4 Grammar in Context: Prepositional Phrases as Adverbs Key Concept: Writers can use prepositional phrases to add detail or give more information about verbs, adjectives, or adverbs. Prepositional Phrases as Adverbs A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition and its object. The phrase may or may not include modifiers. A prepositional phrase may act as an adverb in a sentence. When used as an adverb, the phrase modifies a verb, an adjective, or an adverb and answers the question where, when, how, or to what extent. Note the prepositional phrase in the following sentence. The dinner table was set with fine china. This prepositional phrase modifies the adjective set and answers the question How?
