1 The Future Kid s School Grade VII going to VIII Summer Holiday Home Work Year HELLO PARENTS, Holiday home works and projects are being given to support children minimally with academics and more emphasis is being put on project. Request you support them and make sure they learn from these experiences. Some may not be able to articulate heir experience but experience is certainly going to help them know themselves and the others around. Project - 1 I Make Sell Save Contribute Dear Parents, We want the children to understand how money is earned. The money they earn and go into an account (obviously joint) if possible. Lemonade Ice fresh fruit Lollies Sandwiches Photo Frames Bookmark Friendship Bands Jewellery Box Gift Wrapping Paper/ Boxes Think of more ideas Confused?? The above are examples of things you can make and sell in your neighborhood. Note down your earnings; save it and use this amount to contribute towards your family s expenses. Project - 2 Use any notebook as a rough notebook. Make a cover for it, you can also make a reusable cover if you wish. This book you can use in the coming academic year for your new class. Decorate the cover according to your taste. Project - 3 Chores at home : Talk to your parents. Choose any one chore which your house help does. Do that for two weeks. Negotiate with your parents and fix a reasonable amount (not exceeding Rs.1000) which you will earn and then use this amount to contribute towards your family s expenses. Project - 4 Make a pencil pouch (you may take help if you want) Use your imagination you can use old cloth, boxes, plastic bottles etc. You can use these pencil pouch for your new class.

ENGLISH THE TEACHER Read the poem and answer the questions that follow: Thirty years ago she began teaching Young children in their threes and fours: She didn t know much about children at first, But over time learned more and more. BITING NAILS Read the passage and answer the questions that follow: Have you ever wondered why children bite their nails so often? The child actually suffers from a habit disorder, putting him at a greater risk of digestive tract diseases like intestinal worm infections. Biting nails leads to transportation of germs and bacteria that are buried under the surface of the nail into the mouth. Once the bacteria enter the stomach, they multiply causing various gastro intestinal diseases. Habitual nail biting can lead to the protruding of the child s front teeth, which results in caries, a common oral disease. But a compulsive nail biter also bites the surrounding skin and cuticle, breaking the skin and transferring the microbial and viral infections from the mouth on to the fingers. Long term nail biting can also interfere with normal nail growth and cause deformed nails. According to a survey, people of all ages bite their nails. Children below the age of fifteen bite their nails at one time or another. Nail- biting is most common among teens in their puberty and is a common stress relieving habit. Young adults also bite their nails. But most of them stop on their own. A survey has shown that one in five Indians is a victim of intestinal worm infection caused by nail biting. The nail is a cartilage and eating it does not cause a serious threat as it is not a foreign body.the problem lies with the bacteria that live on the nail bed. In children it is mostly dirt which gets deposited due to improper hygiene. The bacteria go back into the body and multiply resulting in worms.

5 Parents return to doctors complaining that the de- worming medicines are not effective.but it is actually constant nail biting which results in fresh infection. A reputed clinical child psychologist has said nail biting is a very common habit and is a result of depression, isolation, stress and anxiety. Most people bite nails while reading, watching television or talking on the phone. A better cure for it is behavioural therapy and self control, rather than putting neem paste bandages and paper on nails. Children bite their nails when they are having problems at school or with friends. As it does not bother others, it is not considered a mental disorder. Some self management strategies are reward and punishment and keeping hands busy while studying, playing or watching television. Even schools have started appointing counselors to address this problem. Parents have been asked to teach children ways to cope with the habit rather than punishing them by putting chilly powder and paste on their nails. 1. Complete the following: a. At the very beginning of the seventeenth century it underwent a siege of three weeks and lost 13,000 people, the casualties of war proper being assisted by famine and disease. Count Dracula had directed me to go to the Golden Krone Hotel,Which I found to my great delight, to be thoroughly old fashioned, for course I wanted to see all I could of the ways of the country. I was evidently expected, for when I got near the door I faced a cheery- looking elderly woman in the usual peasant dress white undergarment with a long double apron, front and back, of coloured stuff fitting almost too tight. 6 Dracula. 4 th May I found that my landlord had got a letter from the count, directing him to secure the best place on the coach for me ; but on making inquiries as to details he seemed somewhat reticent, and pretended that he could not understand my German. This could not be true, because up to then he had understood it perfectly; at least, he answered my questions exactly as if he did. I know that, but do you know what day it is? On my saying that I did not understand, she went on: It is the eve of St. George s Day. Do you not know that tonight, when the clock strikes midnight,all the evil things in the world will have full sway? Do you know where you are going, and what you are going to? She was in such evident distress that I tried to comfort her, but without effect. Finally, she went down on her knees and implored me not to go; at least to wait a day or two before starting. Pollution is synonymous with poisoning and if not eradicated, may mean the ultimate destruction of all living creatures and vegetation on earth. Pollution may be classified into four categories and they are air pollution, sea Pollution, noise Pollution and land Pollution. Every living organism requires life preserving oxygen for its existence and growth. Can we imagine the extent of damage and destruction if this precious life giving oxygen is polluted and transformed into life destroying carbondioxide. This is what is happening in highly industrialized and advanced cities. The exhaust fumes from all types of motorized vehicles, the smoke and chemical fumes from factories and industries and even smoking in crowded places produce carbondioxide. Land pollution can be prevented if people are more social minded. It is a common sight to see house-wives indiscriminately dumping house hold refuse in the back lanes; factories emptying their chemical wastes into gutters and vacant yards and pedestrians blowing their noses or spitting at random. Accumulation of refuse and chemical wastes poisons the land, kills vegetation and contaminates the very food we eat. Rubbish heaps attract flies and rats and these

8 two pests are noted for spreading killer diseases like cholera, Pollution dysentery and plague. Many have been prosecuted for indiscriminately dumping refuse but the nuisance does not seem to abate. Perhaps the courts are treating the culprits leniently by letting them off with small fines. Sea pollution is caused mainly by oil slick from tankers which meet with accident while entering or leaving a port. Large area of the sea are covered with this oil slick that can kill all marine life, which forms a part of our food chain. Most vessels empty their refuse and wastes in the seas, which are ultimately washed ashore, making mess of the beaches. Noise pollution is something new. With the advancement of science, bigger and more powerful machines are being produced to cope with the increased construction programmes. When this powerful machinery operates, the deafening and thumping noise of it can cause anyone nervous breakdown. Other noise such as the roar of jet planes, music being played at the highest volume can also cause uneasiness and inconvenience. All these types of pollution can be prevented if everyone realizes the dangers to which we are exposed. Government should promulgate new legislation to impose a very heavy fine and imprisonment for persistent offenders. (promulgate-put into effect ;prosecuted bring a legal case against ) 1. A clothing style may start as a fashion, but its use becomes a custom if it is handed down from generation to generation. Today, wearing long trousers is a custom for men in most countries. But changes in color and shape of trousers are taken place through the years. A fashion that quickly comes and goes is called a fad. The majority of people do not accept fads. Some people may become involved in faddish behavior because fads gets a lot of publicity. Today, people follow fashion for many reasons. For example, they want others to think that they belong to a special class of society. New fashion may be adopted immediately buy well known people, including athletes, film stars and political figures. Then, other people follow these fashions so that they can also look important. Some people think that fashionable clothes and surroundings raise their status in life. The dead of Princess Diana was a severe blow to the high fashion world, where her clothes were daily news. People follow fashions to make themselves more attractive. Standards of fashion change through the years, and people decorate themselves according to the changing standards.
