1 Reading Project In order to prepare for seventh grade, you are required to read at least one book from the District 54 Summer Reading List. The list contains both fiction and non-fiction books at different Lexile levels. You are also required to complete a Reading Log and Written Response. (Both the Reading Log and Written Response should be completed based on the same book). 1. Choose at least one book to read during the summer. 2. Once you have read the book, complete the attached Reading Log. 3. Select two Written Responses from the list to complete. Your Written Responses may either be typed or neatly handwritten. Please don t read these books: Please avoid reading the following books as they are part of our 7th and 8th Grade Guided Reading Curriculum: -The Hunger Games Series -Maniac Magee -Fahrenheit 451 -The Lord of the Flies -To Kill a Mockingbird -My Side of the Mountain -The Outsiders -Hatchet -The Giver -The Book Thief -Night -The Devil s Arithmetic -The Boy in the Striped Pajamas -Anything But Typical -Mango Shaped Space - Ender s Game -Frankenstein -Divergent Series -Twilight Series -Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series When you begin school in August, you will share and turn in the Reading Log and Written Responses to your language arts teacher. This will be your first grade in your language arts class! Remember, this project is the first impression your language arts teacher will have of you. Give this project your best effort. Make sure it is something you are proud to share. Your project is due on Friday, August 24 th for all incoming 7 th graders. If your project is NOT turned in on time, it will be considered late and thus may result in reduced points. A rubric is provided on the back of your project for you to see how your work will be assessed. Name: Grade Level:
2 Directions: After reading a book over the summer, complete the reading log below. Book Title: Author: Evaluate the book by giving it a rating based on a 4-star scale (4 stars is the highest rating you can give). Justify your rating by explaining why you would or would not recommend the book to others (5-7 sentences).
3 Directions: After reading a book over the summer, complete two of the written response options below. Circle the options you choose. Your project may either be typed or neatly handwritten in the space provided below. 1. Write a continuation of the story. Describe what you think might happen to the characters after the story has ended. What obstacles do these characters face and what will they do to overcome them? Your response should be two complete 5-7 sentence paragraphs. Make sure your answer only includes information based on what happens after the story ends. (Do not retell the story.) Be sure to use what you have learned about the setting and characters as you tell what happens next. Everything should be logical based on the events in the story. 2. Choose a scene from the story and rewrite it from a different character s point of view. Include the chapter and page number you are choosing to re-write. Explain the events from your chosen character s perspective and be sure to maintain a clear tone (voice) throughout that fits with the events of the story. Make sure to include all major events, but include information that is not included in the book. Do not include direct quotes from the book. Your response should be a minimum of two complete 5-7 sentence paragraphs. 3. Summarize the book. Use the following criteria: -Somebody (Describe the main character in 2-3 complete sentences.) -Wanted (Describe the character s goal/motivation in 2-3 complete sentences.) -But (What is the conflict or problem in 2-3 complete sentences.) -So (Describe how the character tried to solve the conflict in 2-3 complete sentences.) -Then (How does the character resolve the conflict in 2-3 complete sentences.) 4. Consider how the main character reacted to incidents that occurred in the story, and then write an essay in which you analyze how the character s thoughts and actions reveal aspects of his or her personality. Include evidence from the passage to support your analysis and understanding. Your response should be a minimum of two complete 5-7 sentence paragraphs. 5. Create an alternate setting for the story. In the first paragraph, describe the original setting in 2-3 sentences and then describe the new setting in 2-3 sentences. In the second paragraph, choose an important event in the story and rewrite it based on the alternate setting. Each paragraph should be a minimum of 5-7 complete sentences.
