[Fade Music Up and Out] This week s Tip is a super tip, literally. Every Friday night is date night at my house.

3 3 My wife and I usually eat dinner together and sometimes we watch our favorite shows together -- and by our favorite shows, I mean her favorite shows. We have been watching Grey s Anatomy since the very beginning, so that show has become a staple in our relationship. A few weeks ago we were catching up on old episodes and there was a scene that was eerily familiar to me. Two doctors were preparing for surgery and in order to get themselves pumped up, they did the Superhero Stance. Imagine how Superman stands in every iconic picture and you know what this looks like. You stand tall, widen your stance, puff up your chest, make a fist with both of your hands, put your firsts on your hips with elbows bent, and then look up with your chin pointing to the sky. Yes, you re going to look ridiculous, but it s amazingly powerful. I was a waiter during college and in the middle of a busy night I would take quick breaks in the back room. Unknowingly to me, I would strike a pose that was very similar to the Super Hero Pose. My manager started calling me Super Man and thought it was really funny.

4 4 I simply found it to be the best way to keep my energy and spirits up as I ran around the restaurant. In the episode of Grey s Anatomy, one of the doctors claimed that there was a study that proved this Superhero Stance was effective. This piqued my interest and I looked it up. As it turns out, there are many studies that have examined open positions versus closed positions. Open positions are like the superhero stance in that you physically take up a lot of space and closed positions take up very little space. One study showed that if you held an open position, which is very similar to the Superhero Stance, for at least 2 minutes, your testosterone (or power hormone) levels would increase, your cortisol (or stress hormone) levels would decrease, and you would be more likely to take bold action and assume more risk. In other words, it gave you more confidence and you would act accordingly. That s powerful stuff. So, if you are preparing for a big speech, feeling nervous about an upcoming project, or you simply want to boost your morale today, try standing in the Superhero Stance for at least 2 minutes and see what happens.

5 5 I have been standing with a tall posture for most of my life and I always find that it makes me feel more powerful. On a related note, I also walk quickly wherever I go, which also makes me feel powerful and productive. I found a study that seems to predict that people who walk faster also live longer. Crazy and amazing. [World Music Interlude] My guest today is a world-famous ultra-endurance athlete who has completed some of the world s toughest Ironman Triathlons. He is also the author of, Finding Ultra, a phenomenal book that highlights many of his incredible adventures. I interviewed him in episode #21 of this podcast and we dove into that book, so don t forget to go back and listen to that conversation. Today we will be discussing his new book, The Plantpower Way, which is a cook-book for busy families who want to eat healthier and adopt more powerful plants into their diet.

7 7 This might seem unnecessary, but people who exercise more also tend to eat healthier. Likewise, people who don t workout tend to ignore the healthy choices.
