4 PLOT DIAGRAM and HIGHLIGHTS Know the plot diagram for a tragedy and how each act relates. Paris wants to marry Juliet, but Lord Capulet has asked him to wait because she is only 13. Paris agrees. The Capulets are having a party that night and Romeo happens to find out about it, and he and his friends decide to go after they see Rosaline s name on the guest list. Romeo has a bad feeling that some event will take place at the party that will eventually lead to his death. Romeo and Juliet meet at the party, instantly fall in love, and realize that they should be enemies. Act II: Romeo overhears Juliet talking about how much she loves him. He lets her know he is there. The profess their love for each other, and Juliet tells him that if he truly loves her, he will marry her. They make a decision to marry the next day. Romeo speaks to Friar Laurence to set up their wedding. Friar thinks that he is moving too quickly but decides to marry the kids because it will end the fighting between the two families. Juliet sends Nurse to meet Romeo to find out the plans for their wedding. Juliet tells her parents she is going to see the Friar for confession, and she is actually going to be married. While all of this is happening, Tybalt sends a letter challenging Romeo to a duel. Romeo and Juliet are married. Act III: Romeo comes across Mercutio and Tybalt arguing, and then Mercutio and Tybalt fight. Tybalt originally wants to fight Romeo, but Romeo realizes that he is now related (by marriage) to Tybalt and refuses to fight. Mercutio and Tybalt begin to fight. Romeo steps in to try to break it up and it leads to Mercutio being accidentally injured by Tybalt. Mercutio dies. In a rage, Romeo fights and kills Tybalt. Realizing what he has done, he runs off to hide in Friar Laurence s cell. The prince hears of the fight, and determines Romeo was only avenging Mercutio s death, but still believes he must be punished. The prince banishes Romeo from Verona. Romeo is horribly upset, and throws a tantrum. Friar tells him to man up, and go see Juliet for their wedding night before he leaves Verona. Romeo sneaks into Juliet s bedroom that night, and they have their wedding night. He then leaves for Mantua in the morning. Juliet is upset that she has lost both her cousin and her husband. Act IV: In order to cheer Juliet up, Lord Capulet decides that she will be married to Paris by the end of the week. Juliet freaks out and refuses to marry Paris. Lord Capulet threatens to disown her if she does not marry Paris. Juliet goes to Nurse for advice because Nurse knows about Romeo. Nurse tells her that Romeo is a good as dead and that she should marry Paris. This causes a rift between JUliet and the Nurse. Juliet no

5 longer trusts the nurse. Juliet runs to Friar Laurence to see if he can help. He gives Juliet a potion that will make her sleep and appear dead for 24 hours. The night before her wedding to Paris she is to take the potion. Thinking she is dead, they will put her in the tomb with Tybalt. Friar will get news to Romeo and before she wakes up, both Romeo and Friar Laurence will be waiting for her in the tomb. She and Romeo will then run off to Mantua and live happily ever after. Juliet feels confident this plan will work, so she tells her dad that she will marry Paris. Lord Capulet is so excited that he decides to move the wedding up a day. This throws a kink into the Friar s plan. Juliet now must take the potion a day early. Meanwhile, Father Laurence sends a letter to Romeo by way of another Friar. The night before the wedding, Juliet has doubts the the potion will not work, or that she will wake up too soon and nobody will be there to help her escape from the tomb. She is afraid ghosts might get her, or that she go crazy from breathing in the fumes of decaying flesh. She also fears the Friar might be trying to poison her so he can avoid being in trouble for the sin of having Juliet being married to 2 people at the same time. She decides that if the potion does not work, she will stab herself with a dagger. She drinks the potion and it works. Nurse finds her dead the next morning. Paris grieves for Juliet; he really loved her. Act V: Romeo s servant, Balthasar, hears about Juliet s death and rides to Mantua to let him know. Balthasar beat the letter from Friar Laurence because the other Friar got quarantined in a house due to the plague. He was visiting some sick members of his congregation and then could not leave. Therefore, Romeo does not have any idea about the plan to fake Juliet s death. Romeo buys poison from a poor apothecary and sneaks back into Verona. He goes to Juliet s tomb only to find Paris there. Paris thinks that Romeo is there to vandalize Juliet s grave. The two fight and Romeo kills Paris. He breaks into the tomb and sees Juliet there. He goes to her, and notices that her cheeks are still pink, and that her body is still warm. Being an idiot, Romeo doesn t stop to add the signs up. He kisses her one last time, and drinks the poison and dies instantly. Minutes later, Juliet wakes up. Friar Laurence is there, and sees Romeo s body. He tries to escort Juliet out of the tomb, but she sees Romeo and refuses to leave. Friar starts to freak out when he hears guards approaching the tomb, and leaves Juliet there while he goes back to his cell. Juliet kisses Romeo hoping there is still poison on his lips, and when that doesn t work she stabs herself with his dagger and dies. The bodies of Paris, Romeo and Juliet are found. The Friar finally confesses everything from the secret marriage to the plan to fake Juliet s death, and accepts responsibility for the deaths of the young lovers. In the end, Lord Capulet and Lord Montague realize their foolish fight has cost them their most prized possessions and agree to stop. They also agree to build a monument for their children.
