TEAM CD2 MAR - JUNE 09 3RD REVISE 10/12/08 13:50 Page 2 TEAM MARCH / APRIL 2009 TRACK 1: Introductions BEN: Welcome to Team Radio. I m Ben. JENNY: And I m Jenny. This month s TEAM is about image and looks! We have a special report on photos in fashion magazines. BEN: Then we re asking: Should Scotland be independent? One Scottish teenager tells us what he thinks. JENNY: We ll also be visiting a shopping centre in Bristol and asking teen shoppers if they know where their new clothes come from. BEN: And finally, we ve got a wildlife photographer in the studio. She s talking about one of the world s favourite and most endangered animals, the tiger. TRACK 2: Special Report JENNY: In TEAM this month, we re talking about image. BEN: Do you read fashion magazines, Jenny? JENNY: All the time! I love looking at the pictures. BEN: That s just it, Jenny. Magazines are full of photographs photographs of perfect people. They have perfect skin and perfect white teeth. But do they look like that in real life? JENNY: The truth is, they don t! I know that many magazines change the pictures! This makes the people look perfect. And when we see these photos, it can make us feel bad about our own looks. BEN: To show this, TEAM did an experiment. We took one teenager - her name is Lizzy - and we photographed her in the office. Then, we got our TEAM designer, Eddie, to change the photo. This is called retouching. Take a look at pages 6 and 7. JENNY: We showed Lizzy her Before and After photos. We ve got her on the TEAM telephone now. Let s hear what she thinks! JENNY: Hi, Lizzy, how are you? LIZZY: Hi, I m fine. 2

TEAM CD2 MAR - JUNE 09 3RD REVISE 10/12/08 13:50 Page 3 JENNY: Great. Thanks so much for taking part in our experiment today. LIZZY: That s fine. JENNY: You ve seen your Before and After photos. What do you think of them? LIZZY: I thought it was very interesting actually. That... um... just one kind of piece of software can change a photo so drastically. JENNY: So which do you prefer? LIZZY: Erm... I think I definitely prefer the first photo. The second photo looks a little bit too fake for me. JENNY: Really? What s been changed in the photographs? LIZZY: Erm... well, I noticed that... erm... my skin s been changed... erm... my hair... my hair colour s been changed. They changed my clothes. And they put more make-up on as well. JENNY: So is it a bit strange seeing yourself retouched? LIZZY: Yes, it s kind of like a... a... different version of me. It s quite strange to see. JENNY: Have you shown the photographs to anyone else? LIZZY: Yeah, they re all really shocked by it actually. JENNY: Yeah? LIZZY: It s quite funny. JENNY: Sure. So will this change the way you feel when you look at perfect people in magazines? LIZZY: Definitely. I mean I knew that... um... retouching happens obviously... in the... with magazines... but I never realised it was to such an extent. JENNY: Well, that s great. Thanks very much for taking part, Lizzy. LIZZY: That s all right. Thank you. TRACK 3: Taking Sides BEN: Here s a question for you: Which four countries make up the United Kingdom? JENNY: And the answer is: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. BEN: That s true - for now. But lots of people in Scotland want to break away from the United Kingdom. JENNY: There were lots of wars between Scotland and England in the past. 3

TEAM CD2 MAR - JUNE 09 3RD REVISE 10/12/08 13:50 Page 4 BEN: But all that stopped in Since then, England and Scotland have had one government. JENNY: Today Scotland has its own parliament, but the UK Parliament in London still decides on big issues, like tax and war. BEN: But don t forget that Prime Minister Gordon Brown is Scottish! JENNY: What do the Scottish people think? BEN: In a survey in 2008 only 25% of adults were in favour. JENNY: So the majority of Scottish adults don t want independence? BEN: That s right. But Scottish teenagers have other ideas. JENNY: Really? What do they think? BEN: Well, we did our own mini survey of Scottish teens at one Scottish school. Fifty-seven per cent voted in favour of independence and 43% voted against. JENNY: Interesting! So young Scottish people do want to be independent! BEN: We interviewed a Scottish teenager. His name is Robert Thompson and he lives in Glasgow. He came into a Glasgow radio studio and spoke to Jan. JAN: Hi, Robert. Tell us about yourself. ROBERT: Hi, Jan. I m Robert Thompson, I m 18 and I m from Scotland. I m studying engineering at Glasgow University. JAN: The majority of Scottish teenagers want independence. Why do you think that is? ROBERT: Because most young Scots have a We-hate-the-English attitude. JAN: And what do you think? ROBERT: I think independence is a terrible idea. Scotland doesn t have the power or the income to survive alone. JAN: What about oil? Isn t there a lot of oil in the North Sea? That s Scottish. ROBERT: Yes, we ve got oil. But it won t last forever. And when the oil runs out, our only income is tourism. That s not enough to support us. I think it would be a very dangerous adventure. JAN: Thanks for telling us your views, Robert. 4

TEAM CD2 MAR - JUNE 09 3RD REVISE 10/12/08 13:50 Page 5 TRACK 4: Eye Witness JENNY: The British love shopping - in particular clothes shopping. A lot of our high street clothes are made in India. But are you aware of the conditions they are made in? BEN: Some of these cheap clothes are made in factories in Bangladesh and India. We might think, Great! Jobs for them and cheap clothes for us! But these people work in bad conditions. Some Indian workers are paid only 5 pence an hour in euros, that s about 6 cents and they have to work 80 hours a week. Most Europeans work 35 to 40 hours a week! JENNY: Would this stop you buying cheap fashion? Team reporter Jodie went to Cabots Circus, a big new shopping centre in Bristol, to find out. JODIE: Hi, I m here in Bristol. It s Saturday afternoon and the shops are packed. I can see H&M, New Look and Primark. These shops sell fashionable clothes and they are cheap very cheap. Let s talk to some teen shoppers. Hi, what s your name? LOUISE: I m Louise. JODIE: Louise, are you hoping to buy lots of cheap clothes this afternoon? LOUISE: I used to buy cheap clothes, but then I saw this TV programme about factories in India. JODIE: Did it change your opinion of cheap clothes? LOUISE: Yes, it did! It made me feel ashamed. Now, I only buy one or two new things a month. JODIE: Thanks, and now we ve got Jade. What about you? Do you like cheap fashion, Jade? JADE: I like to buy a new top on Saturdays, wear it once and then I buy something new the next week. What s wrong with that? JODIE: Don t you feel bad about where these people work? JADE: No, if I didn t buy so many clothes they wouldn t have a job. JODIE: OK, Jade, thanks... And what s your name? LAUREN: I m Lauren. JODIE: What do you think about cheap clothes? LAUREN: I think we re all a bit greedy, really. We don t need new clothes all the time. JODIE: Thanks, Lauren. Ah, a boy! Excuse me, what s your name? DEAN: Dean. 5

TEAM CD2 MAR - JUNE 09 3RD REVISE 10/12/08 13:50 Page 6 JODIE: Hi, Dean. Do you ever think about where all these cheap clothes are made? DEAN: No, not really. I must admit I do buy cheap clothes. Most stuff is too expensive for me, so, yeah, jeans for 5 in Primark, that s great! JODIE: And your friend here. What s your name? MARTHA: I m Martha. JODIE: Where do you buy your clothes, Martha? MARTHA: I buy my clothes in charity shops. I like old, vintage clothes they re cool! I cut them up and sew things on. So I have my own personal style. JODIE: That s great, Martha! Good advice for all of us in the credit crunch! That s all from Bristol. Back to the studio. TRACK 5: The Ad BEN: The advert in this issue of TEAM is about tigers. It s an advert by the World Wildlife Fund. They re trying to save tigers from extinction. Wildlife photographer, Kelly Mason, has been to India. She s talking to us about tigers. Hi, Kelly. You ve taken some amazing photos of tigers in the wild. You re worried about tigers, aren t you? KELLY: Yes, Ben, I want to make people aware of the problems that tigers are facing. BEN: How many tigers are there in the wild, Kelly? KELLY: The World Wildlife Fund thinks that there are only 4,500 tigers left. BEN: Only 4,500! That doesn t sound like many. KELLY: You re right it isn t! There used to be more than one hundred thousand. BEN: And where do they live? KELLY: Most of them live in India. There are some in Russia and a few left in China. BEN: Why are they in trouble? KELLY: Well, there are two main reasons. Their bones and other body parts are used in Chinese medicine. Lots of people in America and Asia buy these medicines. So people kill tigers and sell them. BEN: And the other reason? KELLY: Well, tigers live in forests and we re cutting down the forests, so there s nowhere for the tigers to go. 6

TEAM CD2 MAR - JUNE 09 3RD REVISE 10/12/08 13:50 Page 7 BEN: Is there any good news for tigers? KELLY: Yes, people are buying forest land to protect the tigers. BEN: Thanks for talking to us, Kelly. Good luck with the campaign. For more information on the World Wildlife Fund, go to JENNY: Thanks, Ben. And that s it from TEAM radio for this time. Thanks for listening. TRACK 6: Introductions BEN: Welcome to TEAM Radio. I m Ben... JENNY:... and I m Jenny. BEN: We ve got lots on the show today. JENNY: Yes! We re talking about a new UN report. It says we should all eat less meat. BEN: We ll be talking to our sports reporter about Britain s No 1 tennis player. JENNY: And as it s getting closer to exam time, our TEAM phone-in is about exam stress. How can you survive it? Text, or call with your top tips. BEN: And finally it s nearly summer and we re looking forward to some sun. But is there really a safe way to get a tan? But first, here s Jenny with a new report about meat. TRACK 7: Taking Sides JENNY: How often do you eat meat, Ben? BEN: I eat meat about four or five times a week. JENNY: Would you be happy to eat meat less often say, two or three times a week? BEN: Hm, I love steaks and sausages. But if there was a good reason, I would eat meat less often. JENNY: Well, there is! A new report from the United Nations says: If everyone gave up meat for just one day a week, it would slow down global warming. BEN: What? So if I didn t eat sausages or bacon, it would help the environment? JENNY: That s it! In the UK, for example, half of our food carbon emissions are caused by meat and dairy farming. So if we produced less meat, our carbon emissions would be lower. 7

TEAM CD2 MAR - JUNE 09 3RD REVISE 10/12/08 13:50 Page 8 BEN: We ve got four teens in the studio with us today. Let s find out their opinions. TEENS: Hi. BEN: First, are any of you vegetarians? TEENS: No! BEN: No, okay, then. Lee, you first. The United Nations wants us to eat less meat. Will you eat less meat? LEE: You re saying, if I eat one less hamburger a week... it will stop global warming? I don t think so! BEN: Jack? JACK: If everyone does it, of course it ll make a difference. BEN: And will you eat less meat, Jack? JACK: I only eat meat once or twice a week, maybe at the weekends. But I d be happy to stop eating meat altogether. BEN: How often do you eat meat, Amy? AMY: Most days. My parents are farmers so we have our own meat. Times are hard for us at the moment. I don t think I d be very popular at home if I suddenly went vegetarian. BEN: And, Karen? KAREN: We have quite a lot of meat. I think we could eat less, though. My mum does the shopping, but maybe I ll talk to her about it. BEN: So that s two Yeses to eating less meat and two Nos. Thanks for coming in guys. TEENS: Thanks. Bye! TRACK 8: Sport JENNY: Now sport! Andy Murray is Britain s Number 1 tennis player. But unlike other British sports stars, like Lewis Hamilton, David Beckham or swimmer Rebecca Adlington, he isn t very popular with fans. Why? Our sports reporter, Brett, is here in the studio. So why isn t Andy very popular? BRETT: First of all, Andy Murray is not just Britain s No 1 male tennis player he s Britain s only tennis player. And he s good. In fact, he s beaten all his three main rivals in the last 12 months - Nadal, Federer and Djokovic. 8

TEAM CD2 MAR - JUNE 09 3RD REVISE 10/12/08 13:50 Page 9 JENNY: Yes, I watched the match against Nadal at the US Open last year. That was amazing! So why don t we love him? BRETT: His problem is image. JENNY: Why? BRETT: Well, he can be a bit moody. He doesn t smile enough. And he doesn t seem to enjoy talking to the press after his matches. JENNY: Hm. Oh dear and in Britain you need the media and the newspapers on your side! BRETT: That s true. And then, there s that famous comment he made just before the last football World Cup. JENNY: What did he say? BRETT: Scotland weren t in the World Cup. And a reporter asked him, Who are you supporting, Andy? JENNY: I remember! He said, Anyone except England. BRETT: That s right. He said he was just joking. But lots of people took it seriously and they haven t forgotten. But I think if he won Wimbledon, we would take him to our hearts. JENNY: Can he win Wimbledon this year? BRETT: He ll definitely win Wimbledon sometime in his career. JENNY: Thanks, Brett. TRACK 9: TEAM Phone-In JENNY: Last summer, British teenagers got better exam results than ever. And in TEAM you can read some amazing stories about teens who got good results. BEN: Yes, one was Waheed Safi, a refugee from Afghanistan. JENNY: That s right. Waheed came to England with his family when he was 15. When he arrived, he couldn t speak a word of English. BEN: And last summer, only three years later, he got four A Levels at A grade and now he s going to Oxford University to study Engineering Science. JENNY: And with exams coming up again soon, we d like to know how you deal with exam stress. Phone, or text us with your top tips. Our first caller is Charlie from Manchester. Hi, Charlie. 9

TEAM CD2 MAR - JUNE 09 3RD REVISE 10/12/08 13:50 Page 10 CHARLIE [on phone]: Hi, Jenny. I always do my revision in the afternoon. It means I ve got the evenings free, so I can chill out and play computer games. JENNY: Here s a text from Vicky, in London. She says, Make sure your mum makes lots of chocolate brownies. I always feel less stressed after a chocolate brownie. BEN: And an from Emily, also in London. Don t leave it till the last minute. If you haven t started revising for your summer exams yet, you are crazy! JENNY: Mm, that s good advice. If you revise all through the year, you won t get so stressed when it s exam time. BEN: Now, Hakeemah is on the line. HAKEEMAH [on phone]: Hi, Ben. My suggestion is to revise with your mates. BEN: That sounds fun. But do you actually get any work done? HAKEEMAH [on phone]: I think we get more done. We have a laugh but then we test each other and make each other work. JENNY: That sounds a great idea, as long as you re all really motivated! BEN: And that s all we have time for. Thanks for all your ideas and good luck in your exams! TRACK 10: The Ad JENNY: It s nearly summer and I m looking forward to wearing my summer clothes again. But, like many teens, I m not looking forward to showing my pale skin. So what do I do if I want a quick tan? This month s advert in TEAM is about using sunbeds. Are they safe? Health expert Danielle Taylor is in the studio with us. Danielle, welcome to TEAM radio. Are sunbeds safe? DANIELLE: Hi, Jenny. No, I m afraid sunbeds are not safe. JENNY: Why? DANIELLE: Sunbeds give out UV (Ultra Violet) rays just like the sun, and it s those UV rays that damage our skin. JENNY: What do UV rays do? DANIELLE: It s the UV rays that give you a tan. But they also cause sunburn and even skin cancer. JENNY: There s a tanning salon near the studio. I often see schoolgirls popping in there on their way home from school. Is it true that sunbeds are OK when you re young? 10

TEAM CD2 MAR - JUNE 09 3RD REVISE 10/12/08 13:50 Page 11 DANIELLE: No, it isn t. UV damages young skin as well as old skin. You can t always see the damage, but it s still happening. Here s a scary statistic: If you use a sunbed before you re 35, you re 75% more likely to develop skin cancer. JENNY: Woah. That s shocking! Seventy-five per cent! I read that we need Vitamin D to stay healthy. I know Vitamin D comes from sunlight. Can we get that from a sunbed? DANIELLE: No, we don t need to. Fifteen minutes of sunlight a day gives us enough Vitamin D. And our bodies are designed to store it over the winter, when there s not as much sun. JENNY: So if I m feeling pale, what s the safest thing to do? DANIELLE: Try a fake tan! The only safe place to get a tan is out of a bottle. Or stay pale! JENNY: Thanks, Danielle. BEN: And that s it for today s show. Bye, and thanks for listening. JENNY: Bye. TEAM CD Issues 4-5. MARY GLASGOW MAGAZINES. All rights reserved.
