by Rebecca Wimmer What A show called The Crazy Truth is the setting in this interactive skit, where Professor Imani and his sidekick, Zaney, use their celebration machine to help audiences understand why we celebrate what Jesus did on the cross. Note: This is Day 5, if you are using The Crazy Truth series. Themes: Easter, Resurrection, Hope, Belief Who Professor Imani Doctor Doubt Zaney Jesus Disciple Mary Magdalene Announcer Sign Holder When Wear (Props) Present day laboratory and Biblical times Professor Imani has crazy hair, colorful clothes and a white lab coat. Zaney has zany hair and is dressed in a white painter s suit with science goggles. Dr. Doubt is dressed in nice pants, white button down, red black or neutral tie and is clean cut and also in a lab coat. Your Sign Holder can be wearing similar attire to Imani and Zaney or be dressed like your audience. Bible people can be dressed in period dress. *See the end for a complete list of props and set. 2 Theme music/noises play Announcer: Weeeeeelcome everyone to our show The Crazy Truth! Cheer Sign; Audience cheers! Announcer: And now he s the teacher of fantastic factuals, the instructor of illustrious illustrations, the educator of Einsteinian elocutions, the one, the only, Professor Imani! Imani Sign; Audience chants: Audience: Imani! Imani! Imani! Imani! A long pause. Zaney sort of stumbles on looking for Imani. (looking all around, asking the audience at times) Now where could he be? I wonder where Professor Imani has gone to. Do you know where he is? I don t see him anywhere! Hmmm. Imani: (suddenly entering from the inside of the empty Celebration Machine) Ta da! (startled) Ahhh! Imani: Well hello there everyone! Professor Imani here. Bet you weren t expecting me to appear from inside my latest invention the Celebration Machine! The Celebration Machine? It doesn t look like much. Still have a lot to do on it to get it working? Imani: Actually, no. This baby is ready to be fired up and then we can celebrate! Doubt: What exactly are we celebrating? Dr. Doubt, Get Out! Sign; Audience shouts: Audience: Doctor Doubt, get out! Doubt: (calming the audience) Now wait a second, hold on here. I m just as curious as you are! I mean, look at this thing. Really? What do you really think you are going to be able to accomplish with this hunk of junk? Imani: Looks, can be deceiving. Things aren t always as bad as they may seem. Yeah, just watch this! 2

Zaney runs to the machine and turns it on. Sputtering and churning noises like an engine that won t quite start. Imani: (trying to stop her) Zaney! Wait! It s not quite ready to! Doubt: Imani: Doubt: (confused) What happened? Nothing happened. That s what happened. Just as I thought. Nice try, Professor, but this invention is as bad as it looks. (thinking) Y know, I can t help but think about another story from the Bible. (clapping gleefully) Story time! Story time! Oh no. (clapping and skipping gleefully around Doubt) Story time! Story time! La la la la story time! Doubt: Oh please. BIBLE SCENE The Cross Mary and Disciple enter sad and dejected. Disciple: I can t believe this. How could this happen? We believed in him. And now. Now he s gone. Mary: (patting his shoulder) We have to have faith. This isn t the end. This can t be the end. Disciple: What else could it be?! You saw him! They arrested Jesus. They made him carry his cross to that awful place and then they crucified him. He did nothing wrong and now now he s gone. I can t believe he died. Mary: God knows what we need. God is very powerful. Disciple: It s hard to have faith when so many bad things have happened. Mary: (preparing to leave, she puts on her bag) I m going to the tomb. I ll see you when I get back. Mary moves toward the tomb. 3

Mary: (shocked that the tomb is open and empty. She is immediately saddened because she thinks someone has taken Jesus body) They have taken him! They have taken my Lord! (Shouting to Disciple) Come quickly! He s gone! He s not here! Enter Disciple. Disciple: (discovering the tomb empty) It s empty. He s not there! I have to I have to tell everyone! Mary falls to her knees weeping. Enter Jesus he looks the same, but his costuming has changed a bit to signify the change. Jesus: Woman, why are you crying? Mary: (barely looking up, still crying) Please, sir if you have put him somewhere, please tell me. Tell me so I can go get him. Jesus: (smiling) Mary. (Pause) Mary. Mary: (she looks up, stands and then recognizes him) Jesus! We saw you on the cross. We saw you die. It was so hard to have faith. But, I knew I knew God was more powerful than death. And now you re here! You re here and you re alive! Jesus: Yes. Now go. Go and tell everyone the good news. Exit Jesus quietly while Disciple enters from another way. Mary: (running toward Disciple grabbing him by the shoulders) I have seen Jesus! I have seen the Lord! He is alive! He s not dead. He s really really alive! Disciple: He s alive?! We have to go and tell everyone! We have to celebrate! Mary and Disciple exit through crowd speaking to them as they go saying, He is alive! Jesus is here! I have seen the Lord! LAB SCENE Doubt: Good story. I have to give it to you. Jesus dying on a cross and then coming back to life is one amazing miracle. And it s an amazing reason to celebrate. It s just too bad that your little Celebration Machine isn t working. Imani: Like I said, even when all seems lost, there s still hope. The resurrection of Jesus reminds me of that. Whattya think of that kids? 4

That s Crazy sign; Audience shouts: Audience: That s Crazy! Imani: That s Christ! The Crazy Truth is, kids, God sent Jesus for us to know His love and learn how to love others. Jesus died on a cross. Imani: But even though Jesus died, God is waaaaay too powerful to let something like death keep him down! And three days after Jesus died he was alive again! I would say that s a reason to celebrate! Zaney, I think it s time now. Let s kick this celebration into high gear! You got it! Zaney moves to the Celebration Machine. Imani: Count down with us! Starting with 10! All: ! Balloons start to flow out of the Celebration Machine and all around the room. Music Celebrate comes on. Doubt: Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Doubt exits. Imani: Well, that s our show, kids! Until next time, thanks for helping us discover The Crazy Truth! Sign; Audience shouts: Audience: The Crazy Truth! Music up. Dance party. You can bring in Jesus to dance too and the entire cast. Maybe Doubt can finally loosen up a bit. Exit 5

HOW Split stage presentation where Imani s Lab is on one part of the stage and the other stage is for the Bible story. If possible, rehearse with your Sign Holder/Adults/Counselors/Teachers prior to the presentation the interactive audience lines. Also, none of your inventions need to actually do what they say. They just need to appear to do what they say. The idea is to have the invention be a part of the interactive aspect and in this case the machine goes a little wacky and sprays water on the audience. You can have Zaney and Imani standing behind the invention spraying water. Adults in the audience, counselors/teachers/etc. could be equipped prior to the presentation with small water squirters to squirt the audience when it s time. SET Spinny wheels Tubes Colors Gears Think of things that you could buy cheap and big at Home Depot/Lowes and paint and configure Neon colored cutout shapes of test tubes, gears, springs Hula hoops with a ball in the middle made to look like an atom/molecule Biblical costumes for Bible story scenes COSTUMES Imani White lab coat Crazy hospital pattern pants or other brightly colored pant Wacky tie/bow tie Button down brightly colored shirt (not red) Science goggles Possibly an einstein wig Zaney White painters coveralls Science goggles Pigtails with pipe cleaners sticking out of hair in curly springs Doubt Gray/white lab coat Black pants White collared shirt Red tie 6

Large signs for audience that read the following: CHEER! (or hands clapping may be better like the ones on Facebook icon) IMANI! Dr. Doubt, Get Out! (or a pic of the words Dr. Doubt with red circle and line over) That s Crazy! (or sign with just crazy on it or a swirly spinny crazy thing Choose words or symbols based on the age of your audience. PROPS Tech Needs Theme music Song celebrate Large signs for audience that read the following: CHEER! Contraption Get creative! They don t actually have to do what they say they do, they just have to have working parts that you can imitate that they do what they say they can do. It s not much to look at The Celebration Machine needs to be big enough to walk through/duck through and darkened from the back to conceal a hidden person and hidden balloons. Blow up balloons and put them in large opaque trash bags beforehand that cast members and volunteers will disperse into the crowd. A tomb, if you want one, if not just play the tomb is offstage somewhere. 7
