Tables were set up throughout the meeting room, occupied by members who were dealing or trading and members who were buying or trading. Rodney Stent presented an interesting Frame of the Month on Pakistan.. JUNE CLUB MEETING WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 2018 AT 7:30 P.M. BIG CLUB AUCTION The program at the June meeting is a 75 lot club auction. See inside for a listing of the lots and scans of many of the lots. There should be some lots, stamps or supplies, that are on your list. DEATH OF JIM CRUM REPORTED. Salem Stamp Society member, Dr. James D. Crum, died May 5, at the age of 87. He was unable to attend many club meetings because of poor health. Jim had been a stamp collector since his teens. Jim was the founder of the Enophilatelica (wine on stamps) study unit of the American Topical Society. He then published its journal for 10 years until he had a stroke. He also maintained a wine on stamps checklist. Without Jim, there probably would not be a wine on stamps unit in the ATA. It would please Jim to have members raise a glass of wine to toast a life welllived. WORLD BEAT FESTIVAL JUNE30, JULY 1 Salem Stamp Society will again have a booth at the Salem World Beat Festival where we give out free stamps to youth and sign up new Salem Stamp Society members. It takes volunteers to keep the booth open and start youth on the road to stamp collecting. Please look at your schedule and see when you can volunteer some time to help out at our booth. The festival is entertaining, with some activities going on all the time. There is food from other nations of the world to sample and enjoy, also. Salem Stamp Society P.O. 2 FROM THE PRESIDENT The 2018 PIPEX was held at the Red Lion Hotel at Jantzen Beach on Mother s Day weekend, with the help of many members of Salem Stamp Society. No fewer than nine members served on the PIPEX Organizing Committee in eight capacities: Bob Reynolds served as Treasurer; George Struble headed Exhibits; Larry Spray and Alan Maul co-chaired the Bourse; Lucien Klein and Phil Kumler co-chaired Promotion and Publicity; Phil carried double duty in Youth Activities; Lisa Janz chaired Registration ; Steve Dulaney was the Volunteer Coordinator; Ray Berg was the Awards chair. Thanks SSS members for helping to make it such a successful show! The Salem Stamp Society had a table at PIPEX, where we were able to talk to a lot of people about our Society. Interest in joining us was expressed by several and hopefully we will have some new members to announce soon. Summer is rapidly approaching, but the Society continues its activities. We will of course meet all summer and will again host a table at the World Beat Festival the end of June and the first of July. We will need additional volunteers to be at the tables during the event, so be sure to volunteer by calling our Vice President, Karen Nurmi, so she can schedule you for a shift. Bob Reynolds was successful in picking up a couple of stamp collections recently, with the help of Secretary and resident dealer, Gary Tiffin. Bob thinks that these collections and our current inventory will be enough stamps to last us for the entire year. Be sure to come to our monthly meetings, where bid boards, auctions, raffles and door prizes will be offered to all our members. See you there! Tom Crosby FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT Lots of Salem Stamp Society members attended PIPEX and had a wonderful time. Our members did a fantastic job helping to organize and participate in the event. The exhibits were lined up double sides and filled the back of the room, with security guards protecting the Inverted Jenny stamp. There were lots of wonderful dealers and I obtained many stamps. We had received the Edwin R. Payne Memorial Plaque for postal history research. It was donated to the club by long time (and now deceased) Salem Stamp Society member, Al Winget. It had been hidden in a closet since The last person to receive the award was a member of Salem Stamp Society. It has now gone to a new home with the Northwest Federation of Stamp Clubs. (Editor s note: Ed Payne was a pioneer collector of Oregon postal history who encouraged other people to become interested in collecting postal history.) I will be having a potluck/board meeting in July at my home and all will be welcome if they want to see how a board meeting operates----and maybe you will try out next year to be on the board. Directions to my home will be published later. The last club meeting was a good turnout for the swap meet and all had a good time. There were lots of winners on the raffle and door prizes. Karen Nurmi GEORGE STRUBLE RECEIVES GOLD AWARDS AT INTERNATIONAL SHOW IN SWITZERLAND Switzerland s NABA national stamp exhibition takes place only every six years. It was held this year in Lugano, on May It is a top class exhibition that had around 200 exhibitors competing for awards. It also aims to appeal to young philatelists and has a special corner where youth can present their exhibits alongside adults to a wider audience. It is referred to as a springboard for international competitions. George Struble entered two exhibits: Development of Swiss Airmail up to 1939" and SCADTA mail from and to Switzerland.
