1 Georgia Performance Standards for Second Grade Language Arts Terms for Georgia s (CRCT) Criterion Reference Competency Test Administered in April of Each Year

2 Parents: We are counting on you to help us teach your child these terms/skills. Helping your child learn these terms/skills will greatly accelerate your child s academic achievement.

3 CRCT Terms Learned in First Grade Reading Strategies What do readers do when they don t know a word when they are reading? Look at the pictures and think about the story. Try a word and ask: Does it make sense? Do the letters match? Does it sound right? Readers think about what they read and make mental images.( Make pictures in your head)

4 CRCT Terms Learned in First Grade Comprehension. Distinguishes fact from fiction text. Uses Title, Table of Contents and Chapter Headings. Makes predictions about text (See March PowerPoint)

5 CRCT Terms Learned in First Grade Comprehension Uses dictionary, thesaurus, glossary skills (See March PowerPoint) Distinguishes fact from opinion Identifies main idea, plot, setting, characters and supporting details

6 CRCT Second Grade Terms Stuck on a Word Stuck on a word Chunk it Skip it and go back later Sound it out Look at pictures Think about what makes sense Use information you already know

7 CRCT Second Grade Terms Comprehension Identifies different genresfiction, non-fiction, fables, folktales, and poetry Recognizes the author s purpose for writing Reads and comprehends 90 words per minute

8 Genres or different types of literature Fiction a made up story that uses characters, setting, and plots to convey events not true Non-fiction writings that are not fiction and use real people, settings, plots to convey actual events that are true Fable a story in which animals speak and act like people and which usually teaches a moral lesson Folktale an exaggerated story made up and shared over generations

9 CRCT Second Grade Terms Comprehension Makes predictions from text Interprets information from illustrations, diagrams, charts, graphs, and graphic organizers Makes connections about what is read (e.g. text to text, text to self, (personal experiences) and text to world.)

10 CRCT Second Grade Terms Writing. Uses transition words (finally, in conclusion, next, today, tomorrow etc.) (See March PowerPoint) Develops characters through action and dialogue. Uses descriptive adjectives and verbs. Writes to persuade (supports a position), inform and entertain (Remember P.I.E.)

11 Recognizes Author s Purpose for Writing Remember P.I.E. to persuade, inform, entertain (See March Power Point)

12 CRCT Second Grade Terms Writing Uses appropriate punctuation marks, (e.g. declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences) ( March Power Point) Varies sentence structure by using and understanding the three (3) different kinds of sentences which include: Declarative- a telling sentence Interrogative- a question sentence Exclamatory- a sentence that shows excitement

13 CRCT Second Grade Terms Writing Pre-writes, drafts, edits, revises, rereads, and publishes. Completes all steps of the writing process. Provides a topic sentence and a closing sentence in a piece of writing Begins to use commas, (e.g. in a series, in dates, after a friendly letter closure, after abbreviations, and between cities and states)

14 CRCT Second Grade Terms Vocabulary. Homophone. Homograph. Antonym. Synonym. Idiom

15 homophone homophone- a word with the same pronunciation as another but with a different meaning and spelling. Blue and blew are homophones. The sky is blue. The wind blew the trees over.

16 homograph homograph - a word with the same spelling, but has a different meaning. He has a bow and arrow. He took a bow.

17 antonym antonym- a word that has the opposite meaning (in and out) He is going in the door. He is going out the door.

18 synonym synonym a word with the same or almost the same meaning. The rock is large. The rock is big.

19 idiom idiom - a phrase whose meaning cannot be understood from the ordinary meanings of the separate words in it. I believe you are pulling my leg. The idiom pulling my leg" means to trick or tease. People who do not speak English well have a hard time understanding idioms.

21 CRCT Second Grade Terms Conventions Uses correct mechanics of commas, quotation marks, and apostrophes Quotation Marks- a pair of marks to indicate the beginning and end of a direct quotation. She asked, Why do I have to go? Comma- a mark used to show separation of words or word groups in a sentence I like bikes, boats, cats, and dogs. Marietta, Georgia
