1 Shurley Grammar Level 6 *Note that we ALWAYS start classifying our sentences by looking for prepositions and labeling prepositional phrases FIRST. This is different than the order the book teaches, but I feel it makes classifying the rest of the sentence easier. **Note the NEW label POSSESSIVE NOUN ADECTIVE PNA and the new question after dividing the complete subject from the complete predicate: Is this sentence natural or inverted word order? Page 161 the Question & Answer Flow Ms. Kathy s Way (students should recite questions/answers aloud) SENTENCE 1: Did you sit on Dad s new hat yesterday? 1. Read the sentence. Did you sit on Dad s new hat yesterday? 2. Look for prepositions. on, preposition, P 3. on what? hat, object of the preposition, 4. What kind of hat? new, adjective, ADJ 5. WHOSE hat? Dad s, possessive noun adjective PNA 6. Parenthesis around on Dad s new hat 7. Read the sentence without the prepositional phrases. Did you sit yesterday? 8. Who/what did sit yesterday? you, subject pronoun, SP 9. What is being said about you? did, helping verb, HV; sit, verb, V (note: did sit is the verb phrase) 10. Did sit when? yesterday, adverb, ADV 11. Sentence Pattern: SN V / P1 check 12. Go to the end of the sentence. Question mark, question, interrogative, INT 13. Go to the verb sit and divide the complete subject from the complete predicate (draw the line between the subject you and the verb sit since the helping verb is in the beginning of the sentence) 14. Is this sentence in a natural or inverted word order? Inverted word order (because the helping verb comes in the beginning of the sentence) 15. Underline the complete subject once and the complete predicate twice. SN V / P1 Sentence 2: Did HV you SP / sit V (on P Dad s PNA new ADJ hat ) yesterday ADV?
