3 3 Introduction: Nature and The Natural in the Middle Ages The following seven articles are a product of the Sixth Annual North Texas Medieval Graduate Student Symposium held at the University of North Texas in April Initiated in 2005, the Symposium is a two-day event comprised of a Keynote Address delivered by a renowned professional in the field of Medieval Studies and the presentation of twelve to fifteen graduate student research papers. The primary directive of the Medieval Symposium is to bring together medieval graduate students from the various disciplines under the umbrella of Medieval Studies Art History, History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Religion, Foreign Languages, Architecture and Archaeology for collegial exchange within a professional-style venue. Over the course of the Symposium s seven-year history some one-hundred medieval graduate students representing over fifty different American and European universities have contributed papers and participated in an atmosphere of intellectual exchange meant to facilitate a pedagogically rich atmosphere, promote new scholarship and foster professional networks. Chosen on the merit of the originality of their thesis, validity of their argument, and relevancy to the year s theme, the student papers are reviewed externally and critiqued internally by UNT s medieval faculty, who also act as session discussants for the event. Integral to this process of professional development is the example set by the delivery of the Keynote Address. Engaging themes such as East Meets West in the
4 4 Middle Ages, Language and Communication in the Medieval World, Saints in the Middle Ages, and Geography and the Medieval World, these professional addresses have been delivered by Professors Corine Schleif and Volker Schier form Arizona State University, Professor Joan Holladay of the University of Texas, Austin, Professor Janet Marquardt of Eastern Illinois University, and Professors D. Fairchild Ruggles and Anne D. Hedeman from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The theme for the 2012 Symposium, from which the papers for this volume of Middle Ground were chosen, was Nature and the Natural in the Middle Ages. The keynote, entitled Medieval Art and The Wonders of the Natural World: The Strange Case of the King s Elephant, was delivered by Dr. Jean Givens, a medieval art historian from the University of Connecticut. Exploring the visual evidence, Dr. Givens challenged the audience to look carefully at the ways in which something as unique and unusual as an elephant was described, characterized, and represented by various social, political, and economic factions in the Middle Ages. In doing so, she articulated the parameters of many of the questions posed by the student papers. While these papers have been separated into two sessions- Nature and the Living and Nature and the Built Environment, all of them question our modern, more science-based perceptions of nature and remind us that while nature was understood as part of the natural world, it was also integral to the comprehension of the spiritual world as the things of nature were known to be both provided by God and a reflection of his
5 5 divine perfection. Where and how we see the nuances of this complex correlation being addressed, referenced, or debated forms the common thread linking the student papers. Taking on a most familiar and personal aspect of nature, Kristi Reese explores the medieval medical practice of analyzing urine, looking specifically at the problems this practice posed for the late medieval Church. Examining various types of medieval manuscripts where depictions of the practice were depicted, Reese links the more satirical of these images to the Church s condemnation of prophesy and fortune-telling, thus giving us an insight into the intricate relationship between science and faith in the period before the Renaissance when these issues were paramount. Challenging our notion of the sensual as a natural phenomenon, Kelly Bevin Butler suggests that pain as a bodily sensation could not only be perceived or felt through meditative engagement with visual representations, but could be employed as a metaphysical stimulus and source of spiritual identification through the physically rhythmic and methodical process of weaving. Drawing on the vast scholarship related to women s propensity for sensual engagement their need to actually touch, smell, taste, hear, as well as see Butler illustrates the relationship between the spiritual goals of a particular group of nuns and their professional work as weavers. Rounding out the Nature and the Living session, Miranda Metcalf takes on the question of gender within the late medieval Church. Metcalf suggests that while the presence of a lapdog in the depiction of a domestic setting has been shown to suggest iconographically the existence of a female inhabitant, the same lapdog when depicted
6 6 in the domestic setting of a clerical man, has a much more varied and subtle meaning one that is particularly telling of the Church s tolerance, but not overt approval of intergender relationships within the clerical ranks. Looking to the built environment, the four papers of the second session investigate how various natural elements water, light, plants, and animal products were exploited for their inherent integrity given their divine origin and metaphysical properties. We begin with Cecilia Feldman, who highlights both the god-given and life-sustaining qualities of water in the ancient Roman world. Feldman illustrates that consideration of the monumental hydraulic infrastructure built in the Roman world left a lasting legacy on experience of urban water use and cultural attitudes towards water in the Middle ages. Similarly, Joseph Hartman illustrates how plant growth could be equated with geometric patterns, the two combined to replicate both ritual movement and liturgical thought. Using the mosaic floor and apsidal imagery of Rome s San Clemente chapel as his case in point, Hartman suggests that the viewing public s eye was pulled along the axial path leading from the western door through the choir at the crossing, to the base of the apse by the mosaic patterns of the floor to meet and follow the trunk and spreading arms of Christ s tree-like cross depicted in the mosaics of the eastern apse. He argues that this visual journey reflected the mirrored relationship between the earthly and heavenly Jerusalem signaled in the liturgy performed by the clerics as they processed physically along this same path.
7 7 Like Feldman and Hartman, Andrea Recek sought to understand the various meanings entailed in a material that was considered both richly luxurious and metaphysically inspirational in this case, ivory. Treasured in both the Islamic east and Christian west, Recek examines the ways in which ivory objects, originally fabricated in the east for a secular/courtly function, came to be appropriated in the west for Christian liturgical use specifically because they possessed and represented both qualities Finally it is the most metaphysical of all natural elements--light that proves revealing for Kristin Berry. Seeking to understand the architectural dilemmas underlying the subtle shift from late Romanesque apsidal widow configurations to the renowned light of the early Gothic windows at Saint Denis, Berry diagrams the directional movement of the sun in relation to the windows at Saint Martin in Paris to discover and illustrate that the designers of these transitional churches were not only concerned with the mystical qualities of light, but were fully aware of its naturally occurring seasonal shifts in altitude. Accommodating the nature of natural light allowed them to enhance its metaphysical properties. We hope that, like the participants of the 2012 North Texas Medieval Graduate Student Symposium, the readers of these papers will be enlightened and inspired by the correlations and cross-references within the volume, for like nature itself, the possibilities for future insights are limitless.
