They will learn to recognize lines in their environment and in works of art and explore creating with lines in their own artwork. Students will be introduced to the art element of color including the color wheel and primary and secondary colors. They will learn to identify different colors in their environment and in works of art and explore creating with color in their own artwork. Students will be introduced to the art elements of shape and form. They will learn to recognize basic shapes and forms in their environment and in works of art, and explore creating art with shapes and form. Unit 4 Texture Students will be introduced to the art element of Texture. They will learn the difference between actual texture and visual texture. They will identify different textures in their environment and in works of art and explore creating different textures in their own artwork. Content Area Skills: New Jersey Technology Standards: 8.1 Educational Technology All students will use digital tools to access, manage, evaluate, and synthesize information in order to solve problems individually and collaboratively and to create and communicate knowledge. 8.2 Technology Education, Engineering, and Design All students will develop an understanding of the nature and impact of technology, engineering, technological design, and the designed world, as they relate to the individual, global society, and the environment. Identify characteristic theme-based works of dance, music, theatre, and visual art, such as artworks based on the themes of family and community, from various historical periods and world cultures. 2. Identify how artists and specific works of dance, music, theatre, and visual art reflect, and are affected by, past and present cultures. 1.3: Performance D. Visual Art 1. Create two- and three-dimensional works of art using the basic elements of color, line, shape, form, texture, and space, as well as a variety of art mediums and application methods. 2. Use symbols to create personal works of art based on selected age-appropriate themes, using oral stories as a basis for pictorial representation. 3. Employ basic verbal and visual art vocabulary to demonstrate knowledge of the materials, tools, and methodologies used to create and tell visual stories. 4. Explore the use of a wide array of art mediums and select tools that are appropriate to the production of works of art in a variety of art media. 5. Create works of art that are based on observations of the physical world and that illustrate how art is part of everyday life, using a variety of art mediums and art media. 1.4: Aesthetic Responses & Critique Methodologies GRADE K VISUAL ART CURRICULUM 3
4 A. Aesthetic Responses 1. Identify aesthetic qualities of exemplary works of art in dance, music, theatre, and visual art, and identify characteristics of the artists who created them (e.g., gender, age, absence or presence of training, style, etc.). 2. Compare and contrast culturally and historically diverse works of dance, music, theatre, and visual art that evoke emotion and that communicate cultural meaning. 3. Use imagination to create a story based on an arts experience that communicated an emotion or feeling, and tell the story through each of the four arts disciplines (dance, music, theatre, and visual art). 4. Distinguish patterns in nature found in works of dance, music, theatre, and visual art. B. Critique Methodologies 1. Observe the basic arts elements in performances and exhibitions and used them to formulate objective assessments of artworks in dance, music, theatre, and visual art. 2. Apply the principles of positive critique in giving and receiving responses to performances. 3. Recognize the making subject or theme in works of dance, music, theatre, and visual art. Unit Essential Questions Unit 1 Lines Why should we learn about art? Where in our world do we see lines? How can we create art with lines? Where in our world do we see colors? Unit 4 Texture Where in our world do we feel textures? Where in our world do we see textures? How can we use our eyes to feel something? How can we create art with textures? Unit Enduring Understandings Unit 1 Line Lines are all around us. Artists use lines to create art. Line is an element of art. A line is a mark made with a tool like a pencil, crayon, marker or paint brush that goes from one point to another. Some lines in art are Horizontal, Vertical, Diagonal, Zigzag, Curved and Broken Colors are all around us. Artists use colors to create art. Color is an element of art. The Primary colors are Red, Yellow and Blue. They can be mixed to make the Secondary Colors; Orange, Green, and Violet. Shape is all around us. Artists use shapes to create art. Shape and Form are Elements of Art. A shape is a flat, 2-dimensional flat area surrounded by an outline. Some basic shapes are squares, circles, triangles, rectangles and ovals. A Form is a solid shape that takes up space. It is three-dimensional. A sculpture is a form. You can see it from all sides. Unit 4 Title Textures are all around us. Artists use Textures to create art. Texture is an Element of Art. Everything you touch has some sort of texture (e.g. rough, smooth, bumpy, soft, furry etc ). There are two types of texture in art; Actual texture that you feel and Implied texture that you see. Artists can use texture to express thoughts and emotions in their art.
