Decorating is not just for the Holidays around MBCC! Our very creative Members are always finding new and different ways to decorate the entrances to their apartments --- no matter what time of year it is! I know I find it very uplifting to walk through the halls waiting to make the next discovery Page 1

My photos below do not begin to do justice to her art --- If you haven t already, now is the time to take a look! See if you can guess where these were taken We live in a beautiful part of the world and Jackie has done a great job capturing that for the rest of us. Page 2

3 BE PREPARED FOR FLU SEASON! It is that time of year --- the time when all too many people we know seem to have the flu, flu symptoms or some other kind of respiratory problems. We want you to stay healthy. We don t want you to get sick and if you are sick we don t want you to share your gift with others. 1. If you are sick or think you might be ill stay in your apartment. We can bring food to you and all you have to do is to make a call! 2. Wash your hands regularly. When you are not near a sink disinfect using one of the many pump dispensers that we have throughout the place. 3. When you do cough be sure to cough into your sleeve and not into your hands. 4. Be sure to disinfect your hands before heading into the Dining Room --- I think I overheard Nancy T. say something about Washy Washy once 5. It s not too late for a Flu Shot and if you haven t You should! Not only for your protection but for all of us as well! 6. If you do get the flu call your doctor. Some physicians will prescribe medications to reduce the severity of symptoms. 7. Don t forget to drink plenty of water --- each and every day! Page 3

4 CHRISTMAS TREE FREE TO A LOVING OWNER! This is a live tree (only about two feet high) that can be planted next Spring. For years I have sent similar trees to by brother and my sister as Christmas presents and with a little bit of luck they do get planted and survive and thrive --- and will see another Christmas! Special thanks to our own Marjorie Maher for making this offer ---- you can see the tree as it is now on display at the end of the corridor down by 114! AGING WELL IS ALSO A NEWSPAPER COLUMN Every other Saturday the Laconia Citizen publishes our Newspaper Column that usually has something to do with aging issues --- But you can also find it on our Facebook Page, on our Website or just by asking for copy. I can also add you to an list if you would like a copy sent to you automatically. The most recent column is entitled Celebrating the Moments!. Long ago, when people believed that the earth was made up of four elements earth, air, fire, and water they thought the stars and planets were made up of yet another element. In the Middle Ages, people called this element by its Medieval Latin name, "quinta essentia," literally, "fifth essence." Our forebears believed the quinta essentia was essential to all kinds of matter, and if they could somehow isolate it, it would cure all disease. We have since given up on that idea, but we kept "quintessence," the offspring of "quinta essentia," as a word for the purest essence of a thing. Some modern physicists have given "quintessence" a new twist they use it for a form of so-called "dark energy," which is believed to make up 70 percent of the universe. Page 6

11 CLOSING NOTES.. This and That: Newsletter: Don t forget to me with any notices etc. that you would like to see in next week s and future Newsletters. Movie Review: Les Misérables is wonderful easily the best movie I have ever seen but do know that I see very few movies --- once a year on average. Having read Victor Hugo s novel (1862) and having seen the musical production at least twice -- I did not expect to be dazzled as I was. Do know that it is a musical and It strikes me as being one of those films that is better on the big screen than on television. French classes, Chess Club and trips out to see live theatre are all good for the spirit and I hope you never give up on trying new things. What better time than the start of a new year to find something new to learn or new to do? I haven t heard how last week s Informational Meeting on next September s Cruise from Boston to Canada went but I was certainly impressed with the photos of the Brilliance of Seas that I found --- it looks like a floating palace! With no offense to the good Senior Captain (and MBCC Friend) Paul Smith --- it sure doesn t look like the MS Mt. Washington! Great to see you all keeping it so active!
