<!-- Aliceon Coverstory Tag 1 --> <!-- --> 2009, What s Your Idea ART? on MEDIA Media art, as a rising new art form, has been suggesting creative destinations of art with its innovative forms and approaches. The idea of authenticity and identity of media art, however, is being questioned again these days. The phenomenon comes from new environment and situation, which differs from the early days of media art. The new era of media art is apparently having a transitional period. Under such circumstances, AliceOn asked the questions below to some curators in Korea and around the world and listened how they create media art projects to produce various views and directions. Based on their experiences and opinions, AliceOn would hope to be able to address the issues facing media art today and to figure out its future prospect. In 2009, Where media art is placed and headed for? Q.1 Now, what is the media art you are thinking of? Q.2 What was the core of media art projects you (or your institute) have (has) done so far? Q.3 In 2009, at this moment, what do you think of the present of media art? And what is the next phase of media art in near future you are expecting? (Where media art should be moved forward?) Q.4 What is you next media art project now your are working on? The questions were asked to the media art curators who work in and out of Korea, and the text below was written from the interviews of Shin Bo-sul(Total Museum), Shin Hyun-jin(Ssamzie Space), Cho Joo-hyun(Seoul Museum of Art), and Hwang Jung-in(Savina Museum of Contemporary Art).

Cho Joo-hyun Art Curator. Seoul Museum of Art Q 2. The recent exhibition <Responsive Eye: Digital Spectrum> at Seoul Museum of Art focused on the achievements after the op-art (art genre dealing with the themes of optic and perceptive experience and phenomenon) had absorbed scientific knowledges such as new media art and in turn brought on major effects to other contemporary art genres. From pieces creating optical illusion by borrowing traits of op-art in the mid 20th century to the works of illusionary images based on psychological response and receptive incidents, the exhibition displayed the spectrums of various phenomenons rendered by optic and perceptive cognition under today s media environment. Digital Spectrum 2008 Q 3. As media art tends to progress quickly taking in new technologies and trends unlike other forms of art, it will become more popular as exhibitions today prefer to be spectacle. Yet, one should concern that there may be a neo-greenbergian symptom being obsessed to material and form instead of pursuing artistic duty endlessly figuring out diverse derivatives of media. Shin Hyun-jin Art Curator. Ssamzie Space Q 1. The fact that people categorize those art works as media art, which defines the form before ideas, reveals the dilemma of media that the attraction of the device itself is stronger than what it is trying to say... Now artists look for cooperation between an idea of art work and the technology which best suits the idea. It will become less likely to expect an artist who deals with both technology and philosophy alone and to distinguish what a techno savvy artist does. Q 3. There has been a fall back of exhibition plans since late last year due to depression of art industry. Still, Nam June Paik Art Center has opened and small media artist groups seem to keep on experimenting on their art works. I hope those of who I met recently - dorbot.com, randomwalks who is working on data visualization project, sound artist group Taesit( 태싯 ), media performance group MDPG, and mobile-tech based dotplay - cheer up. I will look forward to see works based on augmented reality technology as I heard the technology has enhanced further. Sound Art 101

Hwang Jung-in Art Curator. Savina Museum of Contemporary Art Q 2. Savina Museum of Contemporary Art has been opening yearly exhibitions since 2005 under the theme of Art and Technology. As the exhibitions more focused on approaches to contemporary art through academic exchanges than on media art itself, we took the best way to emphasize the theme. Q 4. It is no surprise anymore that scientists give attention to contemporary art, therefore we are planning to set out business(exhibition, academy) to realize consistent interrelationship between outside experts and artists. In 2005 exhibition <ArtiST PROJECT>, we examined possibilities and limits on artists and scientists working together through workshops. Based on the results, the exhibition <2050 Future Scope> in 2009 has shown themes on future society with the scientists advice on artistic works. As a following step, we are getting ready to set up a system to sustain cooperative work between scientists and artists. Artist Project Shin Bo-seul Art Curator. Total Museum Q 1. I want to define media art more broadly. Because focusing on art than media will let us dream more possibilities of media art. I think media art is something that applies media(medium) in a different way to expand the experiences of viewers and distorts views of daily lives to create new windows to see the world. Q 2. After the exhibition <Digital Playground> from Eijungbu International Media Art Festival in 2005, Total Museum has been taking on yearly media art exhibitions since Unlike the 2005 s, the exhibitions have become more sophisticated with different themes each year. For instance, the theme last year was Hack the City!! which connected the issue of hacking to urban problems. This year, they titled it Open the Source!! to approach the concept of open source and sharing. Consistently running projects are as important as launching an individual exhibition since they generate deeper speculation on themes and allow to discover other possibilities. Here are how the interviewees defined media art. Media art takes popular medium to utilize in other ways to create new understandings to people. Messages of the media art works are delivered through the different use of medium which will expand the possibility of recognition. They thought the media art in Korea didn t have enough media-oriented exhibitions, but at the same time they mentioned dilemmas interfering such works. Almighty artists have disappeared already, however, they still could not picture clearly on how post-almighty artists will show up particularly in Korea. 404 Object not found

<!-- Korean Artist Interview --> <!-- --> Heung-sup Jung We have met an artist Heung-sup Jung who is investigating the images both of the real and the virtual world in the world of images where a lot of idealess images are floating, coming and going between the worlds. Lamb Heung-sup Jung: There are so many images around the world so we have to get them even if we do not want to. My free ideas and works on every medium are based on my experiences of an art education in France because it does not belong to the specific disciplinary approach. The world of today is the image society where seeing is just choosing. I transfers the mental actions such as collecting and assembling in the choices to the physical actions through my works.

aliceon: When we meet Your works like <FIFA2008> or <CALL OF DUTY2> something like that, we usually remind of O-sang Kwon s works due to their outer resemblance. Although there are some definite differences between their works in the way of the photo textures and pixel density, they are still similar. Heung-sup Jung: The differences between my works and his works are apparent in the approaches to the works, even though they closely resemble each other in their outward forms, which are three-dimensional sculptures made up of two-dimensional images. O-sang Kwon s artworks start from the objects which really exist in the real world. His way of producing works goes through the optical coding that he firstly takes a photo by himself to make a flat image, then he consists of the images to the three-dimensional designs. In other words, his works are products from inanimate objects or people that really exist. On the other hand, my works are not images from that certain objects. I rather choose the two-dimensional images from the beginning and make the three-dimensional sculptures(or figures) by tearing and pasting of them. It means there is no subject for photography or I choose simulacra, that are, already simulated images. After all, I can say that my way of production is post-production where the object itself can be a work. It means, in my works, those two-dimension images which are not come out from any real object and the three-dimension figures which are made up of the images coexist. In other words, this my code in usage as not a production but an application is different from the artist O-sang Kwon. Final Fantasy - Fifa aliceon : What do you think about terms media and media art? Heung-sup Jung: Media are sorts of spaces where they connect something or divide the real and the virtual at the same time. Furthermore, term of media art can be called a work which the factor media is distinguished in the whole composition and flow of the works, rather than defined it according to the genre of the works such as photos, images, or interactive arts so on. My works are as playing a visual role in the digital virtual space. Virtuality is highly putting the visual experiences first. I work to make a metaphor for the different senses and situations and interprets them through this vision. I always thinks that I must think like an amateur but work like a professional, on the other hand, I feels like that I should think like a professional but work like an amateur as well.
