3 INTRODUCTION Welcome to the East West Academy Feng Shui and BaZi (Chinese astrology) Mastery Programs. The aim of this course is to introduce, investigate and learn the Eastern and Western principles that make up a holistic and empowered approach to life. ABOUT MARLYNA Marlyna Los is a master level Feng Shui, Chinese Metaphysics and Chinese astrology expert, Spiritual Teacher and Counselor who shares her knowledge and insights for life and living in clear and simple ways. 5 WHAT IS FENG SHUI? Feng Shui is the study of Qi (a broad word for energy). At the centre of the philosophy and practice of Feng Shui is the awareness that the land is alive and filled with Qi (energy). The ancient Chinese understood good Feng Shui to mean an environment that supports wealth and prosperity, peace of mind, good health, strong relationships and long life. The term Feng itself means wind or air, and Shui, means water. The words together in a broader sense refer to the tangible and intangible energy patterns and forces of the physical environment. It is about finding the positive Qi and tapping into it (by direction, location and formula). When a property and home has good Qi and is able to receive it the occupants of the property feel better, sleep better, have more energy and attract more opportunities. It is important to distinguish Classical Feng Shui from New Age Feng Shui. The term classical does not mean old fashioned. Classical Feng Shui refers to the use of classical Feng Shui theories. These theories are based on ancient texts along with centuries of substantiated evidence. They have proven themselves with time; the importance today is learning how to adapt the theories to modern situations. Classical Feng Shui applications include Flying Stars (Fei Xing, Xuan Kong), Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai), Three Harmony (San He), Three Cycles (San Yuan), 64 Hexagrams (Xuan Kong Da Gua), (BaZi). New Age Feng Shui describes categories of Feng Shui that do not utilize a compass or directions and rely on intention and symbolism and the placement of objects. While authentic Feng Shui is complex, it is practiced on simple and sophisticated levels. Core theories of Classical Feng Shui involve an understanding of Qi and Landforms, the concepts of Yin and Yang, the Ba Gua, and the Five Elements. Core basics include understanding direction vs. location and understanding how Qi moves and flows and then applying these concepts to your home or business. A foreword by Joey Yap It's fair to say that the integrity of Feng Shui has been put through its paces recently. In the late nineties, there was a sudden 'gold rush' of sorts as new age or pop Feng Shui took off. Suddenly, it seemed that a Feng Shui makeover consisted of little more than placing specific objects, trinkets and ornaments in the home. This watered down, erroneous version of Feng Shui soon died a death, however, as Classical Feng Shui became widely studied once again. In true, Classical Feng Shui, time and the environment are what really matter. I can understand why pop Feng Shui was popular for a period of time it is, after all, a lot easier to sell someone an ornamental toad and promise Feng Shui benefits than it is to teach them about formulas, charts and sophisticated interpretation methods! None the less, Classical Feng Shui delivers genuine results and people are waking up to this fact. I have made it my mission to continue educating people about Classical Feng Shui and the very real benefits of studying it. Marlyna, like so many others, has long been fascinated by Feng Shui and had already been taught by many well respected masters before she made the decision to join my class. I immediately noticed her passion for the art. Picking up Classical Feng Shui can be a daunting process for anyone but she tackled it head on; her determination was all the more impressive to me because western students often struggle to simply get their head around the technical terms in Chinese. Very quickly, she came to display a deep understanding of the subject during her time in class. I normally only observe this level of understanding in students who had spent many, many years at study. To put it simply, she was a natural, and it was clear that she could share her take on the subject for the benefit of others. There are two components in Feng Shui: forms and formulas. Marlyna addresses urban Form Feng Shui in this comprehensive book. When we speak about formulas, we refer to techniques such as San Yuan, Xuan Kong, 8 Mansions and San He where often, sophisticated calculations are required to determine outcomes. Forms are also known as Luan Tou Feng Shui in Classical Feng Shui which translates loosely into Faces of the Mountain '. When we talk about forms we refer to environmental features such as mountains and rivers which determine the interaction of Qi and the stars. Good forms can enhance the quality of a positive star and smooth out the negative energies while bad forms, conversely, can aggravate negative

12 stars and nullify the good energies. To correctly evaluate the Feng Shui of a property, you must have the ability to see a kind of invisible life force that influences the environment. Marlyna can do this and this is the truly difficult part of Classical Feng Shui.
