s Library Penticton Museum LEGO CLUB PLUS! We re excited to announce that, with funding from the Kootenay Library Federation, we were able to purchase Qubits for our Lego Club! Qubits are construction blocks that snap together to create structures. They teach design and engineering basics, and also allow a younger crowd to practice colour sorting and shape recognition. Ages 5 plus** Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30 pm May 2, 16 No Lego Club in June Summer dates TBA Children s Library **Children 7 and under must have an adult accompanying them. **Children 8 and over must know a parent/guardian phone number. 6 Ages 8-12, Register online for coding club programs at pentictonlibrary.ca ROLLING WITH ROBOTS (TAKE 2) In case you missed our first run of this program, we re rolling back around again for Take 2! Join us to learn about coding the Sphero SPRK+ robotic balls with drawing and block-style coding methods and compete against other teams to code your robot through a maze first! Please note: this program requires working in pairs. Friday, May 4 3:30-5:00 pm Registration opens: April 25 CHOOSE YOUR OWN CODEVENTURE It s our last coding club meeting of the year, and we re ending with a bang! We ll have a little bit of everything during this session, from Spheros to MakeyMakeys to life-sized coding and more! Register for a station-based rotating series of activities. 7 These programs are all free and drop-in Open to ages TEEN GAME SHOW NIGHT From Silent Library to Wheel of (Mis) Fortune to knowledge of obscure trivia to many others, try your hand at an evening of game-show style challenges that test wits, will and more! Please note: let us know if you have any food allergies! Saturday, May 12 7:00-9:30 pm The YAC is a group of awesome teen volunteers who meet once a month to plan teen events, give feedback about teen services, and help the library order new things for our collection! Teens can receive credit for volunteer hours at their schools. If you re interested in volunteering, talk to Lara at the library or drop in at our meetings! 10 Download the app at: If you re familiar with using ebooks and downloadable audio books, you probably know the Overdrive app. Did you know there s a new app by overdrive, and her name is Libby? Libby might seem a bit more superficially hip, but the app offers more customization than the Overdrive one can. The biggest difference is that you can tag what you read. Tags are little notes ( TBR, 2018, didn t finish, sci-fi & more) that you can create and add to books you have or haven t read/listened to yet in the app. It allows you go keep track of the good, the meh, and the awful. Tags let you be as organized as you want! To access tags: click SHELF then Tags is the third option at the top of your screen. To create a new tag, hit Tag from inside any book and then Add. BORROW A LIBRARIAN Got a new tablet and want to learn how to get the most out of it for FREE? We can help! This is a one-hour, one-on-one appointment with trained library staff who can help with tablets, laptops, e-readers, and more! We offer free book and audiobook deliveries to homebound patrons who live in Penticton. BOOK CLUB SETS We have book club sets you can check out if you are unable to make it to the clubs we host! Each set has 6 copies of a book as well as a booklet of discussion questions. Drop by the information desk and let us know what book, audiobook, or DVD you re looking for. We can try to borrow it from another library in BC. Please note: Inter-library loan borrowing times and overdue fines are different. You can have up to 3 inter-library loans at one time. YOUNG ADULT CHILDREN
