1 Curriculum Overview Sheet Subject: English Year 7: Term Autumn 1 Beowulf Pupils will study Beowulf, the oldest recorded story, to build up an understanding of the Anglo- Saxon culture, values and traditions. They will also explore the plot, characters, setting and theme, as well as key poetic features. Autumn 2 The Prologue to the Canterbury Tales Pupils will study The Canterbury Tales to build up an understanding of medieval literature, culture and values. Students will gain a secure knowledge of the era as well as the characters and plot. Spring 1 Spring 2 Summer 1 Macbeth Pupils will study Macbeth to build up an understanding of the social, historical and cultural context in which the play was written. They will also explore the plot, characters, setting, language and theme, as well as key dramatic devices. Macbeth Pupils will finish studying Macbeth. They will then explore how to write to present a point of view, as well as how to write a newspaper article. Romantic poetry Students will study a range of Romantic poetry from Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge and Keats. They will build on their contextual knowledge learnt in the previous terms. Students will have a good understanding of the importance of these poems and will have a secure knowledge of poetic

Gothic Literature - Victorian Monsters Pupils will study a selection of ghost / mystery short stories from the Victorian era to build up an understanding of the historical, social and cultural context (including genre) of the time in which it was written. They will explore closely the plot, characters, setting, language and themes, as well as identifying and analysing how tension / fear is created in the stories, and why the stories are

3 effective. Spring 2 Summer 1 Gothic Writing Pupils will study to study Victorian gothic stories and will then use their knowledge of the genre to write their own short story. War Literature Pupils will study a selection of war literature to build up an understanding of the historical, social and cultural context (including genre) of the time in which it was written. They will also study closely the works of Tennyson, Owen, Sassoon and Brooke, exploring the themes and ideas of the poems, as well as learning how to identify and analyse key poetic features. Pupils will also learn how to compare and contrast different texts. Also they will learn how to use language creatively, imaginatively and persuasively, including rhetorical devices.
