2 CONGRATULATONS! You have just taken the first step toward learning more about a remarkable resource - the library. We on the Emmanuel College Library staff welcome you to the library. We will be glad to answer any questions you might have in the course of the walking tour. f AS YOU WALK N THE FRONT DOOR AND UP THE STARS, DRECTL YN FRONT OF YOU S THE CRCULATON DESK. A T THS DESK YOU MA Y: - Check out books with your Emmanuel 1.0. Books are loaned for three weeks and may be renewed for two additional three week periods, unless another borrower has requested them. Students from Simmons, Boston State, Mass. College of Art, Wheelock, Suffolk, Wentworth, Emerson and Hebrew College are welcome to borrow books from Emmanuel. - Sign out reserve materials for use in the library. Reserve materials may be signed out at the Circulation Desk for two. hour periods for use in the library. The Circulation Librarian will be happy to answer any questions concerning circulation and reserve materials. - Get change for a dollar for the Xerox machine. - Sharpen your pencil. A sharpener is located on the right side of the desk. TO THE LEFT OF THE ClRCULA non DESK S LOCATED: - Xerox Machine. Copies are.10 each. - The Library Director's Office. Sr. Maura Meade, S. N. D. is the present director of the Emmanuel College Library. Sr. Maura is interested in your questions and suggestions concerning the library, and invites you to share them with her. This department, staffed by a cataloguer and cataloguing assistant, is responsible for the cataloguing and processing of books and other materials. ~

N THE MAN FOYER YOU WLL ALSO FND: - Recent Book Purchases and Books of Topical nterest, e.g. women's issues, preventive medicine ~ i OPEN THE DOUBLE SET GLASS DOORS TO THE LEFT OF THE MAN FOYER AND WALK THROUGH TO THE READ NG ROOM. TO THE RGHT OF THE GLASS DOORS ARE LOCATED: - Card Catalog. The catalog is the primary means for gaining access to information in the library. The EC catalog is divided into two sections: Author-Title and Subject. The Author Title section is closest to the glass doors. The Subject section is nearest the windows. - Reference Desk. All students and faculty are encouraged to make use of the reference services which EC provides. The job of the reference librarian is to get you and the information you need, together. The following are examples of questions which were answered at the reference desk: 1) need the address of the Bureau of ndian Affairs, and information on ndian agencies. 2) Where can find information on financial aid for women doctoral students? 3) Where can find information on the author of Cyrano de Bergerac? 4) need information on phonetics and learning centers. 5) Where can find information on the Arts and Crafts Movement in 19th c. PLEASE OPEN. - The Pamplet File is a collection of non-book materials on a wide variety of topics from Africa to Yoga. A complete list of the subjects in the me is kept on top of the cabinet. TABLE CONTANS: - Books in Print editiorr available upon request from the Acquistions Librarian. - Library Pathfinders - Pathfinders are single sheet guides to library resources on specific topics in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science and Technology. They are intended to save you time and effort in gathering materials for theses or term papers. All titles are listed in the Subject Catalog. - Bicentennial American ssues Forum is a collection of pertinent historical readings on American history. TABLE / CONTANS: o - Social ssues Resources Series - Each SRS binder concentrates on a different social issue and contains the major periodical articles written on that topic, reprinted in their entirety. Some issues covered are: Pollution, Work, Drugs, and Mental Health. NOW MAKE AN ABOUT FACE A WA Y FROM THE WNDOWS AND YOU WLL BE FACNG THE REFERENCE COLLEC TON. The Reference Collection comprises the first 13 stacks and consists of books which are consulted (more frequently than others) for certain kinds of information. Books that are located in the reference collection have an " R" over the call number on the catalog card. for example: R 031 K47 - Encyclopedias are located in the aisle directly across from the reference desk. PROCEE) UP THE STARS TO THE MEZZANNE AND TURN TO YOUR RGHT. - Mezzanine - this level contains the rest of the circulating collection ( ). WALK DOWN THE MEZZANNE TOWARD THE FRONT EXT AND LOOK TO YOUR RGHT. - Several Special sections have been set aside for your convenience. - Mystery Stories - This is a special collection for mystery buffs. These books are not listed in the card catalog. - Fiction - These bqoks carry a "F" over the call number on the catalog card. For example: TTLE CALL NO. Meyer, Nicholas. The Seven Per Cent F Solution M613ss - Fiction: Foreign - Books written in foreign languages are color coded to indicate in which language the book is written. WALK THROUGH THE EXT DOOR AND TURN MMEDA TEL Y TO YOUR LEFT. - Art Gallery - The gallery is a collection of gifts from the friends of Emmanuel College. Library users are invited to visit the gallery. A staff member will be happy to accompany you. - The left wall of the mezzanine foyer contains a list of donors who made the construction and furnishing of the library possible.
6 J, - The Ladies Room is on the left and the Men's Room is opposite. - The Emmanuel Room houses materials related to the history of the college. Rare books, manuscripts, and books with fine bindings are also housed in the Emmanuel Room. Library users are invited to visit this room also, when accompanied by a staff member. - The Seminar Room - This room serves as the office of the Acquisitions Librarian. The acquisitions librarian welcomes suggestions for purchase of books which faculty and students would like to add to the EC collection. t is impossible to fill every request, but each will be given serious consideration. YOUR TOUR OF THE MAN FLOOR AND MEZZANNE S NOW COMPLETE. WALK DOWN THE STARCASE LEADNG FROM THE MEZZANNE FOYER TO THE MAN FOYER. TURN RGHT AND PROCEED DOWN STARS TO THE LOWER LEVEL. TO YOUR MMEDATE LEFT ARE LO CATED: - Three telephones. There are two pay phones and one intercampus house phones available. - Elevator. OPPOSTE THE STARS S LOCATED: - The Vincent de Paul Gallery/Smoker. This room was named for Sr. Vincent de Paul Curran, S.N.D. a long time member of the Art Department and its former chairperson. When this room is not used for art exhibitions, smoking is permitted. This room may be used for that occasional game of chess, a nap, or by students who wish to work in groups.. TO THE RGHT OF THE SMOKER ARE LOCA TED: - Bubbler (water Fountain) - Ladies Room - Alcove with Faculty Room and M~n's Room
7 TO THE LEFT OF THE SMOKER DOWN THE MAN CORR DOR ON THE RGHT SDE S LDCA TED: - Listening Room - This room houses the music card catalog and EC's collection of 1260 records and tapes. A main listen-. ing room, six sound proof booths, three record players comprise this area. The hours are subject to change, so please check for them and the regulations which are posted on the door. NEXT TO THE LSTENNG ROOM S LOCA TED: - Typing Roqm - This room may be used by anyone wishing to type or study. Unfortunately, we cannot supply typewriters; if you wish to type you may bring your own. LEFT SDE OF MAN CORRDOR: - President's Conference Room - This room is not open to the public. t is used only by the President and those she invites to use it for special meetings and functions. L, A T THE END OF THE MAN CORRDOR, WALK THROUGH THE DOUBLE DOORS TO THE PERODCAL ROOM. ON YOUR RGHT S THE PERODCAL LBRARAN'S OFFCE. - The Periodicals Librarian is responsible for the more than 500 periodicals and microflm that Ee currently receives. She has charge of the Listening Room and will be happy to help you in either room, in any way she can. - On the librarian's desk, you will find the Emmanuel Simmons list of periodicals and the Wheelock list. WALK N FRONT OF THE DESK AND TURN RGHT. - Deadline Data on World Affairs - This grey fle is a weekly information service which reports facts, statistics, and important events for every country and major international organization. - Current Non-Science Periodicals - These are arranged alphabetically around this area of the periodical room. - Current Newspapers - Papers are hung on racks in the center of this section. - Microfilm Readers and Cabinet - Microflm copies of the New York Times, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, and various others are housed in this area.

ON THS SHELF S LOCA TED: - The Union List of Serials (Periodicals) - The Listing of The Boston Public Library's Periodicals. - Subject Guide to EC's Periodicals. Located next to the Union List, this me gives a user access to all periodicals in Ee focusing on a specific subject. - Visible File. This me stands at the end of the shelf, and is an alphabetical listing of all periodicals Ee currently receives and has received in the past. : AFTER LOOKNG A T THE VSBLE FLE, rurn LEFT. - Abstract and ndex Tables. Signs accompany these three tables to indicate which materials are located on each. ON THE LEFT SDE OF THE ROOM ARE LOCATED THE PER,ODCAL STACKS. - The stacks are divided into three sections: 1) All non-science periodicals arranged alphabetically. 2) Newspapers and government publications. 3) All science periodicals arranged alphabetically.
