5 Photography is an art form but like other art forms it is primarily a means of communication. It has the ability to evoke emotion and action. With that power, comes social responsibility. Photography as a communication tool can be used both positively and negatively to influence. Consider the fashion industry and the images that portray and the notion of ideal beauty. Think about the MEME that goes viral on social media The PAPARAZZI that invade privacy.. What about the image posted without permission on INSTAGRAM that is used to belittle and bully The or the images of suffering that cause people to think, feel and act All of these are a manipulation of emotion through imagery

6 Your job: FIND 3 examples of SOCIALLY IRRESPONSIBLE or HARMFUL use of the photographic medium. FIND 3 examples of when photography has been used responsibly to promote positive change or values. For each example, provide a brief written explanation of your choice and how or why the image was used to influence behaviour or values positively or negatively. CREATE: A MEME with a positive message topic is your choice (environment, bullying, caring for others, tolerance) An image that promotes true beauty and promotes having a positive self image and accepting ourselves beauty does not have to mean physical beauty An image that encourages people to think before they bully or post something that could be hurtful EXPECTATIONS COVERED: CREATING AND PRESENTING: A1. The Creative Process: apply the creative process to create a variety of art works, individually and/or collaboratively; A2. The Elements and Principles of Design: apply elements and principles of design to create art works for the purpose of self expression and to communicate ideas, information, and/or messages; A3. Production and Presentation: produce art works, using a variety of media/materials and traditional and/or emerging technologies, tools, and techniques, and demonstrate an understanding REFLECTING, RESPONDING AND ANALYZING: B1. The Critical Analysis Process: demonstrate an understanding of the critical analysis process by examining, interpreting, evaluating, and reflecting on various art works; B2. Art, Society, and Values: demonstrate an understanding of how art works reflect the society in which they were created, and of how they can affect personal values; FOUNDATIONS: C3. Responsible Practices: demonstrate an understanding of responsible practices related to visual arts
