1 August Intro Unit Seminar discussion on their understanding of the differences between the 8 big schools of literary theory. Intro Unit To recognize the function of literary criticism as a tool for understanding and interpreting Intro Unit O ral and free written analysis of individual poems and passages from the prose that we have read in class. The summer novels: Jane Eyre & The Great Gatsby. Review of the writing process and revision. Introduction to poetic terminology and devices. Poetry drill and the analysis of poems in unit #1. To be able to differentiate between the schools of criticism. To be able to read through the specific critical lenses and apply the critical viewpoint to the piece of prose/poetry. To come away with multiple perspectives on the same piece of Short in-class essays using multiple theories on the poems that we have read. Timed writings on poems, using a specific literary theory. Poetry drill and the analysis of poems in unit #1. Close reading and analysis of significant passages in preparation for the AP timed writing exercises. Consider the weaknesses in their summer essays; prepare alternate drafts incorporating the teacher annotations and recommendations. Analyze poems for theme and use of poetical device. Students will formulate hypothetical prompts for timed writing discussion questions. Timed writings in class and at home. Write a revised version of the first graded paper. Discuss how this adaptation was made and re-discuss scenes that were analyzed in the text. Talk about and respond to in writing how modern drama has many of the same functions as ancient drama, such as provoking reaction and inspiring catharsis in an audience.
