Even bullies who taunt other students often excuse their behavior by saying they were just teasing. So what is the difference between teasing and taunting? Teasing is: Taunting is: As you can see, teasing and taunting are extremely different. No one should excuse taunting as just teasing. pushing/hitting chasing spreading rumors withdrawing friendship name calling making threats between friends lighthearted and playful not intended to upset one-sided sinister and not playful intended to upset B4 School Mate gossiping excluding others stopped if feelings are hurt meant for all to laugh reciprocated continued if feelings are hurt meant for the bully to laugh destroying property stealing taunting or nasty jokes insults or racial slurs Which type of bullying do you think is most common? Which is the most hurtful? Explain your answers. Do other types of bullying exist? What are they? Does your group of friends like to tease one another? Has your teasing ever been mistaken for bullying by a teacher or other adult? WHAT IS BULLYING? Do these statements from students describe instances of bullying? Madison: She never invites me to her parties. Josh: I heard him call another student a name in the hallway. Kelly: Why does she always ignore me? What have I done to her? Unsure? That s okay. Each of these statements may or may not be considered bullying it depends on the situation. For example, if Madison is the only person not invited to the parties, she is likely being excluded on purpose. This is a form of bullying. However, if she is not the only uninvited person, there is a chance Madison and the other girl are simply not close friends. How can the other two statements be considered instances of bullying? How might they not be considered instances of bullying? HOW PREVALENT IS BULLYING? Bullying is not always reported, so it s difficult to know how often it occurs. Researchers have estimated that between 15 30% of students are involved, either as victims, bullies, or bystanders. Reasons someone might not report bullying: ashamed of being a target afraid of retaliation from the bully worried that adults cannot stop it Copyright 2011 School Mate B1 Bullying is not always immediately identifiable. Being able to define it helps. Bullying is repeated psychological or physical harassment and attacks on other people. Do you think bullying is a serious problem or a normal part of growing up? Is bullying common in your school? Where do you see bullying take place? WHERE DOES BULLYING HAPPEN? Bullying can occur in many places. Bathrooms, locker rooms, hallways, courtyards, and buses are the most common locations because teachers have a more difficult time witnessing bullying. Bullying online, known as cyberbullying, has become more common. Chat rooms, social networking sites, instant messagers, texting, and are often used by bullies. IN2 MS WHAT IS CYBERBULLYING? A type of bullying that is quickly becoming more and more common is cyberbullying. Using interactive technology, such as , instant messaging, texting, social networking sites, Internet games, or password and ID theft, bullies can easily attack others anonymously and repeatedly. With their identities hidden, bullies feel they have free reign to post messages or images that hurt a specific individual or group of people. Examples of cyberbullying: sending or forwarding malicious messages or pictures posting embarrassing pictures of targets tricking others by pretending to be someone else spreading personal information, lies, or rumors starting mean-spirited groups on social networking sites STOP CYBERBULLYING Cyberbullying is extremely hurtful, especially because bullies are harder to identify. Even though it is becoming more common and may seem impossible to overcome, it can be stopped and prevented. Ways to stop and prevent cyberbullying: report the problem to a parent and/or law enforcement official save and print any correspondence refuse to participate in attacks and encourage others to do the same ignore s or messages from strangers or known bullies block communication with the bully never share personal information or passwords B6 School Mate Have you ever encountered a cyberbully? How did you handle the situation? If you haven t encountered a cyberbully, how do you think you would handle the situation? Have you taken any precautions to avoid cyberbullying? If so, what? Besides being harder to identify, why do you think so many more bullies are using technology? TELLING VS. TATTLING When you witness bullying, what is your first instinct? In most cases, telling an adult about the bullying is the best solution, but many students have trouble with this. Why? They don t want to tattle; however, telling and tattling are two very different things. Telling: gets someone OUT of trouble is a responsible decision usually solves problems Tattling: gets someone IN trouble is for personal gain usually causes problems If you are a victim or bystander in a bullying situation, telling an adult is never considered tattling. Your observations are important as teachers or other adults may not be able to see bullying as easily. Be responsible and report to an adult whenever you see someone in trouble. BE A LEADER One of the best ways for your school to stop bullying is to have an effective policy on bullying. To find out if your school has a policy, talk to a teacher, counselor, or principal. Ask about the current policy and give your feedback as a student, you are more likely to know whether the policy actually works or not. If your school does not have a bullying policy, or the current one does not work well, think about what you can do to help. Gather a group of friends to brainstorm and present your ideas to the counselor or principal. Let teachers know that you have concerns about the policy and want to make a difference. Once you have presented your ideas, don t stop! Stay involved and let teachers know how the policy is working. Hold a review session after the new policy has been in place for a few months. Consider what has been working and what has not been working. You may need to make some tweaks and adjustments, but don t let this discourage you. Nothing can prevent bullying 100%, but you can still give 100% to help make a difference. B8 School Mate Why does telling an adult have such a negative stigma, even when it is to help someone else? Do you know if your school has a policy on bullying? What does it say? With a group, discuss whether the policy works or not. If you school does not have one, discuss if it needs one. HL8 School Mate Say NO to Tobacco, Alcohol, & Drugs Drugs are substances that affect the way your body works. Many drugs are illegal and cause major damage. DRUGS TOBACCO ALCOHOL Just Say Have you ever been pressured to try tobacco, alcohol, or drugs? Even if you re curious, say NO it s worth it to stay safe, healthy, and alive! Use these tips to make saying NO easier. Know your reasons for saying NO. Do you play sports? Has a family member had a bad experience with drugs? These are not excuses; they are real reasons for saying no. If someone does not like your choice, he or she is not a good friend. Think of the people that you will disappoint. Explain how much trouble you would be in by parents, teachers, and others to take away some of the pressure. > 1 3 Smoking and chewing are hard habits to break. Why? Tobacco contains nicotine, a very addictive substance. Once people use it for a few weeks, they want it again and again. Just like smoking, people often start drinking to look cool. However, did you know alcohol is a drug? Drugs don t solve problems. They cause problems. They waste time and money and cause problems with family and friends. You won t become popular, and you ll only gain bad attention. Drugs mess you up. They fry your brain, make you act stupid, and steal your happiness. With drugs, you always lose. Drugs affect your future. Using drugs takes away your chances for success. Don t take the road that leads to nowhere. Tobacco causes health problems. Smoking causes many cancers. In fact, almost all lung cancer is caused by smoking. It also makes you more likely to get sick and be unhealthy. Tobacco makes you less cool. Some kids think smoking is cool, but smoke is stinky. Plus, it stains your teeth. Gross! Tobacco steals from you. It not only takes away your health, but also your money and even friends. Tobacco hurts others. Second-hand smoke (inhaled by nonsmokers) causes many of the same problems that smokers have. > > > > > > > Alcohol slows you down. It slows your nervous system, which affects your speech, emotions, sight, motor skills, and ability to use good judgment and make safe choices. Alcohol is risky. It increases your risk of death (by car accident in most cases), weight gain, and other health problems. It also makes you more likely to use other drugs. Alcohol affects your future. Heavy drinkers usually finish fewer years of education. Alcohol affects your school work. Without school, you re on the fast track to nowhere. > > > Think of the things you ll be able to do if you say NO. You ll have more energy, avoid unsafe situations, and be happier! 2 By attending Mass, we become a community of believers gathered for God, learning the teachings of Christ and partaking in Holy Communion. Mass is unique for each of us because we also come to communicate with and give ourselves to God in our own ways. It s important to attend Mass with an attitude of joy, love, praise, and reverence for God. It is at Mass that we gather to be spiritually fed by Christ. ORDER OF MASS Introductory Rites Entrance Song, Greeting, Penitential Rite, Gloria, Opening Prayer Mass begins with the Introductory Rites, which form us into a community and prepare us to receive God s word and the Eucharist. We begin by making the Sign of the Cross to remind ourselves of Jesus sacrifice and victory. Christ s presence is acknowledged, and we are given the chance to ask for and receive mercy for our sins. After asking for mercy, we recite the Gloria in order to praise God with Jesus, and we are given a moment for silent prayer. Pauses in Mass, such as this moment, are provided for us so we can communicate with God and feel His presence in our own hearts. Liturgy of the Word First Reading, Responsorial Psalm, Second Reading, Alleluia or Gospel Acclamation, Gospel, Homily, Profession of Faith (Creed), General Intercessions (Prayer of the Faithful) The next part of Mass is the Liturgy of the Word. During this time, we listen to the Word of God through three different readings. The first reading is taken from the books of the Old Testament (except during the Easter season), and it usually relates to the gospel reading. After the first reading, we sing or recite a psalm as a prayer to God. The second reading comes from one of the letters (usually Paul s) of the New Testament. Before the gospel is read, we sing or recite the Alleluia verse to remind us of Jesus presence and prepare us to hear His word. The priest then gives the homily to emphasize what we heard in the Scriptures, and we stand to proclaim our faith in God through the Creed. Our petitions are presented to God, and we ask Him to hear our prayers this brings a close to the Liturgy of the Word and prepares us to receive the Eucharist. Liturgy of the Eucharist Preparation and Offering of the Gifts, Prayer Over the Gifts, Eucharistic Prayer, Memorial Acclamation, Lord s Prayer, Sign of Peace, Communion Rite The Liturgy of the Eucharist begins when the gifts of bread and wine are brought forth to the altar and prepared. With prayers, we praise God and offer Him the gifts so they may be transformed into the body and blood of Christ. The Last Supper is recalled, and we hear the words Jesus spoke to the disciples. The Eucharistic Prayer reminds us that Jesus gave Himself as a sacrifice to forgive our sins and offer us eternal life. We are then asked to proclaim the mystery of faith during the Memorial Acclamation. The Lord s Prayer and the Sign of Peace are the final preparations for the Communion Rite, when we are invited to go forward and share in the body and blood of Christ. By participating in Holy Communion, we become united with Jesus and all the people of the Church. Afterwards, the priest prays for the Eucharist to feed and benefit us spiritually. Concluding Rites Blessing, Dismissal Mass comes to a close with a final blessing from the priest. He dismisses us by saying, Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Our response, Thanks be to God, should be said in a true spirit of gratitude as we leave we can be joyful for the chance to have celebrated and worshipped God with the community of the Church. Mass CF2 School Mate THE OLD TESTAMENT The Old Testament is about the covenant between God and our Jewish ancestors in the faith. The Catholic Old Testament contains 46 books. Pentateuch Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy Also known as the Torah (Law), these books describe the creation and tell of the Israelites journey to become the people of God. Historical Books Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Tobit, Judith, Esther, 1 & 2 Maccabees In these books, God s guiding hand and comfort is demonstrated, as well as the suffering that results from turning away from Him. Wisdom Books Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Wisdom, Sirach The Wisdom Books use poetry, songs, and proverbs to provide guidance and instructions on how to live a life pleasing to God. Prophetic Books Major Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel Minor Prophets: Lamentations, Baruch, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi The Prophetic Books were written by God through the prophets. Repentance, the coming Messiah, and prophesies are major themes. The Church is more than just a building it is a community of people, united by Christ s love and the task of maintaining and spreading the Good News on Earth. Christ s love takes human form through our love for one another. How did the Church begin? Jesus gathered followers throughout His life on earth. Twelve of these followers became His apostles, with whom Jesus shared His teachings in preparation for the Church. The Last Supper was the final step to prepare the apostles, and it revealed how they were to carry out Christ s mission. The founding of the Church was completed with the descent of the Holy Spirit; therefore, the birthday of the Church is Pentecost. THE NEW TESTAMENT The 27 books of the New Testament are the result of the effort to preserve the teachings of Jesus. Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, John The Gospels were written by four of Jesus apostles as a testimony of His life, teachings, and resurrection. Acts of the Apostles Acts serves as a connection between the Gospels and the Letters. It is an account of how the early Church developed and grew. Letters Romans, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 & 2 Thessalonians, 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1 & 2 Peter, 1, 2 & 3 John, Jude Written by Saint Paul, his followers, and other apostles, these letters to Christians continue the teachings of Jesus. Revelation Written by John, this final book of the New Testament is a message of hope and a promise of Christ s return and victory. God communicates with His people through the Bible. With inspiration from God, many different people wrote the various books in the Bible. It is divided into two parts the Old and New Testament. Scripture holy Copyright 2011 School Mate CF1 IN3 MS In the Catholic Church, we celebrate seven sacraments, or saving actions of Christ. Each sacrament is a sign of Jesus love for us. Participating in the sacraments brings us closer to God and helps us confirm and renew our faith in Him. Sacraments 7 BAPTISM (Matt. 28:19) The sacrament of baptism is important because it washes away our original sin and our personal sins. With baptism, we are reborn and enter into the community of the Church. Baptism can never be lost the bond it creates with God is unbreakable. CONFIRMATION (Acts 8:14 17) Our bond with God and the Church, first formed at baptism, is strengthened through the sacrament of confirmation. The sacrament of confirmation is our chance to reaffirm our faith and commitment to God. Through this sacrament, the gifts we receive from the Holy Spirit are increased so we can be living examples of the love and teachings of Christ. EUCHARIST (Matt. 26:26 28) The sacrament of the Eucharist (Holy Communion) allows us to receive the body and blood of Christ and be fed spiritually. Holy Communion reminds us of the Last Supper and Jesus sacrifice. Through this meal, Christ shares Himself with us. Each time we partake, we become one body with Christ, symbolizing the total oneness we will someday share with Him. RECONCILIATION (John 20:22 23) The sacrament of reconciliation helps us experience God s mercy and love in the face of sin. No matter how hard we try, we will all sin. God knows our sin, yet His love for us is unconditional. The sacrament of reconciliation lets us examine our sins and confess them with true repentance, so that we can be forgiven, mend our relationship with God, and partake in His grace. ANOINTING OF THE SICK (James 5:14 15) The sacrament of the anointing of the sick is received when a person is ill or dying. Through the anointing, we receive the blessings of the Holy Spirit and feel God s grace. This sacrament provides peace and spiritual strength to those who suffer. While anointing may prepare us for death, it can also restore spiritual, mental, and physical health. HOLY ORDERS (2 Tim. 1:6 9) The sacrament of holy orders is the process by which men can become ordained as bishops, priests, and deacons of the Church. During this sacrament, the ordained bishops and priests are given the power to act in Christ s name by providing the sacraments to the people of the Church (especially the Eucharist) and spreading the Word of Christ. Deacons can also spread the Good News and minister to the people, although they cannot lead Mass. MARRIAGE (Matt.19:5 6) The sacrament of marriage involves more than just a couple Christ plays a key role. Holy Matrimony unites a couple with the love of Christ, so that they may be a living example of faith and God s love. Marriage is a sacred covenant in which a couple shares a commitment to each other and God, and to raise their children in the teaching of Christ. CF4 School Mate Jesus said, This is my commandment: love one another as I love you (John 15:12). This commandment is the basis of Catholic Social Teaching. As people of the Church, we have the responsibility to preserve the dignity of life of all people and care for the world God so graciously created for us. Social justice also encompasses protecting the sanctity of life, helping the poor and powerless, treating all people as equals, and living as an example to all the people we meet. There are seven principles of Catholic Social Teaching: SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY Admonish the sinner. Instruct the ignorant. Counsel the doubtful. Comfort the sorrowful. Bear wrongs patiently. Forgive all injuries. Pray for the living and the dead. Life and Dignity of the Human Person Every person deserves respect because they were made in the image of God. God loves us all, so we should love one another. Human life is sacred. Institutions should enhance, not threaten, the lives and dignity of all people. Rights and Responsibilities of the Human Person As human beings, we have some basic rights, such as the right to life, shelter, education, clothing, food, etc., as well as the right to raise families and choose our religion. With rights comes responsibility. We need to be responsible to our families, communities, and world. Those with more should help those with less. Call to Family, Community, and Participation Every person is connected through family and community. It is our responsibility to make the world a better place to live. Family is the central institution; therefore, it should be supported and not undermined. The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers God blessed us all with various skills; therefore, work is a way to serve God by using those skills. We have the right to productive and decent work, fair wages, safe working conditions, and rest from work. Option for the Poor and Vulnerable Just as Jesus taught, we should help people who are in need. Serving them is a way to serve the Lord. Jesus instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. Solidarity of the Human Family No matter what our race, ethnicity, economic status, etc., we are all part of one human family. Jesus tells us to love our neighbors. We should promote peace and justice, end racism, and help others. Care for God s Creation Our faith requires us to care for the Earth and be good stewards. God created the world for us, so we show him respect by taking care of it. This also includes protecting and caring for our fellow humans and living creatures.
