4 (3) Grammar Second Conditional We use second conditional to talk about situations or actions in the present which are imaginary or impossible. The condition is not very likely happens. Affirmative and Negative: conditional clause main clause If + subject+ simple past verb+... subject + would+ inf. verb +... If + subject+(didn't + inf. verb)+... subject + would not+ inf. verb +..., Examples: (1) If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house. 5 Remember When you negate an ordinary simple past verb you use (didn't) Change the verb after (didn't) to the BASE form. When you negate a simple past verb of "be" you use (be+not) Always remember that you DO NOT use "did" with the verb "be" in the simple past.
