1 Dinosaurs T oday everyone knows what dinosaurs are. But many years ago people didn t know about dinosaurs. Then how do people today know that dinosaurs once lived? Nobody ever saw a dinosaur! But people did see dinosaur bones*. The story began in England in the year One spring morning, Mrs Mantell, a doctor s wife, took a walk in the country. There were many rocks* at the side of the road. Suddenly, Mrs Mantell saw something in one of the rocks. It looked like the tooth of a very big animal. Mrs Mantell picked up the rock and took it home to show her husband. Dr Mantell was very interested in the animal tooth. He wanted to know what kind of animal it came from. One day, Dr Mantell met a man who knew a lot about iguanas lizards* that live in Mexico and Central America. When Dr Mantell showed him the big animal tooth, the man said that it was just like an iguana s tooth but much, much bigger. Dr Mantell was excited. He thought, Maybe very big lizards like iguanas lived in the world a long time ago. Then someone found more bones and teeth from another big animal. Scientists* could tell that the two animals lived at about the same time millions of years ago. From these and more animal bones found in different places, scientists knew that very big animals once lived in the world. But what should they call these animals? The animals were big and scary and they looked a lot like lizards. So the scientists took the Greek words for terrible (deinos) and lizard (sauros). 3 The Diary of Anni X N obody knows her full name; they call her Anni X. But they do know a lot about her: that her father was a doctor; that she had a younger sister, Lucy; that she wrote beautiful poems; that she wanted to be a writer; that more than anything else, she wanted to live in Palestine. Anni lived with her family in Riga, Latvia. From the time she was 11 years old until she was 16, Anni kept a diary. Everything we know about Anni, we know from her diary. During World War II, many German soldiers came to Latvia. One soldier found a girl's diary in a house in Riga. He sent it to a half-jewish friend in Berlin. Many years later, when the friend died, his children found the diary. They thought it was important, so they sent it to Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. They wanted people to remember Anni. Here are some parts from the diary: April 6, 1934 How rough boys can be! Today some Latvians called me a "kosher-body" and threw paper at me. I simply told them: "You're a bunch of stupid boys." Why do they act like that? Didn't the Jews fight together with the Latvians to make the country free? They liked us then, but now that Latvia is free, they don't want us any more. Is that fair? September 23, 1934 death. I want to be somebody. Most of all, I want not to be forgotten after my February 12, 1935 There is so much sunshine inside me, that I would like to share it with others. I can't do it now, but there will come a time when I will be able to. June 21, 1935 I have only one sister, and I would like to live in peace with her. But she keeps on hitting me, and still, I love her. October 26, 1935 When I finish school, I want to go to Palestine. I love the land of my forefathers more than anything. February 14, 1936 I feel so bad today. I think my classmates don't like me anymore. They think I want to be better than everybody else. If they only knew how wrong they are. November 5, 1938 We need a safe place, now more than ever. Just remember how they threw the Polish Jews out of Germany. January 19, 1939 March 21, 1939 possibility of war. I am afraid that I will do nothing with my life. We're sitting on a time bomb. Mama and Papa are talking about the June 24, 1939 I want so much to work and create, to write poetry; and yet I can't. 7 Lori Mark was the best-looking boy in school. All the girls were secretly in love with him. That's why I was so surprised that he even noticed me. I mean, I'm not really pretty or clever or anything. Mark could go out with any girl he wanted. I couldn't understand why he chose me, but he said I made him laugh, and he could tell me things he never told anyone else. I felt very close to Mark, too, but still I couldn't tell him my secret. I was afraid he wouldn't like me any more. I never let Mark pick me up at my home when we went out. I always told him I'd meet him somewhere. He agreed, but he didn't really understand why. One day, I went out with my family to celebrate Lori's 16th birthday at the new Chinese restaurant in town. In the middle of our meal, Mark walked in. Please don't let him see me, I prayed, and turned my face away. Suddenly, I heard a voice say, Hi, Lori! What're you doin' here? I turned around and saw a red-headed boy smiling down at Lori. 11 The Barking Parrot* My friend told me this story and I think it is true. You have to decide for yourself. I lived in South Africa for many years. I had a good job there with the United States Information Service. Then I came to Italy, to Rome. In South Africa I had a parrot. You could say that it was my best friend. I didn't have a family, only my parrot. I talked to it every day and it talked to me. My parrot could say a lot of words and phrases. Very often they really made sense. My parrot waited for me to come home and always said, 'Hello. How are you?' when I came through the door. Then I got the new job in Rome. When I arrived in Rome with the parrot, the customs* officer took it away from me. He said, 'This parrot has to stay here with us for three months'. I was very unhappy, but there was nothing I could do. So I started my new life in a new country without my parrot. At last the three months were over and I went to collect my parrot. The man seemed nervous and I thought, Is something wrong? Is my parrot dead? I got really upset. Then he said, Madam, your parrot is alive; it's not dead! But it doesn't know it is a parrot. It thinks it is a dog! There are no parrot cages here, so we kept it with the dogs for three months. It soon forgot it was a parrot and began to bark like a dog. It thinks it is a dog! I took it home and it barked. It barked in the car and it barked in the new flat. It barked when it heard the telephone and it barked when I came home from work. But it didn't say a word. I was so sad. I even took my parrot to a pet psychiatrist. He talked to the parrot and he talked to me. Then he said, 'I'm sorry. There's nothing I can do. Take your parrot home. Be kind to it. Love it. Speak to it. Maybe then it will forget that it is a dog and start talking again! So I took my parrot home, but one day I was careless.
