1 Smart People by Lydia R. Diamond 13 ACT 1 SCENE 3 Light rises on Valerie sitting on a hospital gurney. She holds a bloody towel to her head she wears a linen rehearsal corset and petticoat, also covered with blood. She sits. The clock ticks. She fumes. Finally: I m sorry I kept you waiting Yeah uh huh. They didn t clean this up? No. No they didn t. Waiting room was empty, and still there I sat, bleeding all over myself for hours A nurse didn t No! No one did anything. I can tell you re angry Yes Yeah Yes I am, very yes. I ve got a hole in my face it s bleeding. That s a problem this is a lot of blood there s a lot of blood here and this is my face my only way out of a great deal of debt hinges on my face not being permanently jacked up It s fine hold on. Jackson exits and enters quickly w/ a cart. He pulls pillows out from below (cont) A nurse should have taken care of this. Can you lean back please. (propping pillows behind her ) There. (Jackson cleans the wound.) Will I get to see a doctor?

It happens (annoyed because, it happens ) You don t have on a name-tag or a white coat or anything.(beat) Will it need stitches? Yes. How many? It matters? It s my face But the number? Will it scar? I don t know. The cab driver said five. Five what? Stitches. Oh, well, the cab driver should know.
