1 2018 Carson City Frontier Days Queen Contest Carson City Frontier Days, Inc. invites you to participate in the 2018 Queen Contest. Instead of hosting an actual pageant, interested participants will create a portfolio to be considered by a panel of judges. Please review the entry qualifications on the reverse side to see if you are eligible to participate. There is no entry fee for the contest. Portfolio Contents: Completed Application Photograph 1 Letter of Recommendation Designated Questions Essay Your completed application can be handwritten. The submitted photograph should be a headshot of the participant. This can be a school picture or a selfie. Please be sure only the participant is in the photograph. The letter of recommendation can be from any adult. Suggestions include a teacher, coach, or a boss at work. Your answers to the designated questions and the essay must be typed and double-spaced. See the attached for more specific details. Presentation: Due Date: The completed pieces must be turned in on the due date in a folder, presentation sleeve, or binder. The finished product must be turned in to City Hall by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 30, If you decide to mail your portfolio, it must arrive to the address by the same date. Box 340 Carson City, MI Announcement of Queen: The Queen will be announced on Monday, April 9, 2018, via the Carson City Frontier Days Facebook page and on the Carson City Frontier Days website. 2 2018 Carson City Frontier Days Queen Contest Entry Qualifications 1. Contestants must reside in the Carson City-Crystal School District. 2. Contestants must be of or between the ages of years. 3. Contestants must not be married, divorced or co-habitating with a male in lieu of marriage. 4. Contestants must not be pregnant or ever been pregnant. 5. Contestants cannot be suspended or expelled from school at the time of the pageant, nor during her reign. 6. Former Frontier Days Queens will not be eligible to compete in the pageant. 7. The winner will be required to complete 25 hours of community service, including events during the Frontier Days weekend like the Community Picnic, Grand Parade, and Health & Safety Day. Other events will take place throughout the year. Once the winner is chosen, she will meet with the committee to go over these tasks more specifically. 8. Once chosen, the Queen may not hold or run for any other title during her reign (excluding special school functions or events). 9. The Frontier Days Queen must remove all visible body jewelry during her representation of the crown, excluding earrings. All tattoos must be covered. 10. If a contestant has charges brought against her in a court of law while participating in the pageant process, including the reign of the chosen Queen, she will be dismissed from participation. This includes but is not limited to misdemeanors, felonies, truancy and lawsuits. Routine traffic violations do not count. 11. In the event of the Queen not being able to fulfill her duties, all awards and prizes must be relinquished to the next eligible contestant in line. 12. The Queen should always dress attractively when representing her crown. She has the option of wearing a gown or an attractive dress at parades. The Queen should wear her crown and sash for all appearances whenever she is representing Carson City Frontier Days. When not performing an assigned duty during the festival, neat and casual attire is acceptable. (No halter tops, tube tops, short shorts, or mini-skirts, please.) 13. Scholarship money will be awarded to the Queen at the conclusion of her reign if she has participated in all of the required events. All checks will be written to the winner. In the event that the Queen is excused from her title for any reason, the scholarship will be forfeited.

5 Designated Questions Each question below should be submitted on a separate piece of paper. Answers to each question should be at least 100 words but no more than 200 words. The answers should be typed and double-spaced. Be sure your submitted answer has correct grammar and spelling. Use a typed font that is easy to read. 1. What is your favorite thing to do in your hometown? Why? 2. What quality do you most like about yourself? Why? 3. What do you think is the most challenging issue young people face today? Essay Your essay should be submitted on its own piece of paper. Your essay should be a minimum of 500 words. It should be typed and double-spaced. Be sure your submitted essay has correct grammar and spelling. Use a typed font that is easy to read. Essay Topic: You have been gifted a magic wand. You may use it to grant one wish. What would that wish be? Why? After you use it for your wish, the instructions say you are to gift it to another person. Who would that person be? Why? Do not submit this paper in your portfolio. Please use it as a guide to complete it.
