2 READING GUIDE To compare and contrast means to tell how or more things are alike and different. Clue words such as like and as show similarities. Clue words such as however and instead show differences. I.COMPARE AND CONTRAST. Read the following passage, and answer the questions below. Some people think dolphins are large fish. However, dolphins, like whales and humans, are mammals. They are warm-blooded, breathe air, and do not lay eggs. Instead, they give birth. All fish, including sharks, are cold-blooded, breathe with gills underwater, and lay eggs. Dolphins take in air at the water s surface through a blowhole, which closes when the dolphin is under water. Unlike humans, dolphins can hold their breath for 10 to 30 minutes. Dolphins have strong jaws and teeth, like sharks and other some fish. But not all the fish species have teeth. 1. What clue word in the passage suggest that mammals are different from fish? 2. A character is a person or an animal that takes part in the event of a story. Plot is what happens in the story. One summer, three men came to Reggie s island village in the Bahamas. They said they were studying animals at a college in Europe. Reggie and the other villagers became suspicious when they noticed the visitors had no official papers from their college. The villagers wanted to trust the visitors, but they also wanted to protect their wildlife, so they contacted the police. When the three men tried to leave the island, their luggage was searched at the airport. Five hundred live lizards were hidden in their luggage! The men were arrested, the lizards were freed, and Reggie and the villagers were glad they had solved a crime. 1.Who are the characters in the story? 2. In this story, what is the problem? 3

5 III. SEQUENCE. Read the following passage. Then complete the time line below. Sequence is the order in which events happen in a selection. Clue words such as fistr, next and last tell the sequence of an event. People get caught outside in thunderstorms all the time. But if you pay attention to the messages nature sends out, you have a better chance at staying dry. You just have to know the code. The first thing that happens before many thunderstorms is the air grows very still. The strange calm may last for over an hour. Later, you notice the leaves on some of the trees have turned upside down, and even though the branches aren t moving, the leaves start rustling. Meanwhile, not a cloud is in sight. Then, birds all seem to begin flying swiftly home to their nests. Then, a long, steady wind comes out of nowhere. You look up and notice towering thunderheads, tall columns o storm clouds, gathering in the sky. They are moving faster than you imagined they could. All of a sudden the sky is dark. Sheets of pounding rain drench the earth. But you re safely inside, right? You know nature s secret code. 5
