1 by Jenny Craiger What Who When Wear (Props) When Becky and Jackson discover a bright light, they illuminate the darkness around them. While Abby dislikes having the light reveal what s around her, Debbie convinces them to keep the light shining to help guide people. Be sure and give yourself plenty of time to rehearse with the lighting and props. Set up a time to work with whomever does the lighting for your service. Have someone watch from the audience to make sure the light works under the trash can and bucket. Typically, it s not a good idea to have low lighting on your stage during a performance, but for the purposes of this script, it works. Time Approximately 5 minutes Skit Guys, Inc. 2 All lights are low. Becky and Jackson come out onto the stage with a bright light attached to an extension cord. Becky: Whoa! That is bright. This is awesome! I m so glad we finally found that power source! Jackson: Yeah! We re going to be able to see for miles. Well, actually, everyone around is going to be able to see for miles. We can all stop tripping in the dark now! Becky: We re like a lighthouse. AWESOME! (Jackson and Becky hi-five each other and admire the light.) Abby: (Abby enters, squinting at the light. She is frustrated.) Hey! Can you tone that down a bit!? You re going to blind me. Becky: Oh! We re sorry (Confused) I guess? Jackson: Don t you want to be able to see? Abby: (snapping). Frankly, no! I like things the way they were before hidden. Your light is seeping into every little dark crevice and I don t appreciate it. There are just some things I don t want people to see! Becky: (fumbling around the light switch) Hold on. Maybe we can find a dimmer switch until your eyes adjust. Abby: (covering her eyes) Well, hurry up. You re offending me. You don t have WERMARK the right to shine that light anywhere you want. It spreads, you know. It s disturbing! Becky finds the switch and turns it off. Becky: Calm down. I turned it off. Look, we re sorry. We thought people would like to be able to see. Jackson: (curiously) Can I ask why you would want to stumble around in the dark? Abby: (rudely) None of your business. Just keep your light to yourself. (She stumbles her way off-stage.) Jackson: Good grief! I didn t expect that. I m almost afraid to turn it back on. Becky: Me, too. I don t want to upset anyone. 2

3 Jackson: I have an idea! Let s turn it on and then cover it real quick with that trash can I saw over there a minute ago. Becky: Good idea. (Jackson stumbles to find the trash can and carry it back to Becky. Becky sets the light on the ground) Okay, on They switch the light on and cover it with the trash can and then stand back to look at the results. Debbie: (Debbie stumbles onto the stage, lost in the dark. Talking to self) Okay, I know I saw the light coming from this way. (Stubs toe) Ouch! Ooooh, that hurt! Becky: (calling out toward Debbie) Hey, is someone out there? Debbie: (Debbie moves across stage toward Jackson and Becky as if following where she heard Becky call out) Yes! Who s there? Where are you? Did you see a light earlier? Jackson: We re over here. Follow my voi ummmph! (Debbie runs into Jackson. He steadies her) Whoa! Are you okay? I m Jackson and I m here with my friend, Becky. Debbie: Hi! Yeah, I m okay, thanks. I m Debbie. What are you guys doing out here? Did you see the light earlier? I m trying to find it, but it seems to have gone out. Becky: Actually, we re trying to figure out what to do with it. WERMARK Debbie: With what? The light? You have the light?! Jackson: Yes. Debbie: Is the switch on? Jackson: Yes. Debbie: Is it plugged in? Becky: Yes. Pause Debbie: Well, where is it? Jackson: Under a trash can. 3

4 Beat. Debbie: Ummm okaaaaay. Why? Becky: (embarrassed) We didn t want other people to see it? Debbie: So, what you re saying is that you have a light, you have it turned on, but you don t want anyone to see it? Jackson: Exactly. Debbie: (stating the obvious carefully as if Jackson and Becky are a bit senseless) But, we re all stumbling around in the dark. Jackson: Yeah, that is a problem. Which way are you going anyway? Debbie: I don t know! It feels like I ve been wandering around in the dark forever. Becky: Well, hold on. (Lifts the edge of the trash can just a tad) Does that help? Debbie: Kind of. But wouldn t it be better just to take the trash can off? Jackson: I guess so. But, we ve heard it s too bright for some people. Debbie: Look, I m not telling you what to do, but if you have something that can save people from the dark, I don t think you should hide it. In fact, I think I m going to follow your cord if you don t mind and look for the power source so I can turn on another light. We can drive away all of this darkness if we keep sharing it! Take care! I hope you figure it out. (Heads WERMARK off stage, following the cord with hands.) Becky and Jackson watch Debbie leave and then drop the trash can back on the light once she exits. They ponder the trash can again. Becky: This is NOT working. Jackson: Maybe we should try a bucket? It would dim it a little, but not snuff it out. Becky: Worth a try. On 3, They take off the trash can and Jackson holds the bucket over the light to dim it. They look at it for a few seconds contemplating. Jackson: My arm is getting tired and why are we doing this again? 4

5 Becky: (a little frustrated) I don t know. It does seem kind of pointless. We have a power supply that spreads a light to drive out the darkness; to help people see what can trip them up. Jackson: And it s what we ve been hoping for, but now we re trying to hide it. Becky: Doesn t make much sense, does it? Jackson: Nope. Becky: You know what? If people want to stay in darkness around us, they may have to wear some shades. Take off the bucket, Jackson. Jackson lifts the bucket to reveal the light. Becky and Jackson observe the light and smile. Jackson: Yeah now that s better! The end. WERMARK 5
