1 Curriculum Standard One: The student will use his/her senses to perceive works of art, objects in nature, events, and the environment. 1. The student will analyze the aesthetic qualities of his/her own artworks and the work of others and refine his/her own artworks. A. Can the student demonstrate an understanding of works in ceramics by analyzing what the artist presents in visual form? The student will identify how an artist used the visual language of art (the elements of art and the principles of design) to convey ideas, feelings, and emotions. 1
2 Curriculum Standard Two: The student will identify visual structures and functions of art, using the language of the visual arts. 1. The student will comprehend the aesthetics of perception through the use of the visual arts vocabulary. 2. The student will discriminate among a variety of visual structures and functions to perceive commonalties and differences. A. Can the student demonstrate knowledge and understanding of visual arts vocabulary? A. After viewing a variety of ceramic objects, can the student find and discuss common attributes among them? The student will view a wide variety of ceramic objects and identify similarities and differences in class discussions. After viewing a variety of ceramic objects, the student will write comparative essays discussing common attributes and differences. 2
3 Curriculum Standard Three: The student will develop knowledge of and artistic skills in a variety of visual arts media and technical processes. 1. The student will become aware of the elements of art and principles of design using a variety of ceramic processes. A. Can the student demonstrate the elements of art and principles of design using a variety of ceramic techniques in his/her ceramic art works? The student will demonstrate basic handbuilding techniques (pinch, coil, and slab) through a series of introductory projects, such as bowls and vases. The student will demonstrate basic wheel techniques through a series of introductory projects, such as bowls and cylinders. The student will demonstrate knowledge and use of basic glazing techniques (dipping, pouring, brushing, and spraying) through glazing his/her introductory projects. 3
4 Curriculum Standard Four: The student will create original artworks based on personal experiences or responses. 1. The student will create ceramic artworks communicating specific ideas. A. Can the student demonstrate the ability to effectively use elements of art and principles of design in his/her ceramic artwork in the solving of an art problem? The student will demonstrate an appropriate level of control and craftsmanship in at least three ceramic techniques. The student will select pieces of his/her ceramic artworks and discuss their strengths using appropriate ceramic vocabulary. 4
5 Curriculum Standard Five: The student will develop skills in visual arts and appreciation for using the visual arts in lifelong learning. 1. The student will analyze and discuss the ways in which his/her own work, and that of others, use media effectively to translate ideas, feelings, and values into visual statements of aesthetic merit. B. Can the student analyze and discuss his/her ceramic artworks and the works of others? The student will critique his/her work and work of others both orally and in written form. 5
6 Curriculum Standard Six: The student will explore the role of the visual arts in culture and human history 1. The student will gain an understanding of artworks from a variety of cultures by describing the roles that specific artworks play in those societies. A. Can the student demonstrate an understanding that the visual arts and artists reflect, play a role in, and influence culture? The student will discuss the purpose(s) of ceramics from major time periods and cultures from early man to the present. The student will research the ceramic traditions of his/her cultural or ethnic origin as a basis for the creation of a ceramic work that reflects his/her heritage. 6
7 Curriculum Standard Seven: The student will investigate major themes in historical and contemporary periods and styles of the visual arts throughout the world. 1. The student will identify, describe, interpret, and analyze stylistic elements of specific themes and ideas in a variety of cultures from art historical periods. A. Can the student demonstrate an understanding of major ceramic art traditions and styles in a variety of times and places? The student will write a composition or journal entry demonstrating an understanding of a selected historical period or style of art. The student will analyze specific characteristics of artwork in various cultures. 7
8 Curriculum Standard Eight: The student will derive meaning from artworks through analysis, interpretation, and judgment 1. The student will analyze the variety of reasons for creating ceramic artworks and explore various purposes for their creation. A. Can the student demonstrate an understanding of art criticism and analyze and assess the qualities and merits of works of ceramic art using those steps? The student will discuss the steps of art criticism (description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment) in viewing ceramic artwork. 8
