Detective Figurative Language Activity Cards

The chair was as shaky as a newborn horse trying to stand up. The calm lake was a mirror, reflecting the mountains in the distance. I have a million things to do today. The wind whispered through the dark and gloomy forest. The old floor croaked as we walked slowly down the hall. My favorite teacher is as smart as a rocket scientist.

When my dad makes up his mind, he is a rock, not budging an inch. Mary will be back in just a second. The gardener added the soil to his crops believing he was making them happy. The old engine chugged down the rickety track. The painting is as colorful as a rainbow. The lava was a blanket of fire that scorched all the plants in its path.

When Jamie told us the joke, we nearly died laughing. As we walked through the scorching desert, the sun beat down on us. The truck s brakes squeaked in the distance. The waterfall makes music as beautiful as a symphony orchestra. Spinning contentedly, the spider was an artist preparing a masterpiece. My mother is always working.

Time crawled as Tim sat in the hot detention room painfully watching the clock tic. Edwin s guitar strings twanged the sad melody of his song. The parrot has feathers as bright as a neon sign. During the holiday traffic the highway was one long parking lot. Uncle Larry is the smartest man in the world. The lumberjack leveled the many trees as his chainsaw sang its deadly song.

The tennis ball whistled by my ear. The big shade tree welcomes me like an oasis in the desert. The ice cream bar was a snowstorm in her mouth in the heat of the day. My friend runs so fast that all I see is a blur when she goes by. Each shiny pair of high heels called out the Monica as she walked through the store. The fire crackled as we sat nearby listening to Grandpa s story.

My uncle s head is as bald as the full moon. His job hunt was a puzzle that was missing the final piece. The dictionary weighed a ton. The clouds are looking glum today. A4gghy The snake hissed at its prey to warn of an attack. The first day of school was as frightening as giving a speech.

The lawyers were sharks in the ocean of the courtroom. Megan has always been a clown. The old car died on the side of the road. I purchased my dream car online with a click of a mouse. The mud outside is as goopy as my baby brother s baby food. On Christmas Eve, the shopping mall was a jungle of people.

Nolan doesn t know how to stop talking. Bright flashes of lightning were dancing in the sky. Quack, quack went the ducks as we threw them out stale bread. The lost dog has hair as tangled as a spider web. The spaghetti was a tangled ball of yard on his plate. At the post office, I waited forever in line.

The rain pounded to the ground as everyone ran for cover. I could hear their buzzing, so I knew there was bee s nest around here somewhere. SIMILE A figure of speech comparing two unlike things that is often introduced by like or as

METAPHOR Comparing two things using the word is or was HYPERBOLE Big exaggeration, usually with humor

PERSONIFICATION Giving something human like qualities ONOMATOPOEIA Naming a thing or an action by imitating the sound associated with it
