5 A Letter From Smucket Hi Everyone, Last month we lost Simon, our 16 year old Chocolate Lab. He woke up one morning and couldn t stand. Melanie and Brodie (our Cavapoo) sat with him all morning (Brodie gave them both lots of kisses). Then Melanie took Simon to the vet and apparently he went to a place called Rainbow Bridge. Birdie kept staring into the back door all morning since Simon wasn t in the kitchen where he usually was. Birdie is still upset. She says that she could have moved into the house and taken care of him just fine. Where is this Rainbow Bridge anyway? Is it an even actual place? She s not a sentimental goat. He was a nice dog. When I was little he tried to play with me and stepped on me by accident. Melanie told him not to do that and he never did again, but then he was afraid to play with us. When we first moved here Melanie and the dogs would play in the yard while we watched. It was like having our own show. It didn t take long until we were all playing in the yard together. Several times I tried to teach Simon how to head butt. I would demonstrate all the steps for him and he would just stand there with a confused look on his face. Birdie would stare at him. You are so handsome! He d stand there with that same confused look and then lick her ear. He liked it when Melanie chased him around the table on the deck while Birdie and I watched. One day Birdie looked at them, looked at me and said, I m going in. Then she joined them running around the table. He loved snow. He would run all over the yard sticking his nose in it. We would stand there with Trevor (our Cavalier) and stare at him. Trevor doesn t like snow either. One time Simon had a toy that made a Naaaa sound when he chewed it. We followed him around to see what it was, and when he dropped it we saw that it was a toy ball. Birdie looked at me, I told you that MY Simon wouldn t eat a goat!! Toward the end he d join us on the deck. He didn t seem very steady on his feet so Birdie and I would stand on either side of him just in case he fell. He whined one day and Birdie went running over to him. Are you OK? Is he OK? Why didn t I ever learn Dog? We had one last birthday party for him. We had lots of dogs and people but it was hot that day. After a while he went inside and took a nap. He did get his own cake which he loved. A big dog named Raina came. She s a 130 pound Leonberger so we went to the garage. Aunt Christine brought her teenage doeling and her friends. They were very excited to see us and wanted to play with us but we made them come to the garage to play. We still got peanuts, though. Melanie told them to come back when there weren t any Leonbergers around. Raina seemed gentle and wouldn t hurt us. She +

6 was just BIG. I guess that when Simon was at the vet that last time they had dog cookies for him which were behind him. Even though he couldn t use his back legs and couldn t see very well he was still able to scoot completely around using his front legs to get to the cookies. The vet said, A Lab until the end.
