7 INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH Hook Significant quote from the short story. Explanation of Hook One or two sentences that tell the name of the story and the author as well as a short summary. Thesis + Road Map Tells the theme you have chosen to explore and includes a road map in the sentence.
8 INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH SAMPLE We will have no breakfast, said Emilio. Mama will not want to cook. Rosy did not answer him. Where is Pepe gone? he asked. Rosy looked around at him. She drew her knowledge from the quiet air. He has gone on a journey. He will never come back (7-8). This quote comes from John Steinbeck s 1938 short story Flight. Flight tells about a young boy s tireless, but unsuccessful quest to escape after he ends up killing another man. This essay will explore the hopelessness of the human condition, a theme that Steinbeck develops using three different techniques: setting, point of view, and conflict.

11 BODY PARAGRAPH 4-5 SENTENCES One Sentence should be COMPOUND or COMPLEX Introduce and define the literary device you are talking about. Select a quote or evidence from the story that reflects your theme. Connect your evidence to the theme that you have chosen to write about. End with a transition sentence that connects to the next paragraph.
12 BODY PARAGRAPH EXAMPLE COMPLEX SENTENCES IN BOLD One way in which Steinbeck develops a theme of the futility of man s existence is by emphasizing the setting or details about the landscape where the story unfolds. For example, throughout the story, he gives elaborate and poetic descriptions of the scenery while offering very little information about the characters: Behind the farm the stone mountains stood up against the sky. The farm buildings huddled like the clinging aphids on the mountain skirts, crouched low to the ground as though the wind might blow them into the sea (1). In this example from the beginning of the story, Steinbeck uses imagery to make the ocean and the mountains seem very powerful when compared with the vulnerable and smaller structures that the characters inhabit. By setting up this contrast, Steinbeck is foreshadowing that the humans will remain powerless and helpless in the face of nature s forces and elements. However, setting is not the only way that Steinbeck reflects his themes of hopelessness and desperation.
13 HOW TO MAKE A COMPOUND SENTENCE Pick two sentences from your paragraph that are next to and related to one another. Take the period off the first sentence. Add a semicolon (;) or add a comma + a FANBOY Write the second sentence after the FANBOY Add a period at the end of the second sentence.
14 HOW TO CONSTRUCT A COMPLEX SENTENCE Pick one sentence from your paragraph that has a verb or a noun that you can modify (add more details to). Remove the period from the end of the sentence. Add a subordinating conjunction (verbs) or a relative pronoun (nouns) to begin your dependent clause. If using a subordinating conjuction add a subject and verb about WHEN, WHERE, WHY, or HOW the main verb occurred. If using a relative pronoun add a subject and a verb that gives more details about WHO or WHAT the noun is. Add a period to the end of your dependent clause.

21 CONCLUSION - EXAMPLE As this paper has demonstrated, John Steinbeck uses setting, conflict, and mood to analyze the theme of hopelessness in his short story Flight. However, further research is necessary in order to understand why Steinbeck might have had such a bleak outlook on an individual s prospects in life. Nevertheless, this theme is a timeless one that continues to speak to us today as we face new challenges in a digital age that seems to be pushing us further away from other people and thus disconnecting us from any meaningful purpose in our lives.
