1 EDITORIAL AND REFERENCING STANDARDS The Oriente Moderno (OM) journal issues publishes papers in Latin alphabetwritten in Italian, English, French, Spanish and German languages. The lenght of such contributions (to be provided with an approximately 100 words English language Abstract and with 5 English keywords, meant for filing the material itself) might range from about 7,500 to 10,000 words. Citations retrieved from languages not based on Latin alphabet are to be transliterated in according to the most scientifically accredited transliteration systems. As for Arabic language, this journal takes the system stated in these editorial standards (please, see further). While editing the papers and drafting their bibliographical references, authors must closely follow the guidelines given in the 690 standard, issued by ISO in Geneva and released on Italian territory by UNI (Milan). USE OF THE SO CALLED HARVARD REFERENCING SYSTEM (AUTHOR NAME-DATE) IS LIKEWISE PERMITTED. 1. Bibliographical references (ISO 690 Content, form and structure) AUTHORS NAMES Roman type. As follows: Surname first, followed by a comma, and then the name (or the initials) followed by a full stop. Please, make use of upper-case and lower-case letters (e.g. Jefferson, Matthew). In the closing bibliography, surname of the author alone must be written in CAPITAL LETTERS. 1

2 When up to three different authors surnames are present in the bibliography, a semicolon is requested after each surname in order to tell them apart (e.g. Tom, White; Dick, Red; Harry, Black.). When dealing with more than 3 authors, the surname of the first one only must be written, followed by et alii (in italics.). Should there be no authors name on the title page (be it a collection, anthology, compilation), the name of the Editor can be mentioned SINGLE PUBLICATIONS Publication title comes after surname and name of the author and must be written in italics, followed by a full stop [any translation available must be included in square brackets] Place of publication is followed by a comma and by the name of the publishing house, likewise by the year of publication. All these must be in Roman type. The number of edition (where not being the first one) must be expressed in Roman type in full or in superscript (3 points) as to the date (e.g. London, Earl Grey, ) As to the place of publication, it is advisable to use the version of the toponym in case of availabilty of the exonym (e.g. Cairo, Algiers, Mosul, Damascus) The reference page or pages are to be written with a mere p., even though they are in the plural (e.g. Crone, Patricia. Slaves on Horses. Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1980, p ). Same standard must be kept for n. (No., number/s), l. (line/s), vol. volume/s, and such ISBN standard classification code, if existant, must be reported in the bibliography. 2

3 1.3. ESSAYS IN WORKS BY MORE AUTHORS The title of the essay must be written in Roman type and follows the author s or authors name in double quotations marks ( ). Finally insert a full stop The name of the Editor (if any), written in Roman type, name / surname, and the publication by more authors separated with semicolon ( ; ) if more than one will all go after by In:. UNPUBLISHED PAPERS AND TEXT Author and contribution title must be written in Roman Type Place of composition and / or preservation and / or owner of the paper (if different from the author) followed by a comma Year of production must be stated followed by any other information (if deemed useful). 4 1.5. PAPERS IN PERIODICAL PUBLICATIONS After stating the Author, the title of the paper must be written down in Roman Type, in double quotations marks ( ), followed by a full stop. Italicized name of the periodical will follow (make use of an acronym if a periodical is commonly known by means of it). At the end insert a full stop again Volume, number of instalment (if necessary, write down New Series) and year of publication (in brackets) must be be written in Roman Type As to mark number of page/s, please refer to point (e.g. Blachère, Régis. Régards sur l «acculturation» des Arabo-musulmans jusque vers 40/661. Arabica, III/1 (1956), p In the bibliography, ISSN standard classification code must be written, if specified ENCYCLOPEDIAS ENTRIES Reference to a particular entry of an encyclopedia will be stated as s.v. (sub voce / sub verbo) in italics, followed by the entry itself in Roman Type and in French quotation marks (), followed by the entry compiler s name in round brackets and by the italicized title of the encyclopedia. Reference to volume and pages is unnecessary. As to The Encyclopædia of Islam (or Encyclopédie de l Islam), quotable through its very abbreviation, with no points and in italics, (El ), second and third edition will be flagged by their Arabic numerals and in superscript to 3 points. It s by far preferable to write the author s surname only, followed by a full stop, and the first significant work s words. If necessary, the work is to be identified by a progressive letter (a, b, c) in case of the very same title. 6
