1 Reading Fair GUIDELINES PACKET OSUE Elementary All OSUE students will be assigned a reading project to complete in the 2 nd Quarter. This project can be either: Mississippi Reading Fair entry or Reading/Book Report project assigned by teacher The following information is for students entering the Mississippi Reading Fair. What you need to do: 1. Choose which category you will enter: a. Individual project Literary Fiction and Literary Non-fiction Narratives* b. Individual Informational Non-fiction Texts c. Group/ Family project (Literary Fiction and Non-fiction Narratives only) *NEW CLASSIFICATION (See next pages for detailed descriptions of categories.) 2. Choose a book (on your level) to read/reread and design a storyboard around your selected text 3. Identify all required elements from the book. See attached Project Requirements scoring rubrics for both LITERARY FICTION/NON-FICTION NARRATIVE and NON-FICTION categories. Be sure to use the correct Project Requirements sheet. 4. Purchase a tri-fold storyboard/backboard that meets the state requirements of 36 H x 48 W. OSUE will NOT be selling tri-fold boards this year. 5. Create a colorful and interesting storyboard display to showcase all of the fiction/nonfiction elements from the book. Storyboards must follow the specific guidelines in order to qualify for entry into the Reading Fair. Fiction and Nonfiction elements are different! 6. Include the required identifying information on the BACK of the storyboard. An entry form to complete and cut out is provided in this packet. Identifying information on the front of the storyboard will result in disqualification. 7. Send completed projects to school on November 30th th between 2:30-4:30 pm. (Projects should be delivered to the Health/PE room at the OSUE.) Projects brought before or after will not be judged. BE SURE THAT THERE IS NO PERSONAL IDENTIFYING INFORMATION ON THE FRONT OF THE BOARD.

2 Reading Fair categories: 1. Individual: Literary Fiction and Literary Non-fiction Narrative (Grades 4-5 Division E, Grade 6 Division F) Students should complete the projects with minimal parental assistance. If it is apparent to the judges that a student has had extensive assistance in this category, points will be deducted from the total score. 2. Individual: Non-Fiction texts(grades 4-5 Division H, Grade 6 Division I) Students should complete the projects with minimal parental assistance. If it is apparent to the judges that a student has had extensive assistance in this category, points will be deducted from the total score. 3. Group/Family: Literary Fiction and Literary Non-fiction Narrative only (Grades 4-5 Division L, Grade 6 Division M) Parental/family help is welcome in this category. The book should be age appropriate for the child/children. The child/children should be actively involved in the project and should be very knowledgeable about the story elements. Group/Family projects are limited to 3 participants. If a group project has students in various grades, the project should be placed in the division of the oldest student. All categories will be judged closely on whether the project shows work appropriate for the age level of the student. Note: Each student is limited to participating in only one project. Storyboard Guidelines: Storyboards must be constructed on a tri-fold project board. The board must be full-sized: 36 H x 48 W. Storyboards must include ALL of the elements listed on the scoring sheet for their category (see NEXT PAGES for checklists) Items on the storyboard may be handwritten or computer printed. Elements should be displayed in a colorful, creative way on the storyboard. Models, shadowboxes, and illustrations that fit in the middle of the display are allowed, as long as the added items do not exceed the height, width, and depth of the project board. Items may not hang over the table, or stick out past the board if set on the floor. There may not be items protruding from the back or top of the board. Items used to decorate the project should not be alive, valuable, or dangerous. Electrical cords ARE NOT allowed. Reading Fair Dates to Remember: November 30 th December 1 st Projects due between 2:30-4:30 pm in OSUE Health/PE room Project judging, winners announced by 1:00 p.m. Project viewing from 1:30-2:00 p.m. Projects will be removed from area and brought to classrooms at 2:00 pm Detailed information regarding the MS Reading Fair can be found at:
