6 1 It is still valuable for young adults to read Harper Lee s powerful novel, over 50 years after it was written. Because the experiences we have as children universally shape who we are as adults, this novel, told from the point of view of a young girl, Scout, is as relevant to young adults today as it was 3 when it was written. In this novel, Scout, her brother Jem, and their friend Dill look at their world with a clarity most of the adult characters do not possess. The lesson that children often see truths adults do not is realized by Scout s character in To Kill a Mockingbird through her simple understanding that all people are basically good. 4 2

7 Introduction Paragraph Breakdown 1 st sentence The first sentence grabs the attention of the reader by prompting them to read on: it states a challenging opinion and invites a response, creating a dialogue between reader & writer. 2 nd & 3 rd sentence Purpose of these sentences is to back up the opinion from the first sentence that this novel is still relevant today. Also creates a connection between the first sentence & the thesis statement while giving a general background of the story / characters. 3 rd Sentence is a bridge to the thesis statement. It directly connects to it. 4 th sentence, thesis Always last sentence. Answers prompt question. Must have three parts: the subject, an opinion, & a preview.

Just like the blueprint of a building tells you what the finished product is supposed to look like, the blueprint of an essay permits you to see the shape of your ideas before you start churning out whole paragraphs. ex. through his simple understanding of basic human rights in the face of inequality. In the blueprint, the author signals an intention to support the precise opinion. 10
