4 EXHIBITIONS Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre offers a range of exhibitions throughout the year which provide an opportunity for people within and outside the Liverpool region to interact and engage with contemporary and local, national and international artists. 5 EXHIBITIONS MARSDEN GALLERY The Marsden Gallery is Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre s most intimate exhibition space enclosed in the otherwise vast site of the Centre. The Marsden Gallery space is our community gallery, where we show works for and by the community of Liverpool local area. In this space, exhibitions range from solo artist s shows to group based exhibitions, such as Practice What you Teach. LIGHT INDUSTRY 27 JAN 11 FEB Vu Quang Canh is a Vietnamese refugee who came to Australia in Settling in Western Sydney, Vu obtained employment in the growing manufacturing industry almost immediately. This was also the year that he started taking photographs, when he purchased his first SLR camera. Working in a factory during the day, Vu pursued his passion for photography during the evening, studying 2 hours each fortnight at Liverpool Technical College. He learned how to develop and print black and white film and went on to establish his own dark room to further his practice. This exhibition showcases a selection of Vu s photographic journey. It highlights the architectural heritage and unique identity of Casula Powerhouse, as well as showing the mastery of Vu s photography talent. SOUTHLINE AND OTHER METAPHORS 24 MAR 29 APR Local artist Tony Priddle has been working in Liverpool for 28 years. This painting exhibition represents the artists direct response to the specific social and geographic locations in which it is produced. PRACTICE WHAT YOU TEACH 2 24 JUN Practice What You Teach is an initiative and series of exhibitions devoted to motivating and promoting the artistic practice of art teachers. This exhibition of the same name will feature teachers from South West Sydney. Continued development of art making skills and artistic concepts can be highly beneficial to both teacher and student progress. This show exists as an opportunity for professional learning, a networking platform and ultimately, a strategy for Sydney s art teachers to maintain ongoing artistic development. HOPPER GALLERY The most traditional white space in Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is the Hopper Gallery. This gallery is climate-controlled, allowing to exhibit some of the most valuable and delicate objects including International artists. ARCHIBALD PRIZE TOURING EXHIBITION 24 MAR 6 MAY The annual Archibald Prize is eagerly anticipated by artists and audiences alike. First awarded in 1921, it is one of Australia s oldest and most prestigious art awards. Judged by the trustees of the Art Gallery of NSW and awarded to the best portrait painting, the Archibald Prize exhibition is a who s who of Australian culture from politicians to celebrities, sporting heroes to artists. This touring exhibition is an opportunity to see all the finalists in the Archibald Prize 2017, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre has the wonderful opportunity to be one of the touring venues for this fabulous exhibition. This exhibition will also be on display in the Switch Gallery. THE 65TH BLAKE PRIZE 12 MAY 1 JUL The biennial Blake Prize is back. The Blake Prize takes its name from William Blake. The Prize aims to encourage contemporary artists of disparate styles, religious and spiritual allegiances to create significant works of art which engage in relevant conversations and negotiations. The 65h Blake challenges artists to engage in conversations concerning faith, spirituality, religion, hope, humanity, social justice, belief and nonbelief. This exhibition will be on display in the Switch and Turbine Galleries as well. HEAR NO EVIL/ SEE NO EVIL 13 JAN 18 MAR Established Western Sydney artist Locus Jones works in his studio listening to the news, transcribing the horrors of human suffering into his paintings. He juxtaposes the everyday atrocities with the absurdity of popular culture news. Showing many unseen works this exhibition of paint and politics on paper will generate many intergenerational discussions. 6 7

6 EXHIBITIONS SWITCH GALLERY In the Switch Gallery, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre hosts some of the most exciting and innovative exhibitions. The Switch Gallery showcases the existing original architectural features of the Powerstation, allowing audiences to catch glimpses into the Powerhouse s history. REDBACK GRAPHIX 12 MAY 18 MAR Design and screenprinting studio Redback Graphix used the power of the printed image to educate and inspire. From 1979 to 1994, Redback Graphix produced posters that combined witty graphics with eye-watering colours to give voice to a raft of pressing social issues from AIDS awareness, alcohol abuse and human rights through to the promotion of local film screenings and benefit gigs. Originally designed for the street, these posters are now considered icons of an era and are highly collectable. TURBINE GALLERY The Upper Turbine Gallery runs the around Turbine Hall intersecting the Kids Gallery on a mezzanine. The clear linear space provides an extension for our visitor experience as the gallery hovers as a central hall viewing platform for the Arts Centre. In this space exhibitions comprise of digital media, purpose built black boxes, sound art which reverberates across the centre or a walking experience of wall positioned artworks. MANGA HOKUSAI 6 JAN - 4 FEB By introducing some of the similarities and differences between modern Japanese manga and Hokusai Manga, a collection of sketches by the ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai ( ), this exhibition sets out to introduce this unique field of Japanese culture. Focusing on pictorial storytelling and participatory culture of manga from different periods, the exhibits include panels, books, videos, and a group of new works by contemporary manga artists. This exhibition will also continue into the Kids Gallery. KIDS GALLERY The Kids Gallery is curated to provide a year-round integrated visual learning environment in relation to the main exhibition programs at Casula Powerhouse Liverpool. The gallery features a range of interactive environments that encourage children and adults alike to investigate major themes or key aspects of artworks on display. The Kids Gallery provides an accessible space dedicated to the development of visual thinking. NEXT 10 FEB 17 MAR An annual exhibition of HSC artworks from local high schools. Featuring over twenty promising South Western Sydney artists, these highlights have been selected from local high schools located in the City of Liverpool. A wonderful opportunity to see the fantastic bodies of work by the next upcoming artists. 8 9

7 VISUAL ARTS WORKSHOPS Our fantastic visual arts workshops engage and excite students and teachers alike. One of the cores values of these workshops is the exhibition tour. These tours promote discussions and critical thought around contemporary art and art practices. They allow, both students and teachers to engage through an art making activity delivered by professional artist facilitators. Students will experience the opportunity to learn techniques and explore their creativity through still life, paste ups (street art), ceramics or portraiture. These workshops can be tailored to suit your students age and abilities. 8 FREEZE FRAME STILL LIFE WORKSHOP Students will be introduced to artists and concepts relating to the topic of Still Life. Students will learn about modern and contemporary artists who explore the subject of Still Life within their practice, whilst engaging in a practical art-making activity. Activities students will learn within this workshop are: Introduction to Still Life and Exhibition Tour Still Life Art- Making Component Discussion and Conclusion about Still Life This workshop will have strong links to both the curriculum outcomes, as well to the current exhibition on display. 120 MINUTES $15.00 PER STUDENT SPUNKY AND PUNKY PASTE UPS WORKSHOP Students will be introduced to artists and concepts relating to Street Art. Students will interact with professional street artists, allowing them to discuss and engage in contemporary street art techniques. Students also get to opportunity to do paste ups on the Casula Tanks and learn the art of street art. Activities students will learn within this workshop are: Introduction to Street Art and Exhibition Tour Street Art: Create your own Paste Ups Discussion and Conclusion about Street Art This workshop will have strong links to both the curriculum outcomes, as well to the current exhibition on display. 120 MINUTES $15.00 PER STUDENT CLAY CRITTERS CERAMICS WORKSHOP Students will be introduced to artists and concepts relating to the art of ceramics. Students will have the opportunity to create wonderful and exciting ceramic sculptures that are informed by current ceramicists practices. Activities students will learn within this workshop are: Introduction to Contemporary Ceramics and Exhibition Tour Ceramic Art- Making Component Discussion and Conclusion about Contemporary Ceramics This workshop will have strong links to both the curriculum outcomes, as well to the current exhibition on display. 120 MINUTES $15.00 PER STUDENT POSING PORTRAITURE WORKSHOP In this workshop, students will be introduced to artists and concepts relating to subject matter of Portraiture. Students will learn about modern and contemporary artists who explore the concept of Portraiture within their practice, whilst engaging in a practical art-making activity. 10 INTERSECTION, CHRYSALIS ATYP THEATRE Nothing beats a place that s ours. Nothing can. Intersection is the meeting point for a collection of short plays written by the most exciting young playwrights in the country. A mad road map of young lives travelling very different routes, the production offers a unique snapshot of modern Australia. Critically acclaimed in its first incarnation, we return again to explore the excitement, terror, banality and electricity of being 17. ATYP is a critical part of the national theatre ecology. Intersection reflects Australia back at us, explaining in young people s own words what their concerns are, what their hopes are, and what we can expect from our artists in the future. See the classic kids tale in an allnew Australian adaptation by multi award-winning playwright Mary Anne Butler, starring Dubs Yunupingu as Alice the first time the role has been played by an Indigenous woman. Published more than 150 years ago, Carroll s classic tale of the girl who fell down the rabbit hole has proven as timeless as it is entertaining. Directed by Cristabel Sved (Before/After, Sydney Theatre Company), Alice in Wonderland is a brand new production from the producer of the critically acclaimed The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show (Sydney Festival 2015). Since its publication 150 years ago, Alice s Adventures in Wonderland has kept a powerful grip on the public imagination. A family torn apart by murder, a son burdened with the truth and the task of avenging his father, and a country on the brink of war. Anguish, passion and desperation collide in this tragic telling of Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark who is tormented by the impossibility of his dilemma, and who remains one of theatre s most fascinating characters. 11 THE LOST BOYS MERRIGONG THEATRE COMPANY At a time when sexuality and the welfare of our young people are so hotly debated, The Lost Boys takes an unflinching look at the violence of our history and the struggles persistently encountered by people because of their sexual orientation. This is a brave, vital and human play that bears witness to our times. WED 6 & THU 7 JUN 11AM $20 PER STUDENT AGES YEARS 18 TREE OF LIFE TREEHOUSE THEATRE In Tree of Life, young refugees who have experienced the horror of war, trauma and persecution, will perform their own true stories in a symphony of spoken word, music and movement. Now attending Miller Technology High School and Intensive English Centre, these students will charm and inspire with their humour, honesty and innocence as they perform pivotal moments from their lives. The performance consists of some 30 vignettes which will leave audiences not only laughing and smiling but with a greater understanding of the refugee journey and the amazing contribution these young refugees are already making to the Australian community. THU 14 JUN 10AM & 12.30PM FRI 15 JUN 10AM, 12.30PM & 7PM $20 PER STUDENT AGES YEARS CHRISTINE ANU: MY ISLAND HOME IN CONVERSATION JASON WATSON MANAGEMENT After the success of the 2017 season, Australia s most iconic female Indigenous entertainer will return in 2018 with her acclaimed intimate show Christine Anu: In Conversation & Song. On this very special occasion Christine will share personal anecdotes on life, her advocacy work for diversity and inclusion, and the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language in Australian culture. Christine will also incorporate the 2018 NAIDOC Week theme. Christine will perform a selection of songs from her acclaimed music career, including songs from the Torres Strait Islands, Sunshine on a Rainy Day and the unofficial national anthem My Island Home. TUE 10 JUL NAIDOC WEEK 11AM $20 PER STUDENT AGES YEARS THEATRE WORKSHOPS At Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, we also offer the opportunity to undertake theatre workshops. The workshops can be catered to all ages and explore traditional and contemporary understandings of the art of performance. Students can engage in Shakespeare, comedy and movement based improvisation. These workshops enhance and develop the students capacity to express themselves through dramatic skills and create a foundation of awareness for theatrical composition. It was designed to coincide with the previously successful REFUGEES exhibition. Due to the success of the project, it has become a permanent special outreach workshop available. Post-Future seeks to create a meaningful exchange between students and those newly arrived to Australia. Pop up art packages, which will include artwork and letters, will be created by the students and then sent to refugees and asylum seekers. CPAC JUNIORS AGES YEARS CPAC Juniors is a companion to CPAC Youth, aimed at a younger audience. It gives aspiring young artists, event organisers and arts workers an opportunity to connect with like-minded people, gain insight into the inner workings of an art centre, build their creative portfolio and develop their creative ideas and skills to make a positive impact on the South-West Sydney arts community. 19 VISITORS ETIQUETTE Please read the below information and ensure that all students and teachers are aware of how to behave within a gallery and museum setting. ARRIVING AT THE CENTRE Aim to arrive at least minutes prior to your allocated excursion booking time. Check in with the Front of House staff and wait for the education officers and guides to meet your school group. If required, place all bags in the storage area as directed. Students and teachers should only carry essential items into the Gallery. Ask your students to get these items out of their bags before you enter the Gallery Spaces. Before you begin your tour/ visit, arrange a meeting time and place elsewhere in the Gallery so that you can exit the Gallery as one group. As directed, please move to your first Gallery location immediately. If you have booked a serviced visit/program, meet your education officers and guide at reception. IN THE CENTRE Remember student behaviour, safety and security is the teachers responsibility. Groups must be supervised at all times. Please read the following important points aloud to students. Be aware that you are moving through Gallery spaces, with artworks on display. Appropriate behaviour is essential. Flash Photography is NOT permitted in some of the exhibition spaces Sitting down on plinths in the exhibition spaces is NOT permitted. Touching artwork is NOT permitted. A pencil and small sketchbook are preferred. Ballpoint/felt-tip pens are NOT permitted. Eating, drinking or chewing gum in the Gallery is NOT permitted. Do not run in the Gallery spaces. CENTRE FACILITIES Wet weather In the case of wet weather, there is a space undercover in the turbine hall for students to eat and drink their morning tea and lunch. Bags and storage The Gallery has limited storage facilities for bags. Groups are advised where possible no bags or the minimum amount of bags necessary. Food and drink Food and drink can be purchased from the cafe inside Casula Powerhouse. Bellbird offers a variety of healthy and exciting food options. Vegetarian, gluten free and halal options are available if bookings are made ahead of time. Please contact Bellbird on (02) If you are not purchasing lunch, the outside area is avaiable for you and your students.
