Time allowed 1 hour 30 minutes Instructions Use black ink or black ball-point pen. Write the information required on the front of your answer book. The Examining Body for this paper is AQA. The Paper Reference is 47101H. Answer two questions. Answer one question from Section A and one question from Section B. You must have a copy of the AQA Prose Anthology Sunlight on the Grass and/or the text/s you have been studying in the examination room. The texts must not be annotated, and must not contain additional notes or materials. Write your answers in the answer book provided. Do all rough work in your answer book. Cross through any work you do not want to be marked. You must not use a dictionary. Information The marks for questions are shown in brackets. The maximum mark for this paper is 68. You are reminded of the need for good English and clear presentation in your answers. All questions should be answered in continuous prose. Spelling, punctuation and grammar will be assessed in all questions. The marks available for spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG) are shown for each question. John Steinbeck : Of Mice and Men Question Read the following passage and then answer Part (a) and Part (b). Crooks stood up from his bunk and faced her. "I had enough," he said coldly. "You got no rights comin' in a colored man's room. You got no rights messing around in here at all. Now you jus' get out, an' get out quick. If you don't, I'm gonna ast the boss not to ever let you come in the barn no more." She turned on him in scorn. "Listen, Nigger," she said. "You know what I can do to you if you open your trap?" Crooks stared hopelessly at her, and then he sat down on his bunk and drew into himself. She closed on him. "You know what I could do?" Crooks seemed to grow smaller, and he pressed himself against the wall. "Yes, ma'am." "Well, you keep your place then, Nigger. I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny." Crooks had reduced himself to nothing. There was no personality, no ego - nothing to arouse either like or dislike. He said, "Yes, ma'am," and his voice was toneless. For a moment she stood over him as though waiting for him to move so that she could whip at him again; but Crooks sat perfectly still, his eyes averted, everything that might be hurt drawn in. Part (a) In this passage, how does Steinbeck present the feelings of Crooks and the theme of status?
