2 Hi Parents! Welcome back to school...and welcome to second grade! Your child will have weekly homework this year. The homework packet will be sent home on Mondays (or the first day of the school week), and is due on Friday (or the last day of the school week). The skills covered in the homework are aligned to our Common Core Curriculum. They are things we are learning in class, but I encourage you to work through the homework with your child, or check it each night. Please sign off when you have checked it. If you have any questions about the homework, or your child s assignments, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to working with you and your child this year!

3 Common Core Standards: ELA: RI.2.2. Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text. RF.2.4. 9 Apple Time! reading October marks the beginning of the fall season. Some people also call this season autumn. In October, many people enjoy picking and eating apples. Fall is the season when apples are ready for harvest. That means they are fully grown and ripe. This is the time when you can pick and eat apples right off the tree! There are many types of apples, and they grow in all different colors, like red, yellow, and green. Apples grow on trees in big fields called orchards. Many families take trips to orchards to go apple picking. Then, they take them home and make apple pies, apple cider, apple bread, and all kinds of apple goodies. Apples are so yummy, and healthy, too! 1

14 The Pumpkin Patch reading One fall day, Johnny and his family went to the Pumpkin Patch. He was so excited for the fun day. First, they went on a hayride. The man driving the tractor was dressed like a scarecrow. Then, they all picked apples. Johnny got almost 12 apples in his basket. Next, the whole family walked through the corn maze. Johnny s sister almost got lost, but Johnny held her hand to keep her safe. Lastly, it was time to pick out a family pumpkin. Johnny s sister wanted to get a tiny pumpkin. She thought it was cute and the same size as her baby doll. Johnny wanted the biggest pumpkin because he thought it would make a cool jack-o-lantern. His mom thought it would be too heavy, so she picked out a medium sized one, and put it in the car. Everyone got in the car and drove home. It was such a great day. Johnny can t wait to go back next year! 2

19 Pumpkins READING Pumpkins can be big and round. They grow on vines lying on the ground. Some pumpkins are small and bumpy. Finding the perfect one can make you grumpy. Pumpkins can be orange or white. Make sure you pick the one that s right. Carving a pumpkin can be so much fun. It ll be a jack-o-lantern when you re all done. Make a funny face, or one that will scare. As long as you love it, no one will care. Put it on the porch, and drop a light inside. The face will glow and you ll shine with pride! 1. 24 4 Bats READING Bats are very cool animals. Some people think they are scary, but, in fact, they are very interesting. Bats are nocturnal animals. That means they sleep during the day, and are awake at night. They spend most of the night hunting for food. Most bats eat insects, but there are some that like to eat fruit. Bats are mammals, just like you and me! They fly like birds, but they have fur all over their bodies. Bats live in caves. They hang upside down by their feet, and fly out of the caves at night. Bats cannot see very well, so they use their sense of hearing to help them find food and keep safe. Finding food can be hard for a bat, so they use echolocation to help them. Echolocation is when a bat makes a sound, and it echoes off an object, then bounces back in their ears. This helps them locate insects or other animals they can eat. It also helps them find other animals that might hurt them. Isn t that cool? 1. What is this story mainly about? Underline the words in the story that tell you what it is about. 2.
