4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: The or Most/-est Omitted (5-6 minutes) General Description: The superlative form of adjectives is used to show the superiority of one thing against others. It is used only when comparing three or more nouns (ex. most important, tallest). The article the must never be omitted and should always come before the superlative form of the adjective (ex. the kindest client, the most reliable). ( The word most should always be before the adjective or the -est after the adjective in forming the superlative degree (ex. most beautiful, smallest). Remember: Most is normally used for adjectives with two or more syllables (e.g. most intelligent). On the other hand, -est is usually used for one-syllable adjectives. However, -est is also used for twosyllable adjectives that end in -y (change -y to i and add -est). (e.g. tallest, prettiest). Examples: Article Superlative form of the adjective Ms. Kutcher is the most punctual employee of the company. He is the tallest among the male applicants. Mr. Weiss is the most hardworking janitor in this building. She is the nicest secretary our organization can hire. Comprehension Check: Form the the superlative of happy and use it in a sentence.
