6 ntroduced in 1905 with Rip Van Winkle, Rackham s illustrated gift books were issued in two primary formats: the deluxe edition, typically a signed limited edition bound in vellum, printed on handmade paper, with the colour plates mounted, or tipped-in, on thick paper, with captioned tissue guards. These were published at the same time as the normal trade editions of the book, case-bound in cloth, with the plates printed on ordinary plate paper. Occasionally the publisher issued improved versions of the trade editions with special leather bindings. It was George Harrap who hit on the idea of a Rackham special, the most exclusive format of Rackham s books. From The Vicar of Wakefield on, Harrap held back the first dozen or so copies from the deluxe edition, had them bound in fine morocco (goatskin) by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, decorated in gilt with tools designed by Rackham, and asked Rackham to add a unique original watercolour sketch to the limitation page. This collection includes every title treated by Rackham in this fashion. Rackham had been long-established as a commercial book illustrator before he came to dominate the Edwardian deluxe gift book market. This catalogue is arranged in two sections; the first contains works wholly by Rackham issued in deluxe limited editions; the second contains a wide selection of his commercial work in books, magazines, and periodicals, together with some posthumous catalogues and related ephemera. This was the first book wholly illustrated by Rackham to be issued in a limited edition format and it immediately established him as the leading illustrator of lavishly produced gift books in the Edwardian era. In March 1905 Rackham s originals were exhibited at the Leicester Galleries, which led to this deluxe edition being fully subscribed before the exhibition had closed. After the enormous success of the play Peter Pan, which opened on 27 December 1904 and broke all previous theatrical records, Barrie sanctioned this publication, in collaboration with Rackham as illustrator. The text was extracted, with minor revisions, from Barrie s book-within-a-book in his London story-collection for adults, The Little White Bird (1902), and it was published specifically as a children s gift book. The translator was born Alice Erichsen, the daughter of Hermann Erichsen, a Danish businessman who had settled first in Newcastle upon Tyne, then in Upper Tooting, where Alice met her husband, Edgar Lucas ( ). She also made successful translations from the Danish of Hans Christian Andersen and Henrik Pontoppidan. Her sister was the artist and illustrator Nelly Erichsen ( ). The box a little worn in places, but a fine copy, a remarkable survival of this luxurious presentation. deluxe extra-limited edition, number 13 of 100 copies signed for the publisher and printer on the limitation page and each plate signed on the mount by the artist, bound in full vellum. According to Latimore & Haskell, although Rackham was supposed to sign all 100 copies, the artist confessed that he had signed only about 20 of them. Copies numbered 101 to 600 were issued in a half vellum portfolio with green cloth sides; none of these was signed by Rackham. The Peter Pan Portfolio reproduces 12 of Rackham s favourite illustrations at their original size. Barrie wrote enthusiastically of Rackham s originals, which he had seen exhibited at the Leicester Galleries, I like best of all the Serpentine with the fairies, and the Peter in his night-gown sitting in the tree. Next I would [sic] the flying Peters, the fairies going to the ball (as in the tiff and the fairy on cobweb) the fairies sewing the leaves with their sense of fun (the gayest thing this) and your treatment of snow (Ray 329). The calligraphic title is printed in grey within a decorative frame printed in pale green, and Limited is not added to the publishers name in the imprint. The running headlines are in an attractive large italic face, with both upper and lower case letters, and each chapter has a head- and tailpiece by Rackham. The publishing firm of Hodder and Stoughton were incorporated as a limited company in December 1919, so copies such as this with Limited in the imprint must date after that. The title page is printed all in black (it was printed in two colours in the 1912 edition), but the book retains the reset 1912 text with the italic running headlines. It has a plain top edge and plain endpapers and is printed on good quality paper stock, with fore and lower edges untrimmed. In this issue, the map of Kensington Gardens is printed upright, on the recto of a single leaf with blank verso, whereas in the deluxe edition it is printed perpendicular on the verso of the contents leaf. Riall notes there are two different green cloths used for the binding of the trade edition, either smooth or textured. The cloth on this copy is an emerald-green linen-grain cloth, presumably Riall s textured variant. This is the first of what would have been no more than a very few special copies in a luxury binding commissioned by the publisher; this copy handsomely bound for the publisher George C. Harrap, with his initial H stamped in gilt on the front cover, and with an original pen-and-ink sketch with red highlights by Rackham on the limitation leaf, depicting a lady with a fan, signed Arthur Rackham, 23 Oct 29. Describing his artistic method for these specials, Rackham pointed out that my little sketches must inevitably be of a light hearted or joking nature... They have to be spontaneous and free handed. The nature of the paper is such that there can be no preparatory drawing and no alterations. Riall comments that From The King of the Golden River (1932), Harrap issued nine or ten copies, seven being for sale, of a special issue of the first limitation numbers of the limited edition (A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham, 1994, p. xvi). However, the present example shows that the practice had its origins earlier than 1932: indeed, this copy may represent the earliest example of the format. An excellent copy. deluxe edition, number 1 of 757 copies signed by the artist; this is one of 14 special copies in a luxury binding commissioned by the publisher containing an original signed pen-andink and watercolour sketch by Rackham. This sketch is captioned Handle him as if you loved him (Walton s dictum for handling a live frog before impaling it on a hook) and shows a riparian scene with a frog pleading with a gentleman, while a typically Rackhamesque anthropomorphic tree looks on. Harrap threw a presentation party, for the publication of The Compleat Angler, on 24th September There were fourteen guests, including the publishers, the printers and Rackham. Each guest was presented with a publishers leather bound edition, and these books had a signed sketch by Rackham on the half-title page (Riall, A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham, 1994, p. xiii). Laid in is a two-page autograph letter from Rackham on his Stilegate letterhead to the bibliographer and antiquarian bookseller John Carter, dated 25 January 1936: I m afraid that I don t know where you ll find To the Other Side. Since [Eric] Osborne [of booksellers Dawsons of Pall Mall] discovered two in my possession & sold them for me, I have discovered one belonging to my brother & have just sold it for him. But no-one seems to know of the existence of any others. Osborne went to the publishers (Phillips the map people) & they couldn t even find out that they had ever published such a book if publication it can be called. The author, also, told Osborne he had no copy & knew of none. I expect that very few copies escaped the wastepaper basket... Also laid in is a subsequent letter of 20 February the same year on the stationery of Charles Scribner s Sons, for whom Carter worked as European Agent, from Helen Clampitt to a Mrs Barnum explaining that Carter had been trying to obtain another copy of the book and had written to Rackham: This is his reply, and I thought it might be good fun for you to stick it in the book. Published by the map and guide-book publishers George Philip & Son, To the Other Side was conceived as a promotional device to encourage the English public to experiment with transatlantic travel at the time of the Chicago Exhibition.
