1 MODERN WORLD HISTORY CORE ASSESSMENT #1: Case Study of Imperialized Country Essential Questions for Project How have technology and exchange transformed societies and the human experience? How did imperialism mutually affect the colonizer and the colonized world? Background In the 19 th Century, many industrialized countries took over the non-industrialized parts of the world. The resulting conquest changed the course of global history. Assignment Overview You will be assigned two countries: 1. an imperial power that imperialized a less dominate power, 2. a country taken over by that power during the Age of Imperialism. You will create a case study of this relationship and document the information in an Interactive PowerPoint Presentation/Primary Source Product. The following areas should be researched: Motives for Imperialism o What prompted the European power to take over the less dominate power? (Examples: What resources did the power want? Were there geopolitical (include map), economic, social, and political reasons?) Methods of Imperialism o In what ways did the imperial power take over and maintain control of the imperialized nation? (Did they use violence? Was it a more peaceful takeover? Did the lesser power resist? Make sure to provide specific evidence (events, dates, major players, etc.) Impact on Imperialized Nation o What were the geopolitical, economic, social, and political results of imperialism in this country? Final Products Interactive Power Point (or other comparable option at teacher discretion) o Using Microsoft PowerPoint and the attached instruction sheet, you will create an interactive Power Point that reflects your understanding of the research areas. Primary Source Product o From the information gathered in your research, you will create one of the following products to illustrate the perspective of a person/group of people from the imperialized nation illustrating their experiences while being colonized (positive or negative): Newspaper editorial, Diary entry, Political cartoon Source Documentation You will be required to complete a bibliography in proper format that includes AT LEAST FIVE SOURCES. You should use the available databases as your first avenue of research.

If you choose an example that is not included on this list, you MUST obtain prior teacher approval France Algeria French West Africa French Indochina Madagascar Great Britain Egypt/Sudan Nigeria South Africa Burma Hong Kong India Afghanistan Portugal Angola Mozambique Germany German Southwest Africa German East Africa Cameroons Belgium Belgian Congo The Netherlands Dutch East Indies Spain Phillipines Cuba Japan Korea
3 Interactive Power Points using Power Point 2007 The instructions below detail how to use the features of Power Point to create an interactive poster. Interactive PowerPoint Requirements: PowerPoint Instructions: o Must have at least 10 slides in addition to 1 main page that contains links to other slides under the three research areas (see sample PowerPoint on course site) and 1 bibliographic slide at least 12 slides total. o Informational slides include: o Motives for Imperialism Why did the European power want to imperialize the country? To acquire natural resources/raw materials? If so, which? Would the country be a beneficial trading region for the European power? If so, how? Is it on the water? Does it link continents, etc.? o Methods of Imperialism How did the European power maintain control of the imperialized territory? Did the European power use force/fight wars? Did the European power negotiate treaties? o Impact on Imperialized Country How did imperialism affect BOTH countries? o Words to know: o Economic o Political o Social o Geopolitical o The bibliography slide MUST be in proper MLA format, it should NOT list the resources used. You may use to aid you in constructing your bibliography. o Important: The information in your PowerPoint should be bulleted into concise points. Do NOT include wordy slides. During your presentation you should have the ability to elaborate on each one of your bullet points. o You are not required to have a video but it is not discouraged. If you find a reasonable length video that highlights/expands upon your research area, you can embed it into your PowerPoint Primary Source Product The instructions below detail the expectations for the reflection piece of CORE Assessment #1 From the information gathered in your research, you will create one of the following products to illustrate the perspective of a person/group of people from the imperialized nation illustrating their experiences while being colonized (positive or negative). You can choose ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: o Newspaper editorial, o Diary entry, o Political cartoon Newspaper Editorial/Diary Entry Requirements: o Must take the perspective of EITHER the country that imperialized or the country that was imperialized
4 o o Must highlight the aspects of imperialism that you researched: Motives for imperialism Methods of imperialism Impact on the imperialized nations Must be 1 page in length, 12-point Times New Roman Font. The set-up for the paper should include the following: Political Cartoon Requirements: o What is a political cartoon? Political Cartoons are art forms portraying government policies, programs and personalities in humorous ways. Political cartoons often portray satire and parody to criticize various governmental programs o Must take the perspective of EITHER the country that imperialized or the country that was imperialized o Must highlight ONE aspect of imperialism that you researched. Either: Motives for imperialism Methods of imperialism Impact on the imperialized nation o Must be in color and at least 8 by 11 o Contain a one paragraph, typed description (4-6 sentences describing your cartoon) Checklist of what you are turning in/should have on. Printed copy of all 12 PowerPoint slides (can print as handouts/can print in black & white). Must include bibliography slide. Flash drive/disk/cd with saved copy of PowerPoint to present to class. Printed copy of primary source product. Printed copy of rubric.
5 Click on the Insert tab at the top of the screen. In the Illustrations category, choose the type of illustration you wish to insert. You can also use Microsoft Excel to create a chart, and then copy/paste it into PowerPoint. Any images retrieved from the internet can be inserted using the Picture function. You will need to locate where you saved the pictures. With the Clip art function, you can locate clip art from Microsoft Office online. With the Smart art function, you can insert a variety of graphics to illustrate lists, processes, relationships etc. To insert shaped text boxes and word clouds Click on the Insert tab at the top of the screen. In the Illustrations category, choose the Shapes function. You can add text to any shape. o Select a shape and add it to your Power Point presentation. o Right click on the shape and select Edit Text. o You can change the font, size, and color of the text (and text box). To insert word art or standard text boxes Click on the Insert tab at the top of the screen. In the Text category, select the type of text you wish to insert (Word Art or Text Boxes). Actions and Hyperlinks o You can add these types of links to TEXT or IMAGES. o Action: use this to link to files or other Power Point slides. o Hyperlink: use this to link to web URLs. Highlight the TEXT you wish to link or SELECT an illustration. o Click on the Insert tab at the top of the screen. o In the Link category, select Hyperlink or Action to add a hyperlink or action to the selected text/illustration.
6 Click on the Insert tab at the top of the screen. In the Media Clips category, select the type of media you wish to insert. Choose Movie to insert a VIDEO OR ANIMATED CLIP ART. o Select movie from file locate and insert the file. Choose Sound to insert music or podcasts. o Select sound from file locate and insert the file. Other Suggestions/Ideas: Click on the Design tab to change the slide orientation, theme, color scheme, or font. You can locate additional themes by clicking on the office button at the top, left-hand corner of the screen. Select NEW TEMPLATES. On the Microsoft Online Menu, choose Design Slides or Content Slides to see a variety of themes by category. You can also type in a keyword in the search bar to find specific themes. Click on the Animations tab to control the order in which text/images appear on the slide, to add transitions between slides, and to add sound when slides transition. You can change the preferences so the slides transition after x-seconds instead of when you click the mouse. To create animated text, visit or Google animated text and select a website. To convert/download videos from You Tube or other internet sources, use When converting videos, choose the wmv format. When converting sound files, choose mp3 as the format. Any video from You Tube can be converted into a sound file by selecting mp3 when converting with Zamzar. Once the video is converted and ed to you, you have 24 hours to download it.
