In 1901, Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian scientist, discovered that there are four types of blood. These four blood types were named A, B, AB, and O. All people have one of these four types. Blood type O is the most common around the world. Blood type A is the second most common, and type AB is the least common. If people with type A blood are given type B blood, or people with type B blood are given type A blood, they will probably die. In 1927, a Japanese doctor, Furukawa Takeji, carried out research and came up with the idea that people with different blood types also had different personalities. He said that people with type A blood are usually calm and serious; people with type B blood are curious, cheerful, and outgoing; people with type O blood are generous and honest; and those with type AB blood are often caring, original, and careful. More recently, a doctor in the United States wrote a book that links blood types with what people eat. For example, his book suggests people with type O blood should eat more meat. A diet for people with type A blood includes more vegetables. His book, Eat Right for Your Type, has been a hit with people who want to lose weight. However, Dr. Peter D Adamo believes that eating food that matches a person s blood type can do more than help them lose weight. He thinks it will make the person healthier in other ways, too. Their names were Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. They lived with their mother, Marmee. On Christmas morning, breakfast was ready when Marmee arrived home. She told her daughters that she had visited the Hummel family, which was very poor and had nothing to eat on Christmas day. What can we do for them? they wondered. After a while, Marmee and her daughters decided to give them a special breakfast. They carried what they were about to eat to the Hummels house. On the way back home, the four girls were hungry but felt warm inside. That night, they were surprised to find a lot of food on the table. What s going on? They had no idea where the food had come from until Marmee told them that it was from Mr. Laurence, who was very rich and lived in the house next door. You mean the Laurence boy s grandfather? Jo exclaimed, because she wished that she could get to know the Laurence boy better. Mr. Laurence had heard about the breakfast and decided to reward the children with the food. They were so pleased and enjoyed it very much. A few days later, Jo was reading in her favorite chair near a sunny window. Meg called out to Jo and showed her a letter. It invited them to a dance on New Year s Eve, which was the next day. Meg was so worried about what to wear, but Jo just laughed. What are you worrying about? You know we don t have much to choose from, she sighed. The next day, Jo tried to make Meg s hair prettier, but she did something wrong. Beth and Amy said, Here, let us try. They helped to make it nicer. Marmee made sure they had handkerchiefs. Finally, both girls walked excitedly to the party. Almost as soon as they got there, a boy asked Meg to dance. Jo stood against the wall because she was hiding the burn marks on her dress. She moved along the wall and knocked into the Laurence boy! Both of them were very surprised. Jo asked him, Aren t you dancing? No, I don t know anybody here but you, he said. They started to talk about 11

13 many things, such as the feast that his grandfather had sent to them on Christmas day. It was then that she discovered his name was Theodore, but that he liked it better if people called him Laurie. She also found out that he had been to Paris and Switzerland. He could speak French. He was fifteen years old, the same age as Jo. Finally, Laurie invited Jo to dance. She was pleased with the offer, but she had a reason that she could not dance. It was her dress. He took her out of the room to a hall where they could still hear the music. Now, shall we? They smiled at each other. After a while, Meg came to find Jo because Meg s shoe had broken and she could hardly dance. I can give you a ride home. I ve already had a great time here. Laurie was ready to go home, even though it was early. He took them home in his grandfather s carriage. Meg and Jo told the two younger sisters about the dance. Meg wished that she could always go to dances in fine clothes, but Jo did not care anymore. She thought they were just as happy as rich people anyway. Louisa May Alcott, Little Women, revised 1.
